Shoot used to do play on words with players, and show them as some sort of hybrid of these.

off the top of my head rovers related:

henning ice-berg (Face on ice, not a lettuce)

paul Ince-stants (face on lottery ticket)

Tim sherwood-forest (Face on a Forest, naturally)

Non-rovers

Lee Sharpe (with knives for hands like Edward Scissorhands)

I was also published in shoot, under the letter title ‘expensive English’. This was to complain at the extortionate price we paid for a one Kevin Davies in 1998!

Ahh yes Roy of the Rovers - loved it! I see they’ve just released compilation books of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s - will order one.

I used to spend hours studying the Match - match stats section, covering all the results over the past week with the player ratings. For some reason I can still picture the Rovers defeat to Notts County in the FA Cup under Dalglish in our promotion year. I think our near fatal slump followed that.

Looks like Fred Else in goal and Mick McGrath. Maybe Mike Harrison in the distance, the photo is a bit blurred. That's the first kit I ever had.

Sorry it’s blurred. It’s March 1965, agree on Fed Else and Mick McGrath. What I couldn’t work out was which ground it is. Facia of stand is either Sunderland, Everton or Spurs. The attacking forward has red socks which would lead me to think Sunderland, but facia is the wrong colour.

I just checked Mike Jackman's book. Mick McGrath's last game in the 64-65 season was against Everton at Home on March the 6th.  Fred Else was missing from after the Home game with Burnley on Feb the 24th until the game with Man Utd on April the 3rd. So logic suggests that the photo was taken before then. Like you I don't recognise the ground. I the photo was clearer I might be able to recognise the opposition forward.

Back in late 1984 aged 13, I was an avid reader of Roy Of The Rovers.

At that time, I did a paper round six mornings a week, getting up at 6.30am  and earning the princely sum of £2.50 per week. Therefore, I was very interested in the below message printed on the letters page.

I thought for a bit about some Rovers trivia which might be sufficiently interesting to get published so I could more than double my meagre weekly wage. I sent a letter off and waited...

Imagine my surprise when my letter was duly published in January 1985.

I hot footed it down to the Post Office and cashed my postal order that very day.

I have a large collection of 90 Mins magazines it was a belter at the time. Fresh interesting and had a bit of vibe and culture about it compared to the other stuff, a bit like most things in the 90's to be fair. Great decade for sport and music.

Great decade to be young, i miss it badly ?

Yes it seemed different , quite wear stuff like that ongoing joke about heimo pfeffenberger/ casino Salzburg

It was difficult to work out which ground that is. It is clearly an Archibald Leitch designed stand, and if we take the clubs that were in the first division then, several of them had a Leitch stand - but I found another photo which confirms that it is in fact Roker Park.

The left back looks like Walter Joyce. Referring to my trusty  " Blackburn Rovers A Complete Record " we played Sunderland away  twice in that mid sixties era -

1964-65 season Sept 19th Lost 1-0 in front of 40,695 fans.

Else

Newton Joyce

Clayton England McGrath

Ferguson McEvoy Byrom Douglas Harrison

1965-66 season Sept 11th Lost 1-0 in front of 35,537 fans

Else

Newton Joyce

Sharples England Clayton

Blore McEvoy Byrom Ferguson Rogers

So if the photos are from the same game and Mick McGrath is in photo 1 it must be the game in 1964. Elementary my dear Watson.

Looking at the boots the Sunderland player is wearing reminded me of the safety boots I wore for work !

I used to play in the same works team as Stan Milburn ( Bobby Charlton's uncle ) who had been a long time pro and an England " B " international. He was in his early 40's by then and he wore boots just like those. The younger players ( like me ) ribbed him mercilessly about his old fashioned boots but he used to say " Laugh all you like lads but I never missed a game with an ankle injury " ! He still had better ball control than any of us.

What a footballing family that was!!! Stan was cousin of 'Wor Jackie' Milburn, a nickname that passed on to Jack Charlton I believe.

You couldn't have met a nicer, more modest,or humble bloke than Stan. He'd been a great servant for Rochdale. I went to his testimonial at Spotland in the May. The usual suspects were playing, Nat Lofthouse, Danny Blanchflower, maybe Tom Finney. No Rovers players for some reason. About two weeks later I was cutting through the works warehouse and who should be coming the other way pushing a sack truck but Stan Milburn ! How times have changed. He was the regular right back for Leicester City in the old First Division for about 6 seasons  back in the day. He'd be loaded if he was playing for them today. Their players will earn more in a couple of months than he earned in a lifetime.

He was still playing local amateur football into his 50's. I remember meeting up with him in M&S one day just before he died and he only just about remembered me. Another football victim of Altzheimers  unfortunately.
