  1. We signed 7 players last summer and spent a sizeable sum in the process. Yet it hasn't really improved competition as the team is still very heavily reliant on the players that were here last season. We need players who are going to improve the first team and going to be played in their best positions. Of our summer signings Rodwell, Armstrong, Brereton, Reed and Palmer have all in the main been played in a position that isn't their best one. 4 full seasons at Stoke he finished 9th, 9th, 9th and 13th. Stoke were a lot better of with him than they have been since he left. Also you say he spent millions but you negate to say that in his last window there Stoke made a net profit. He kept Southampton up last season against the odds and was harshly sacked in my opinion. Also you obviously forget how well organised we were defensively when Hughes was here, a far cry from how we are set up now. I hope that you are not trying to compare Mowbray with Hughes as the two aren't even in the same league. More contradictions from you though Chaddy as a few months ago you were saying the following about Hughes.

  2. Only on this forum, with this fanbase, could 96.24% of fans backing the manager as of right now, be misconstrued into some sort of negative. Theres a few posters who have appeared from nowhere questioning why this thread is even here who clearly haven't thoroughly read the title, question and answers. This is potentially the single biggest show of support ANY manager has ever had from this forum. Thankfully journalism is a dead industry, because some of the shite I've seen on Twitter with regards to what this poll shows is incredible. For what it's worth, as far as I'm concerned any managers job is always under review. Let's see what Mowbray does over summer. So far he's done exactly what he told us he would do, solidify and give the trusted players the opportunity to keep their places. Weakness have been exposed, it's now a case of strengthing over summer to improve the first team. If he doesn't do that and we go backwards...

  3. I rarely visit the Message Boards for which I signed up in my early years on t'Interweb because, while I respect other people's views, I don't like the way that many of them - including dome of the ones I agree with - are expressed. I haven't voted in this poll because none of the options represent my precise views on here. Those fans I know personally are probably fed up of me pointing out that when I watched the first match I remember my Dad bringing me to - 65 years ago - we were in mid-table in Division Two. And where are we now? Mid-table in the Championship. While it would be WONDERFUL to be back in the Premier League, I would rather see it happen slowly and steadily, and wouldn't worry too much if it didn't happen next season or even the season after that. We've had a real rollercoaster ride over those 65 years and after the misjudgement, imo, of our owners replacing Allardyce, with first Kean, then Bowyer, I welcomed the arrival of Tony Mowbray as our first "proper" football manager since BFS was sacked. I'm becoming less enamoured of TM because of some of the points that others have made; it's felt like we've signed players whom he knew when they were in their early years and who are -probably - just about capable of functioning at our present level. To me, we feel over-provided for in midfield - that group of the squad has almost got a 'Never mind the quality, feel the width' - with the defence and attack under-populated by comparison. I worry who the owners would choose to replace Mowbray if they decided to sack him; but, for the time being, I guess it's better the devil we know for the time being. But the summer window will be crucial; he has to show a ruthless streak towards lads who may have reached their peak professionally and cannot push us further up the table.

  4. @chaddyrovers @Paul Mellelieu @Lie_still_Rover you all seem to have totally missed the result of the poll, presumably as it doesnt fit your agenda of wanting to believe that everyone is baying for the managers blood. Less than 4% have already decided that Mowbray is not the man to take us forward. Many like yourself are unreservedly behind the manager long term, many like myself are more than happy to give him more time to see if he is indeed the man to take us into a promotion push going forward, of course throwing away leads, having one of the worst defensive records in the league without an attitude of desperation to change that, and a very underwhelming transfer record will all have to change if that is to happen. Whether he is or isnt the man to change these things, one thing is for sure, I appreciative the work he has done so far, especially the promotion. Im sure even the 5 who want a change feel the same. And chaddy, going over the major issues and faults of the team at the moment that are affecting it progressing at the moment is not "clogging up the messageboard." Nor do I believe you have acknowledged it, indeed you are very defensive whenever anyone questions why we spend so much on sub attackers yet make do with midfielders "doing a (poor) job" failing to stem the tide in defence. Ive seen lots of criticism about this poll even on social media. All its proved is that the vast majority are patient and dont want the manager to go just yet, and that unlike some of those in defence of Mowbray, they are able to distinguish between deserved, constructive criticism and radical moves to change that. Mowbray deserves criticising recently, he has been criticised but the vast majority want him to stay.

