  1. Sometimes I forget whether this message-board is for discussion of Rovers or middle aged men role playing as teenagers girls

  3. I'm sure this lad might turn out to be decent but christ... We need an out and out centre forward! We're going into a season with our only capable centre forward being Graham who's 33 and can't do 90 mins.

  4. It’s a message board, folk can be as positive or negative as they want and it makes no difference to the players, the manager or the signings we will/won’t make. So why the constant waste of time and energy going on about the mindset of anonymous people on the internet?
    10 points
  5. Often the negative vibe is peoples points being misconstrued and taken out of context, perceived to be negative. No one has said the manager isnt a great fit for the club, or that they dont trust him, for example, yet thats one myth peddled down peoples throata a lot. No one has said that they wont judge after the deadline either, people have often hypothetical conversations, again about things theyd like and expect, and are told not to judge yet. The fact that we havent signed our targets yet could be for a multitude of reasons, I doubt Mowbray sees it as ideal, he said he wanted his business done early and obviously weve had slow starts in our last two seasons so its a valid point yet its misconstrued as blind panic.

  7. To demonstrate that they are better, more loyal, fans because they support the manager, the club, the players, without question. Those who do question, who demand better, are seen as pessimistic or negative, and usually made fun of. It’s been like this for a long time. Although it has got much worse since Venkys and Kean rocked up and challenged that blind loyalty to its limits. Chaddy made quite a statement earlier. A very bold prediction for this week’s business. If we don’t make those signings I’d expect him to be disappointed. He won’t be though. Or at least he won’t admit it.

  8. So a player that we know all about, with definite ability, and who fits in with the squad, is available “cheap” - which by our standards is 50p-and-a-curly-wurly territory - and we didn’t jump at it? He’d better have someone bloody good lined up, cos a 5 month loan of a PL youngster doesn’t really stand up.

  9. He never used to. The Chaddy of old was pretty friendly, his optimistic outlook on all things Rovers almost matched by his optimistic outlook towards other fans. In fairness, I think he was twisted and embittered by the perpetual abuse he seemed to attract for being the epitome of the positivity spectrum. Being constantly under attack seems to have developed defence mechanisms in him, and to survive psychologically he has subsequently adopted the default attitude of a brfcs poster - condescension, unwarranted sarcasm, hubris, and a propensity for indulging in catfights. To be fair, some of the stuff people used to hurl at him, I'd have been snapping at them a lot sooner and a lot harder. A lot of people used to genuinely feel sorry for him and asked others to lay off him. So, it is understandable to an extent. Sadly, this survivalist adaptation period has cultivated a persistent paranoia that everything of an opposing view may be a personal slight. I miss the old Chaddy. The biography - The Evolution Of Chaddy, penned by myself - is available in all substandard bookstores now.

  10. Everton game shows our starting lineup is good enough for the championship. Stanley game shows our strength in depth isn’t up to the standard. If no one comes in that is at least bench standard, then we will struggle if we get injuries.

  12. Armstrong is a poor mans Michael Owen. Would anyone recommend playing Owen on the wing because he has pace. Armstrong is not a winger. Unless your signing him to play upfront where imo he would score us the goals we need then don't sign him and sign a winger. It's as clear as day that Armstrong is a striker

  13. The problem is to date we have brought in 2 perm signings, Davenport and Rothwell for a combined 750-800k factoring in we recieved 425k from the Mahoney tribunal thus far we have spent a paltry 325-375k. I want to see a little ambition, happy with the Palmer signing and would be ok with the Nmencha signing but only if the two perms brought in(if they happen)are good enough to improve our first 11. Rich Sharpe has been tweeting tonight that one of the perm signings will be a centre half, whoever comes in in that position will be a back up player. I will be dissapointed if we only bring 1 attacking player in on a permanent deal.Would you not be dissapointed with that?

  14. Chaddy, nobody is saying they don't trust Mowbray. The market is what it is,the price of players has gone up we can complain about it all we want and to an extent I agree we shouldn't be going crazy but after the good season we had last year and a bit of a feel good factor returning to Ewood and the rise in season ticket prices then I expected the owners to back Mowbray a little better. To date we have spent about 800k on 2 young players which is nothing really.Like I said I wasn't expecting millions to be spent but I thought he might have been given the funds and the go ahead to bring in 3 or 4 around the 2 or 2.5 million mark. The owners always release statements telling us they are committed to getting the club back to the premier league if that's true then they need to be loosening the purse strings

  15. That's just stupid, just going by the stats, Bamford scored 14 in 23 in L1 with MK Dons and followed by another 8 in 21 in the Championship for Derby = 22 league goals that season. He followed that with 18 in 38 in the Championship for Boro. If Dack can do that this season (difficult but not impossible) that'd be amazing, no? Not sure how you can say doing anything at a lower level is better. 7m is a lot of money, especially as he hasn't been amazing since then but if you've seen him play he's got real talent, someone I have enjoyed watching in the past as I like skillful players, a journeyman he most certainly is not.

