  1. wash your mouth out. Mokoena was a warrior for us and we could do with his like right now to show these soft arses what's what. I remember a game at the DW and he totally kicked Wigans midfield all over the park and we won

  2. Pederson would walk into this team. Really struggling to understand why anyone would dislike him. He always speaks highly of the club and put in some excellent performances. He did tail off towards the end but from start to finish he was a good successful signing and one that I enjoyed watching. Some of his goals where outstanding. When was the last time we saw someone score goals of his quality

  3. Andrews wouldn’t walk into our side he really was horrendous, but the Pedersen of 2004-2008 would walk into all the premier league sides currently outside the top six never mind a mid table championship team!

  4. I think the reason was more around his suitability for the style of play they want to adopt. No questioning his ability to screen, work off the ball and play non penetrating passes...and it doesn’t make the management at Rotherham right either. For my money, Smallwood was in top 3 most effective players we had in league 1. I also don’t think clubs lauding a player and making songs up about them is exclusively based on how good they are. Smallwood exceeded our expectations that year and he embodied the honesty, grit and determination that had been sadly lacking at our club for years. We loved him for this.

  5. Hope they get plenty donations to help them through but this really is pathetic how much money are Anderson, Warburtons and the Eddie Davis Trust worth combined ? They are the major shareholders of BWFC so surely to god they could have guaranteed the wages of regular non football staff who are normally employed year round ? Some very wealthy people are some of the very worst forms of human beings

  6. This is completely fair enough & I know I'm guilty of it. Thing is though, the branch of social psychology which the halo effect comes from also finds the opposite mechanism to be true - the 'forked tail' effect, whereby people who have a negative opinion of someone or something allow that view to spill over into viewing other aspects of them negatively. Trying to be reflexive about it, I know I've been overly defensive of TM when it comes to some of the individual decisions that he has made because I think overall he's been great. I also think TM critics have at times been guilty of the reverse though; don't like some aspect of his management, and that has spilled over into over-reactions about things which are either unrelated or not that important. This is a really good case in point. I personally think it's a good thing that TM is the sort of manager which looks after players in Gladwin's position, but I know full well that if TM had decided to let him go as we all expected, I'd be backing him (in fact I'd probably not even give it a seconds thought). Equally, fans may think rightly or wrongly that TM has been too loyal in his selection of his favourites, and the fact that he's is keeping on Gladwin is demonstrative of why we always be hamstrung with Mowbray in charge because of his blind-spots (even though keeping on in injured player for a few months before letting them go has little bearing on how loyal he has been to players who actually get on the pitch, and doesn't point at all to how the rest of the summer is going to go recruitment-wise). Would TM have got the credit for being ruthless for letting Gladwin go (or Conway & the Canadian for that matter)? I doubt it. This obviously gets 10 times worse on a message board where people get even more entrenched in their positions, but I think the irrationality can be found across the piece, not just those of us who get starry eyed about the manager.

  7. Loved the Axe horrendous passer but a bloody good tackler, had a gimpy run but got all over the pitch. Fa cup semi against Chelsea he was everywhere.

  8. Agreed. Excellent points by both you and @OnePhilT - which I missed so thanks for quoting. Halo effect: There seems to be an accepting of everything that the club does while Mowbray is here as positive and right, and anyone who questions anything as negative or irrational. There was a post from someone having a proper rant about the “over-reaction” to basically disappointment about us being “in talks” with a player who even when fully fit was useless. Something which is already contrary Mowbray’s close season rhetoric. Instead of blocking their paths with mediocre players, we need to spend more time nurturing our young talent like Buckley or Butterworth, or even the less obvious Davenport. If we can get better value in the transfer market then fine but they need to be proven Championship-level talent as we already have plenty of potential. If players don’t make the grade then sorry but that’s professional football. If you don’t like it go and get a proper job.

  12. I’ll definitely be watching the nations league. Was half tempted to go but need to pick my battles for sporting trips plus it’s in coimbra (euro 2004 place) and maybe Porto for the final. So not too fussed about the former again. I reckon that nations league will be taken increasingly seriously as the years go by. Qualifiers are now a joke for the top sides (hesitantly consider England to be one currently) so a format where the dregs play the dregs and best teams play the best teams is all good for me. As for women’s football don’t want to go all Andy gray and Richard Keys but I’m not interested whatsoever. Every game I’ve watched the standard has been appalling. They could win a clean sweep or lose every game 10-0 I couldn’t care less.

  13. I'm excited about the nations cup. Should be a cracking set of 3 games, a bit like the playoffs. I think weve got a really exciting squad. Alexander-Arnold, Stones, Maguire, Chilwell, Henderson (who I've come round from skepticism to really liking), Sancho, Sterling, Kane, Radford are all really decent players in my opinion. I reckon we can do it.

  14. Bauer showed exactly why we shouldn't and probably won't be after him during that Donny equaliser. Beaten in the air by someone about a foot shorter than him. Too busy trying to claim a foul. I've been impressed by Whiteman so far. Quietly going about his business but his passing looks accurate and he does play it forward a bit too.