  5. What I find most interesting about this poll is that to me it highlights how people are still terrified of the owners and that Mowbray get's cut a lot of flack because he is not Kean or Coyle. If you'd have had this poll when we were mid table in the Premiership under Allardyce, I think more than 5 people would have said sack him. Even though we were a solid mid table team in the top flight, with an excellent manager, ok some didn't like the football but let's be honest the football we play now isn't any better (Infact I would say its worse). I've seen a lot of people say that we need to be careful that we could get worse than Mowbray to me that doesn't come across as a big vote confidence in the manager but more a vote of no confidence in the Owners. I've voted Mowbray out but if he is here next season (and I fear he will be) then he needs to do 3 very important things to make sure that we are more Sheffield United than Millwall next season. The first is bring in a head of recruitment who has knowledge of not only British Leagues but also of European ones, Mowbray signings all seem to come from a very limited field, he's admitted that we have no knowledge of European Markets and the money he has spent has on the whole not been spent very well. Also we need to bring in a fitness coach to get this team fit for 90 minutes a game and for a 46 games season, we are so far behind a lot of other teams in terms of fitness that it is embarrassing. The final thing that is needed is a coach to come in to work with the defence and get it organised, as the manager has shown that he is unable to do this.

  6. FYI- someone asked for a poll, so we made one. We try to look after our members on here where we can! My favourite thing about this message board at the moment is the people that complain posters are over reacting while actually over reacting themselves. Peopke rightly have legitimate concerns about certain things as do I- Conceding late goals. Falling to pieces and conceding loads of goals having done so. The standard of our defending. Not playing our best right back then playing someone who isn’t a right back in his place./Playing players out of position. A very small percentage of people on here wanted the manager sacked. Does it really matter if people have a different opinion? You’ll have a tough time in life if you can’t handle different points of view! I’ve got concerns about Mowbray saying we don’t have a problem defensively and his use of some players. I don’t want him sacked though and I didn’t vote for that to happen. I just think there are areas in which he could improve...

  7. Recruitment is a problem and there are suggestions we appoint a Director of Recruitment. I think it's clear Mowbray doesn't have enough contacts and after the ludicrously expensive Brereton debacle why on earth should we trust his judgement. Overall, I think his player trading is poor with too many Harts, Gladwins and Joe Averages. Some suggestions in this thread Venus and Lowe should be replaced. It was Mowbray who appointed them in their roles, and sees their day to day work, so yet again I would question his judgement. Defensively, we had problems when Big Sam joined. Seem to recall Sam being asked about a defensive coach and he replied something along the lines 'that's my job, I'll sort it'. For crying out loud, Mowbray was a decent central defender yet he seems hopeless about organising our back four which I think I am correct in saying has conceded more away goals than any other team (other than Ipswich) in the Championship with only three other teams have conceded more goals overall. I look at our team and think: Are we physically and mentally fit. IMO, nearly every team we meet seem better. Look at how many late goals we concede. Is there an identity / structure / style to our play. I think in the main, our football has been dire over the last two years - hoof, hoof and more hoof Are we getting the most out of our available players. I think we see too many square pegs in round holes and Mowbray's favourites also being 'squeezed in'. I can't see any consistency in selection. Are we progressing as a team. I don't think we are. There have been some shocking performances (M'boro, Preston and Wigan come readily to mind). All teams get beat but it is the manner of defeat that matters and, worryingly, I think we have been abysmal too many times - IMO, that first half against M'boro was as bad as the Kean / C o y l e days Mowbray inherited a tough situation from C o y l e and to get relegated on goal difference was galling after the points we lost from winning and drawing positions due to, IMO, Mowbray's game management. Okay, Mowbray got us back but I think it was despite him and not because of him. We were the best resourced club in a pi$$ poor League One and at times, I think we got out of jail given the very poor quality of the opposition. IMO, there's no mileage in giving Mowbray another window or seeing where we are come October / November next season. IMO, there is little evidence to suggest Mowbray can take us any further and he should be replaced.

