  1. Long time reader, first time poster. I'm not sure that's the case bluefred, provided last season's loanees are loaned back or replaced with someone of equivalent standard. This squad should at least hold it's own, as IMO it's stronger (ability & confidence wise) than the one that went down so narrowly & for fear of stating the obvious, TM is a far better manager than his not-to-be-named predecessor. Yes strengthening is required to compete towards the upper echelons next season (which should be our maximum realistic expectations; anything else is a bonus) & it sounds like TM is confident he has the budget to do that. The future seems a little bit brighter; not many of us would've said that 12 months ago. In terms of signings, I think as priorities (perms or loans) we need an experienced Champ quality CB & promising box-to-box CM (as we have injury frailties in both those positions), and a strong up'n'coming CF and pacy winger (Chapman would be a risk worth taking) where we're weak full stop at this level. I'd also def have Armstrong back. I'd keep Graham & Conway for their experience & seniority (IF the deal is right for Conway in particular i.e. not sentimental), Evans (he's got something, I'm sure!) & Samuel (ditto). I'd be happy to see Whittingham & Gladwin shipped out, and Payne not to be re-signed. Youth wise, Travis & Tomlinson might be the answer in CM, Wharton n Nuttall loaned out to League 1, with 2 or 3 others from the U23s loaned out to League 2. That should be enough to see us finishing mid-table or top half, potentially with a playoff tilt. I'd like to see us challenge higher, but Ewood can't be rebuilt in a season. Those in the playoffs were, by definition, amongst the best of last season. We ought to be stronger than the majority of the also-rans and I'd be happy with stability in that respect.

  2. That Jones guy we had on loan. We've had a few pretenders for the role since then though.

  3. Your moniker is confusing me! My eyes aren't great these days and it always looks like Pornster to me! Sorry!

  4. Do you seriously think we've got that sort of money to spend ?

  5. When David Jones first came in after having Danny Murphy in the middle all season he was a breath of fresh air. That famously bad game when we were 3-0 down at half time to Peterborough and Murphy got booed and subbed off at half time and played his last game for the club after an awful first half. Jones came on and scored and got man of the match . Gutted we didn't keep him at the time as much as he was extremely one footed.

  6. Evans is a holding midfielder so was Lowe and Williamson and so is Smallwood. All this starting with two holding midfielders going back to Bowyers days is done to death for me we finally need something g a bit different in there if it can be found.

  7. Getting Lenihan a new contract has to be a huge priority this summer. He has potential as a future captain (behind Mulgrew and Bennettl) and needs a 4year deal signed asap with only 12 months to go. Mulgrew (I think) only has 1 year left now and really needs that extended to 2 or 3. Whilst I agree that Dack and Smallwood deserve improved terms to match Championship wages, to lose one or both of Mulgrew and Lenihan on free transfers next summer would be catastrophic. We need to get as many of our squad under 30 on 3+ year contracts as possible as we cant be losing players again like Hoilett, Duffy, Marshall, King, Lowe (lol) and Mahoney on % of value.

  9. Can't believe anyone can have a go at Sterling. Him, Kane and maybe Walker are the only players any other top international team would be envious of. He's quick, creative, scores goals, can beat players inside and outside. It's no accident he's kept his place in a City side full of outstanding attacking players. If we're going to get anywhere it will really come down to Kane and Sterling having excellent tournaments.

  10. Is that not an example of the infamous agent planted story - the ‘rule of 3’ ?

  11. I would agree with Nsaia but not Nolan ,,,,

  12. I would definitely take Nsiala as a 3rd choice CB 2nd choice RB. Sadler and Beckles look dodgy as, yet he was rock solid anyway. Plus he is 6ft 3" and 26 years old with 1 year to go on his contract, perhaps a bid in the £400-800k range would get him??? Is he younger and better than Ward? Yes. Is he younger and better than Caddis? Yes. Is he younger and better than Downing? Yes. (IMO) Does he have a cool sounding name? Yes.

  13. Good call i'd forgotten about him, not a powerhouse but a combatative midfielder for sure. There was some right balls dropped when they were insistent on building a team around Lowe etc. Bad judgement .