  15. Boaz Myhill been released by W Brom today... could do worse as competition for Raya?

  16. Bauer just got absolutely mugged off for Donny's second goal. Mulgrew-esque 'challenge' for a high ball from a corner. No thanks.

  17. I don’t think Whiteman or Aribo are promotion chasing championship players. Bauer looks decent... I retract the Bauer comment. His defending for that goal was shocking!!

  19. Good post. Interesting the bit in bold, and very honest. For me, the club is the shirt, the badge and the fact that it represents the town that I was born in, and still live in. It’s mine. I don’t own it but it’s mine. I want it to be as successful as it possibly can be because it represents me. There are people who I meet now who haven’t even heard of us. Thanks Venkys! Managers, players, suits, even owners come and go. There are some I love and some I hate but none of them are beyond question. If I don’t think they are doing the right thing for my club I’ll curse and I’ll moan but as long as people stay civil and we have the ignore function, for the “ad hominees”, all is well. ??

  20. The transfer thread traditionally gets very busy throughout the Summer with everyone desperate for the early gen. It sounds like you have designs on being a bit of a scoop-merchant. We’ve had these kinds of folks before - including a particularly infamous one who now gets his ego stroked over on Twitter (no, not you meadows). Just be aware that if you are going to blur the lines between facts (news) and fiction (opinion) your stock will fall and the board will start to get antsy with the likely mods then threatening to “bang people’s heads together”. You seem like a decent chap and your heart is in the right place, so just preempting (so as to avoid) problems more than anything. If you want to call it eagerness that’s up to you. Cheers.

  21. Don't think Barnsley are really in the business of signing players on their last legs. They're a very clued up operation these days with their new owners and structure in place and I think will be signing players from all over the place, most of them young end. A similar recruitment policy to Brentford. Someone like Rotherham or Doncaster would be more likely for Conway.

  28. Good to see Bury survive until their next crisis. Watched Pompey v Sunderland in back ground last night. Both clubs woefully short on quality. Sunderland several players short of what will be needed to survive if they go up. Ref extremely lenient with the cards also.

  31. I applaud the club's decision to give Gladwin some security over the next six months to get his life and career back on track. He's had an horrendous two years and that must take it's toll mentally and physically. I don't think for one second this is about giving him a chance to get into our team, it's about doing right by the player. He's unlikely to play again until 2020 so that would be many months without any income for a player who I doubt has earnt that much during his career so far. Give him a chance to get fit and play some U23 games on a very low wage and hopefully he can get himself noticed by another club. If we don't do that then his football career is potentially over. I think it would be different if it was a player like Rodwell who has millions in the bank, but this is a player who has predominantly played in the lower leagues all his career.

  34. Whitman neat holding position well, good accurate passing and one phenomenal tackle upfield which should have made a goal. Nerveless penalty too. But in a game like that too quiet to be potential championship promotion material. Bauer out muscled and out jumped for Doncaster second and utterly AWOL for the third. No thanks.

  35. Strange old career that lad. Seemed to be a favourite for Huddersfield as they won promotion. Then gets loaned out to Oxford down in League One before joining us. Then goes back to League One at Bradford where I've not heard or seen much of him as they got relegated. EDIT - sounds like he might be joining Barnsley now Huddersfield have released him.

  40. It's all relative - he'd walk into our current side, as would anyone from the Premier League years (except Andrews and Pedersen). I can't recall the lyrics, but it was to the tune of La Macarena, obviously.

  41. He wasn’t a gifted footballer but he didn’t half commit to tackles. He was certainly no Herold Goulon! Remember the song about him??

  42. It wasn’t at the time. It was at the height of anti-Venkys feeling and a cynical move by the club to “show” that the hardcore were onside. That ad was and remains very emotive for a lot of people. Interesting that he later joined the Venkys Out chorus. Wonder what he thinks these days? Probably defeated and accepting that we are stuck with them. We have a very uneasy truce for the time being as long as they keep their gobs shut and don’t bring in any more Coyles.

  43. Interesting how other fans/clubs view players. In L1 Richie, well backed by Rovers fans (how many current players have their own song?) he was excellent. In the Championship it’s beyond him physically - both strength and speed. Yet a League One side, also not good enough for the second tier, don’t want him while Rovers fans continue to make allowances.

  44. More like Sheffield Wednesday are ahead of us in the process and are in a position to crack on with negotiations whilst our senior management team don't know what the score is and have to get back from India before the button can be pressed.

  46. That's a great point and pertinent to the debate. There is still some bitterness from good people who lost their jobs or had their hours cut because of sheer incompetence of the owners and people running the club. My real concern though is that Mowbray wants to keep players who simply aren't good enough and will add no value whilst costing not insignificant wages. We have under 23's who play in the positions (and probably better) of the likes of Conway and they will probably be sent out on loan.

  48. If you want to attract high quality employees you better as hell make sure that current ones are treated very well. The cost will be minimal, but our conduct won't go unnoticed amongst fellow professionals. An accidental work injury is not the fault of the employee and is one of the most important times to ensure that you look after your staff. Businesses should have morals.