  8. That's what he has said alright, but should he have known who would be good enough without trying them out? He has a lot of work to do now in the summer due to lack of addressing concern issues in summer and in January. I am all for giving him time, but I am concerned that a lack of pro-activity with regards who is good enough or not leaving too much to do this summer to put us in a position to compete for promotion next season. We need 1-2 center halves, 1 right back,1 left back, 1 winger and at least 1 striker. Of those players we need at least 3 of them to be good enough to come straight into the starting 11. Definitely 1 center half, 1 striker and 1 winger (to replace Reed) need to all be top players. If we had have signed even a good center half and striker last summer or in January, that would mean less to do next summer. If last summer was 3/10 with regards recruitment, then next summer needs to be 8 or even 9 out of 10. He has it all to do

  9. I'm glad the people who really really don't want him sacked are happy with the outcome of the poll that confirms hardly anyone else wants him sacked either. We wouldn't want you getting upset over nothing.
    5 points
  10. Correct me if I'm wrong but the point of a poll is to gauge opinion. Now we know that less than 4% want him sacking and the majority want to review his position in the summer and 40% are happy with him. Job done apart from a small minority who want to take some kind of moral high ground and not accept other people's opinions.

  11. The owners stumbled upon TM, as they did with Bowyer. It wasn't some intricate plan that has come together, he was free, cheap and whoever represents him obviously managed to impress Suhail or Senior. Bowyer and Mowbray have been our only managers since they appeared who can be classed as "successful" - and both were cheap, quite obscure options. Bowyer got the gig because he was already here, Mowbray was on the managerial scrapheap after Coventry and we were likely his last shot at revitalising his career. There's no doubt that both Bowyer and Mowbray have overperformed relative to their achievements and standing in the game prior to joining us, but this was pure luck. So, yes, if Mowbray does leave we should be very fearful of what comes next. These owners have never taken the managerial position seriously enough and that has been a core component of our gradual demise.

  12. Our next step up is a return to the top flight, that must be our aim...we cannot rest on our Laurels. Is TM the man to take us there, does Tony himself believe he can do it?.If he has any doubts whatsoever he must step aside.....PROGRESS NOT STAGNATION.

  13. Sorry Merce ..cant agree with this bit of your post. If Mowbray was at fault for taking us down by one goal then he must get credit for getting us promotion. You don't just get lucky and amass 96 points with only 6 losses all season regardless of which league you are in with a manager who has no influence. It simply doesn't happen. If history says in your eyes Mowbray took us down then history also says Mowbray took us up. Sunderland will be romping it then this season …?

  14. Nyambe taken out of the firing line for two bad games yet Bennett keeps constantly getting picked, how many bad games does he need before he's dropped. Seems to me like one rule for one and one rule for another, more poor handling of a young player by Mowbray. Every time Mowbray speaks these days I despair at his comments, also he sounds more and more like a manager under increasing pressure.
    3 points
  15. Yep, agreed. Time for the Bennett love in at RB to end and Nyambe to come back in - square pegs square holes and all that.
    3 points
  16. Happy for him to stay, but the sheer volume of players out of position is reaching farcical levels for me. Bennett not a right back. Mulgrew and Rodwell together doesn’t work as both of them are converted. Reed rarely plays centrally, Brereton, well! Armstrong not a winger, though his pace can make him effective in certain games. He’s had Dack playing as a ‘false 9’. Far too clever for his (and the team’s) own good. Let’s just get back to basics for Christ sake.

  18. Disappointing night for the Under-23's. Everton looked like a top of the table side tonight although, in fairness, their goalkeeper was outstanding with a number of brilliant saves. We conceded two goals from mistakes by our players. Tyler was responsible for the first by trying to play his way out of defence and then losing the ball. Albinson should have done better with the second. Chapman had 60 minutes and was fairly anonymous - certainly looks a long way off being ready for the first team - and Davenport didn't really do much to impress. With ten players out on loan and Travis promoted to the seniors, the Under-23's haven't really many options at this point. Damien Johnson looked very frustrated on the touchline, rather like Mowbray yesterday.

  22. My point was to show how ludicrous it was to drop Nyambe after his perceived two 'bad' games. I agree with your second sentence which in my opinion highlights that Mowbray has his favourites and will drop others to play them even if they are out of position.