  17. My two pennies worth... If we don't get a pacy winger and striker in then this will be a poor transfer window. Ideally permanent but at this stage a loan would do. This is a rebuild job, but as the season progresses we need players who can stretch other teams...we have no one in the squad who has that pace.

  18. My prediction is we'll get one loan, probably Palmer, announced before Ipswich and after that we'll at best get one permanent done before the deadline and another loan, two at the most, before the end of August. Anyone setting themselves up for a busy exciting week of several quality new signings I think will be disappointed.

  20. You are refusing to accept what most people are saying! I have said numerous times as have others, that signing loans of quality of supplement the squad is very good and a wise way of adding to the squad. Even looking at the 2 loans, Palmer has played at this level and been a big success. No one has doubted him quality wise. Nmecha hasnt played senior football, only youth football. All transfers are gambles. A player with only youth team experience is a big one as weve no idea how he will fare. The main point which I will repeat, is not that we shouldnt sell loans, its that we shouldnt ONLY sign loans and become overly reliant on them. Even Mowbray has said that before. You (not only you, apologies for picking you out) seem to be desperate to peddle this myth that those who are making any sort of constructive point or in any way questioning potential transfer structures are just lying in a pit of their own misery. I am looking forward to seeing Palmer sign on loan as hes an exciting player, just as I enjoyed watching Armstrong and Chapman last season. But no, I cant "even acknowledge we are signing quality on loan or enjoy that fact"...

  21. Championship journeyman is a bit disngenous. With an average of 1 in 3 for teams at the top end of the table and also having had PL loans, says he’s a better player. Dack hasn’t even played in the Championship yet...(admittedly that will change in a week’s time). I love Bradley Dack as much as anyone, but Christ, I’m also a realist and not that biased!

  22. I think everyone understands that loans are crucial in terms of supplementing the squad, as long as its aswell as permanent signings. The only reason that people would be annoyed is if we only signed loans which is perfectly fair. The 2 players in question have different question marks around them. Kasey Palmer, there has been unanimous agreement that he has the ability, proven in particular in playing a key part in getting Huddersfield promoted. in making a big impact. The only real debate has been how hes going to fit into our team, baring in mind his natural position is where our best player currently plays. Also seen a few people including myself a bit disappointed with the length of the loan suggested but hopefully he will be here for the season, one way or another. Lukas Nmecha, im unsure how he also fits under the phrase "far better than what we could afford to buy." Hes barely kicked a ball competitively, hes obviously a talent but he must be very raw and theres very little evidence, unlike with Palmer, to suggest that within the next year he would be better than what we could get permanently. Bauer for me is one where he obviously is more than good enough to be our 3rd centre back, just seems a waste to spend a decent fee on an player who would only play if we had an injury, as much as I appreciate the need for a good squad. Arsmtrong is in my eyes a winger, he was so effective there and provided far more width than I expected him too, when Samuel and Gallagher have played there for us under Mowbray they looked like strikers playing wide, a bit awkward, whereas Armstrong looked like the position suited him to the ground. If Mowbray is unconvinced after last season then hes a tough one to please, he was excellent.

  23. I'm not so sure mate... Only 3 seasons ago we had serious interest in Sandro Wagner who couldn't get into Hertha Berlin side... He's now banging em in at Bayern when he starts. I've always maintained the German market is massively overlooked for value. The style of play is similar and the players (especially in Bundesliga 2) don't earn massive wages.

  24. I remember it very well. I won a competition to represent Rovers at half time against a Spurs guy who won the same competition. The idea was that you had to dribble from the half way line past 3 deckchairs and shoot past their mascot in goal in the fastest time ? I beat him and won £1500 in holiday vouchers because Thomson were their sponsors at the time. We played really well that day and if I remember their winner was scored by Mido, an Egyptian striker who had been receiving abuse from the Spurs supporters all game. My highlight (apart from winning the holiday vouchers) was Jermaine Defoe, congratulating me and shaking my hand after I tucked my effort away. He was a sub that day and warming up during half time.

  25. The mail are reporting that McKay from Forest is close to joining Swansea for 500 grand,he would have been a decent signing. Il be honest I bought into what Mowbray said about having a competitive budget now I'm thinking iv been a fool. The thing that annoys me most is we actually have a decent set of fixtures to start the season off but we are not giving any of the potential incomings a chance to bed in. I'm not buying when people bring up the crazy market as an excuse,Mowbray has been in the game a long time , enquiries would have been out before the trip to India we would have known the prices.