  14. Shame on shrews here but Jon Nolan and Toto Nsiala here thanks

  15. Towell at Rotherham would be a good signing, central midfield is a key area for us to strengthen & I doubt Brighton would want much for him.

  16. I was told last year Frank (well his Mrs really) wanted to move back up here for family reasons , I was convinced he would end up here , then we signed the Canadian I have no doubt he will be at a north west club though soon

  17. I'd say the current squad would spend the season in the bottom third of the league. That's not exactly where we want to be. Two key players in Graham and Mulgrew will be a year older at an age were you don't want to get any older. We need to reinforce the team significantly.

  18. Who's opinion are you spouting here exactly? Whilst it's far from certain the squad is good enough to hold its own it's also far from certain to say it's not. for what it's worth I'd say it's a better squad than the one that went down 2 years ago. Also you say you are basing it on the play offs which is like judging the premier league on Liverpool v Tottenham

  19. Your all more than welcome to join us in the JW, its just personal preference. The club like the idea

  20. A centre back is the least of our worries, in my eyes. A striker and some wingers are the bigger priority in my eyes!

  21. Steve was very positive and likes the idea, the club are going to promote this idea. He is aware of the need to find a solution that works for us all, fans from DE, those wishing to move into the JW lower and importantly those already in the JW lower. I think it could work out well for all concerned. Anything that improves the atmosphere and match day experience as got to be good for all Rovers fans.

  22. Yes I was pleasantly surprised at how positive he and the club are about it. I look forward to working with the club on this.

  23. Let me save you the heartache: they do. They just express it differently than you. Stick around and soak it up - eventually you’ll learn to enjoy the differences. For instance, a lot of people get mad at JAL. Personally I dig that he has these opinions. It’s also notable that he always stays classy with replies.

  24. What's negative about an opinion that a player simply isn't up to it any more and shouldn't get a new deal?
    1 point
  25. Ah the old negativity argument. As for not having the club at heart I know for certain that some of the posters who don't see any value in giving him a deal never miss a game, spending a perhaps a couple of thousand pounds in doing so.

  26. I trust Mowbray to behave in an ethical and honest fashion. I think he's proven that in the short time he's been at the club. Having said that he's just like the rest of us, he's not infallible. He'll make mistakes, every manager makes mistakes. I reserve the right to criticise Mowbray when he does.

  27. Cant take that away from em! Question now is, is have they learned there lesson? I think they have and it's cost em a few bob in doing so. On the TM front i've read on many occasions about ... In Tm we trust and we have faith in him etc etc. Knowing how fickle most of the fans are it makes me think how "Short a time" before they turn on him if it starts going wrong? I hope for ours and everybody else it does'nt

  28. I don't know where to start with this but if you buy a Premier League club and turn it into a Div 1 club you can expect to run up big debts. Not as much as the Raos have but, then again, they are in a class of their own in that regard. I don't know the exact size of the debt but I do know it hasn't been spent making us better. Fact And while I haven't done the sums, I suggest sales exceeded expenditure after Kean (or Voldemort as i prefer) so they actually haven't spent money at all in the sense that you imply.

  29. Utterly ridiculous.. Its our team and I want to see the best players possible in each position. And Conway's run with us imo has come to an end. If he plays and stays I know he'll do his best but on the basis of last season, he won't be good enough. Whether I know the terms offered or not (and I certainly don't expect to) is irrelevant, I would prefer to use his wage on someone else. I'm left wondering how supporters are supposed to react to things about the club they don't like. Are they supposed to just turn up and cheer anyway without passing comment? And what's the point of a Message Board if you can't speak your mind about anything Rovers? Why are you on here if you are not interested in what fans think? You seem to want a sanitised world that I don't recognise.
    1 point
  30. As supporters we see the games and make judgements about players from them. A player can look good in training but flops on the bigger stage (Gladwin for example). Conway hasn't just been mediocre last season, he has been that way for some time. I just don't see what he will bring to a squad which needs improving radically if we are to even reach mid table. I just don't get the coming off the bench argument neither. Any squad player for us should be good enough to start and their presence in the squad alone be enough to keep the other players on their toes.