  24. You are taking the poll as a negative thing. It is a way of getting a general consensus of whether recent criticism of him, very deserved at that, has left our fan base in support of him still or wanting him out. The poll has been useful in proving conclusively that, contrary what some would like you to think, that (based on the sample) the fanbase is still united behind Mowbray staying as manager, with only a tiny minority suggesting otherwise. Hardly the results youd expect from a negative, pessimistic, torch burning fan base desperate for the managers blood. Many would like assurances that he can prove that he is aware of and capable of fixing the major issues currently holding the team back before committing blindly long term. A very fair and open minded stance to have. You also consider discussing the major flaws at the moment as "clogging up the messageboard" so theres no middle ground with you. Theres a poll with an incredibly low percentage of our fans wanting Mowbray out. The exercise has proven that the fans are behind Mowbray. So you choose to moan about the poll in the first place.

A guy comes on with a photo of a watch he's just bought _ " What do we all think of the watch ? " Well I tell him, the dial is too cluttered, I don't like roman numerals, etc " . A bit later on the mods get on to me for spoiling his pleasure ! Couldn't I have been more positive about his purchase ? " He asked me for my opinion then didn't like what I said. Snowflakes are everywhere these days. I told 'em what I thought and walked away from the site.

  31. It’s absolutely impossible to have any rational conversation with some folk on here. Mowbray got us promoted from L1. With the biggest budget in the division. The only real test of Mowbray’s ambition was in the last two games. The next test of his ambition has been when we were 3 points off the play-offs with the January window open. He has recruited very badly but has used the loan market with some success. Sadly the ‘big one’ he got wrong. His tactics and substitutions leave a lot to be desired but that is just how he is. He believes in giving the players the responsibility but he will also blame them when it goes wrong. It’s one way of doing it. When it goes well, ot looks like great team spirit. When it goes badly they can look like strangers. We’ve had two very bad spells, preceded by back to back humblings against local rivals. There has been no pride about is this season. Except maybe the second half 10 men who finally showed up on Sunday. As fans we’d have expected safety to be the target and then push on for a late attempt at a play-off spot. Or just go out and finish as high in the table as we can. Instead it seems like it’s get ourselves nearly safe and then start planning the end of season team party andbookimg your family holidays. The final third of this season could leave a very bad taste indeed. The Summer recruitment would then need to be particularly inspiring to convince people that Mowbray hasn’t hit the comfort zone and wants promotion. (And throw in another season ticket price hike - disguised patronisingly as an early bird offer which is still £50 more than you paid last year). It was a damned sight closer though with three points off sixth, an open transfer window and money to spend than it will be starting at zero with another three ex-PL teams involved. But of course we were keeping our powder dry - which is the same rhetoric we heard from countless managers before him, and another reason to be sceptical of Rovers having changed. The only difference the we wasted £7m on a dud.

  32. Chapman was only a sub last time and that will be the same this time. Rothwell stuck on the bench all year even Conway has started more games than him. Bell is a terrible defender who's afraid to try and stop a cross. As for the young lads Lenihan has regressed from his performances at this level 2 seasons ago. Travis could have been (and should have been) playing all season but he was as good as ostracised from first team action for 10 months after one red card. As for Nyambe he's by far our best full back but he can't get into the team as the manager has to shoehorn Bennett in somewhere even though everyone can see he's not a full back.

  36. I actually think we play some decent stuff at times particularly in the final 3rd on the counter we just waste so many good chances and rely far too much on one steady goal scorer and one creative player. It just needs another striker who knows where the net is - they don't all cost millions and earn 50k pwk at this level - and it needs some solid defenders and that has been the case ever since before we went down. My main gripe at him centres around that he's had windows and money to come up with something but not only hasn't he but he doesn't really seem to have put much stock into it at all. I don't buy into all this bemoaning the fact we can't afford Assambalonga and Austin they knew that from the start of the windows not just in the last few days it's just deflective stuff. They should have been scouring the planet for these guys other clubs seem to turn up players who can do ok they always seem to score against us ! There are other issues but that's just the way he manages so we expect it now and have to accept he'll never change, that goes against him with a few but it isn't a sackable offence at this stage. It has seen him fall on his sword at numerous other clubs after a few years though so the warning signs were always there. Massive summer but it's not all down to him the button pushers have to back him and for the rest of this season the players owe him big time for the faith he puts in them.