  26. Like last year it seems the money, whatever there is of it, is going to be invested into midfield/defence rather than attack. I suspect that's because we're unwilling/unable to pay the going rate for permanent signings up front and so the alternative is to rely on the loan market to try and fill the gaps (like we did last year with Antonsson and Armstrong). It might just be my odd way of looking at things but if we've money to spend on a back up CB to sit behind Mulgrew, Lenihan, possibly Williams and Downing, then that money should be diverted elsewhere. Clearly it isn't my job to tell Mowbray what to do but I would be perplexed if we spend what money we have on a CB and 2 midfielders when the gaping hole in the squad is and has been all summer up front and out wide. We've known since January, or even before, that these positions needed addressing as our loans of Armstrong, Chapman and Payne were themselves only short term stopgaps. So to be going into our first league game at Ipswich with Bennett and Conway as our only two wide men and Graham as our only proven forward is awful.

  27. Trust Mowbray? I keep seeing this but what does it mean? I trust TM to be as honest as he can, to do his best, I trust that he is a good bloke and I expect he's great to have a chat with if you can get a word in. Does that mean he won't make mistakes? No. I know for a fact his judgment isn't perfect. Trusting him doesn't mean we won't get shafted by the selling club, it doesn't mean we won't get gazumped by another bidder or that any number of other things that could mean we miss out on who we want. To keep saying trust Mowbray is a bit daft. I believe there is money to spend and TM and Waggott want to spend it but it doesn't mean they are or aren't going to get the right players.

  30. Yeah, it’s been hell. What with the Full Members Cup win, the eventual promotion at Wembley, winning the league, the league cup win, those European trips, fa cup semi finals. It’s been bloody awful. Interspersed with a few relegations, these crappy owners, admittedly. But come on... in the scheme of things I reckon 80% or clubs would have swapped places with us. Sad ain’t it. If only there was an ignore function.

  37. I disagree.I thought Armstrong played well as part of a three behind a lone front man and if I was him I'd be working hard to make that a permanent position. I don't think he has the height or strength to play up front on his own and it's rare you see teams playing with two strikers these days. I agree he isn't an out and out winger but either side in a three I could see him developing into a very good player
    2 points
  38. Is that response really needed? Trying to twist his argument to make him seem unrealistic and unreasonable. There are plenty of examples of wingers at this level that are either available (Maddison an example) or have been signed elsewhere (Adelakun, Edwards etc) that cost nowhere near that amount. @JHRover @RevidgeBlue would you both be happy with a couple of loans if they were to supplement a couple of permanent signings? If we only signed loans, I also would be disappointed. But its not a zero tolerance on loans, there have been some very good loan signings, Tammy Abraham and Mitrovic 2 of the best examples. But its all about not being over reliant on them. Last time we were at this level, we had Gallagher, Emnes, Joao, Hendrie, Byrne and Hoban, and were over reliant on them. Sign a couple, players like Palmer who we couldnt afford to buy, a long with an Armstrong or similar permanently, and youve got a balance.

  39. Read an article about Nmecha - him talking about moving up to the 1st team squad last season. Learnt alot coming up against Vincent Company in training. He could get an extra touch at youth level as the centrebacks were not so physically imposing. Came off a bit battered and bruised against Company! I like the sound of the lad but loan is no good long term as I assume he would be well out of our price bracket. We need a striker in that is good enough to replace Graham at the end of the season. Whether that's good enough immediately or one to develop over the season - and it must be a permanent deal. I am assuming the CB is with a view to replacing Mulgrew next season.

  40. I disagree completely about Wharton. How many games will Mulgrew and Lenihan miss between them? I wouldn't be surprised if It's in the order of 25. plus substitute appearances. Wharton should have been promoted ahead of Downing in the pecking order for me and retained. Is anyone actually happy with the prospect of Downing and Greer as back up?
    2 points
  41. Loan signings are a good way of getting better players than you have currently, and in previous years where we have had a very unstable team in terms of having to replace most of the players from the previous years it can be destabilising to rely upon loans. Loan signings mixed in with a strong core of players and some encouraging, cheaper buys are perfect for trying to establish back in the championship. As for signing Bauer if the funds are available and it doesn’t compromise signing a striker then go for it I would say.

  43. Didnt know much about him either to be honest. 100 goals in 300 games across two spells for Bournemouth. 24 in 38 games last season is pretty impressive in League One too. Decent shout actually.

  44. He won the Championship with Bournemouth. The guy is 30 and has tons of experience if you check his wiki - not a bad goal rate either.

  46. It's not my money being spent so It's easy for me to say but as a fan my only concern is that we get the best quality players we can in in the positions in which we need them. I couldn't really care less if we have to pay a slight premium for the privilege, if We're bringing in the right sort of player to begin with they should appreciate in value anyway.