  38. So much for the kneejerk myth! The reality is that very few people want Mowbray sacked. Almost everybody appreciates the job he's done and understands that Rovers is far from an easy job. With that said, there have also been some glaring problems under Tony's management - in particular defence - that have never been fixed and remain broken with no obvious sign that the manager is aware or concerned about our appalling defensive record this year. A little reassurance from Mowbray that he's aware of this problem and will be looking into sorting it out ASAP would go a long way, rather than comments suggesting all is fine and we don't need to strengthen.
    2 points
  39. Surprised by how people have voted on this so far... I think people have lost sight on how difficult a job managing Blackburn Rovers is and what mess we were. No manager is perfect and everyone has their failings.
    2 points
  40. If the plan is to try and get out of The Championship at some stage, then Tony isn't the man to do it. He's had 2 years here. Last season we got away with promotion simply because of the relatively poor standard of the 3rd tier - we didn't exactly do a Luton and a lot of our victories were actually closer games than they should have been and largely because of Shrewsbury's poor squad they went to pieces at the end enabling us to avoid a nervy play-off situation. This season we've been largely found out, after many teams underestimated us early doors allowing us to amass relegation avoiding points. The tag-line for this current era (hey let's have a poll) would probably be something like 'square pegs, round roles'. Too many players being played out of position (often half the team). Over complicated tactics etc. Rewarding players because of misplaced loyalty rather than for footballing reasons. This is the running theme. The deal-breaker for me is the negativity. Including downplaying our own team, bigging up other teams to the point where it's laughable (what was it...Bury's left back is Roberto Carlos and Preston are the New 2003-04 Invincibles??? etc). Then very recently i've read certain comments from players about aiming for the play-offs which have been totally contradicted by a manager who got a nose bleed and gave up on the season in January. From a footballing point of view he's not going to take us any further and he's not suddenly going to go on a football manager crash course and change during the summer. He's already long established. Then when you add in the bizarre transfer window tactics (no strengthening of obviously weak areas and blowing the entire transfer budget on a dud). It just further tips the scales. Obviously we don't have any football men at the club to help Tony out and we're run by football hating lunatics, so who knows what is really going on? I think we could well be 10 points worse off this time next season in a real battle.
    2 points
  41. The aim this season was to avoid relegation, anything else was a bonus. Unless we get relegated, which isn't going to happen, then Tony Mowbray should be going nowhere. This club was at the lowest point in it's history before he came in, that cannot be rectified in 2 years. Give the man time to continue to sort the mess out. He's doing a sterling job for me, despite the current blip.

  45. I think its going to take more than a change of formation to evolve our style of play ..its going to cost money. The players we have in certain positions now are simply not good enough to play a more ..footballing ..expansive style of play . Its there to see. If we want to compete consistently and be up in the top six positions next season better class of players are going to be required and that would be my main concern is whether we d have the funds to actually buy these players...regardless of whos the manager. At the moment we are a very mid table side ..which the majority on here thought we would be equating into a decent season on our return to the Championship. To go to the next level is going to take some big funding in my eyes.

  46. He’s not a leader either. I know he’s had a poor season in general too but the only one back there organising and shouting is Lenihan. CM needs to be stripped of the armband come the summer either way as he shouldn’t be a regular starter next season.

  47. I thought the exact same. Sounds like a really odd excuse for not playing him. The two you mention had bad games and were still in the fold, same with Raya, Brereton, Mulgrew to name 3 more. Nyambe was responsible for the Bristol goal when he came on though, so not doing himself any favours, but maybe his confidence is knocked. Mine would be too if I saw Bennett starting ahead of me

  48. I know that i'm banging an old point here (and i'm well aware of the opinions concerning this issue) But! The closure of the DE for home fans has been detrimental (imo) to the atmosphere in the ground. I had to move to the BBE and have okay seats in N01 but the atmosphere is poor. Very little vocal support and I haven't enjoyed going to the games so much (due to the move) so this will probably be my last year with a season ticket.

  50. I'm somewhere between the 2nd and 3rd options. If it were up to me, I'd have a chat with Tony and ask him, "Do you intend to extensively strengthen our defence this summer?". If the answer was no or he showed some hesitancy about that, I'd part ways but let him see it out until or maybe just before the end of the season whilst lining someone else up. The problem isn't so much our league position or even the 4 straight defeats. These things can happen. The problem is the string of bizarre decisions (many of them repeating over and over), an inability to learn, complacency and an apparent lack of ambition.
