  2. Can't agree with this. We have ONE decent, proven striker and he's well into his thirties. We need 4 players at least----centre-back, striker, keeper and left-back. All needed last time, never addressed. Problems are increasing every time we have a failed window (ie every time there's a window) Incredible that TM doesn't cop more flack than he does. Charmed life.

  3. The fat new contracts for Evans et al biting him on the arse, as expected. If only ‘negative brfcs’ had just ‘trusted the manager’ when he was doling them out.

  4. I'm speechless that you are still trotting that out as if it's fact when I don't think anyone else on the board shares that view. We all know he could reach that point practically overnight, but we all know (except you) that it hasn't happened yet.

  5. The Gallagher transfer can wait till the last day of the window for me, if at all. We don't NEED him, although he'd be decent backup. Just sort the defence and keeper situation then leave the 'nice to have' transfers till later when prices and demands drop. If we miss out on him so be it.

  6. If we have limited money and it is spent on Gallagher in preference to GK and defender then there is something wrong. Everyone knows our priority needs. Nothing against Gallagher coming in if we can afford all 3 but if we can't then surely he would be the wrong choice.

  7. I was at Bramall lane and I might be imagining this but Travis started that game? Ergo - how did he only break the squad due to a suspension in the same game?

  8. Not much to be honest, Gallagher told Wigan he wasn’t willing to join them Monday, he would join us, mowbray wants him but believe there is still a way to go with fee with Southampton. Still expect this one to be done. gk deals are in place but again they are heavy wages involved , mowbray can’t pull trigger until he knows what pot he is pissing in . There is an a option A and a B option depending on shifting on some deadwood. Trouble being these players aren’t gathering much attention and those that are can’t compete with silly wages we gave out last year with new contracts. Might have to loan players out and pay some of the wages just to recoup some money back. Travis interest was from Norwich and Bournemouth but believe mowbray has vetoed that before any bid has came in. Not an awful lot moving the now, even loans are proving difficult to complete. Won’t start going until clubs return from training camps and managers decide who is staying for 25 man squad and who needs shipped out. Sorry it’s not great news on the new faces front, mowbray is feeling severely frustrated blaming agents and clubs for being too greedy

  9. The whole Sam Gallagher saga is becoming a bit of a farce now. Sign him up or move on. We're not going to get him on the cheap.

  10. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_tHXTBlCCk Can view it here at about 0:53. Reckless tackle by Smallwood, though it was that odd one where he actually caught way more of Bennett than the Sheffield player... Can see why the ref went for a red, but probably deserved a yellow on closer review! (Just as an aside on Smallwood, it's worth noting he apparently was keen on long-term deal after our L1 promotion but was only offered a one-year extension. His deal expires after this coming year, so I doubt it'll be too difficult to at least loan him out to cut the wage bill if we find no takers. Hardly a crippling contract extension and seemed fair enough after an excellent L1 campaign but hard to see him making it into the squad much now.)

  11. How can Mowbray not know which pot he is pissing in Bbrovers2288? He's been given a budget and just sold Raya. Get the feeling that TM in the transfer market is like when your nan would give you 20p to get a bag of chips. Then you had to patiently point out that chips were now a quid, while she sat there flabbergasted. A lot said at the time that those contract extensions were bonkers. Now we struggle to get the deadwood off the books...again. Trust Tony.

  12. I think you need to read the post properly first of all. I said we don't NEED Gallagher, I didn't say we don't need a striker. We play with 1 striker up top, anyone we bring in is gonna be playing second fiddle to Graham, this season at least. Graham isn't knackered at all, in fact he looks in tip top shape. Its debatable how much more Gallagher offers than all the other crop of strikers to be quite honest too. If bringing him in a) cuts into our budget set aside for a gk/defender b)limits Breretons game time (or even Chapmans if he plays him on the pissing wing) then it's bad business. As I originally stated, leave it till we sort the major priorities I.e keeper and defence then pick up a bargain striker or a loan if need be.

  17. The A list keeper and defender should be his sole priority. They don't appear to be - instead he has bloated the midfield himself and sounds like most focus is on making sure we get Gallagher in before we decide whether we can have the A list or B list goalie and defender. For me, sod Gally until we've settled the goalie and defender question. It's not like he's a superstar and it's not like we are short in numbers there, or quality when Graham is fit. We are very short in quality (and numbers) in goal and defence even when everyone is fit. Something else concerns me. Your earlier post indicated that both the keeper and centre half signings might be loans. That would be pretty unhelpful come next summer. We'd then have no keeper again, the same poor defence with Mulgrew a year older and even slower (and out of contract?), Downing gone, Johnson 33, and Gallagher presumably. Basically, this window would achieve, in the longer term, just adding Gallagher and losing Raya, and if we're lucky we could maybe get another good season out of Johnson. For the same budget as last year, I don't care how anyone spins it, that would be disastrous business. It won't have made us anywhere near good enough to go up this season either I shouldn't think.

  18. Not falling for that one again. We had this talk all last summer of Mowbray sticking to his guns, not budging, not gambling, waiting for his preferred targets to come rather than going elsewhere and risking things. What happened? We started throwing silly bids around as deadline day approached, ended up paying £7 million on Brereton, spent 12 months pursuing Patrick Bauer only to see him join Preston and failed to strengthen in January. This noble 'sticking to our guns' approach isn't so good if we end up empty handed, overpaying or picking up dross (which has happened in the last two windows). I thought things were meant to be better planned these days?

  19. Depressing read this morning. IMO, it's simple - we have a manager who doesn't know the market and hasn't a clue how to work it. As others have posted, Mowbray has made a rod for his own back. IMO, spunked away £7million+ and wages on Brereton, handed out new contracts to deadwood we are now trying to shift and seemingly is now frustrated as 'agents and players and agents are too greedy' (a bit rich as I think he's helped fuel it with his own actions). He has a budget - at least we are told that so for feck sake, get on and manage it. Start with priorities (GOALKEEPER(s) & DEFENDERS) and forget both the Gallagher nonsense (IMO a 3 out of 10 striker to replace a 1 out of 10 striker who has seemingly financially hamstrung us) and a desire to collect ageing and not inexpensive midfielders. I think the chickens are coming are to roost and Mowbray's ineffectual management and trading of playing resources is costing us badly.

  20. For those criticising the contracts given out, have you forgotten when for around 2/3 seasons, we would finish the end of the year with hardly a match day squad still on the cards? The squad then needed quite a few new faces, inevitably bolstered by loans, which resulted in the same situation the following year. Players were leaving at the end of contracts or final 12 months, meaning it was hard to get any value out of them. Whilst bigger wages and renewed contracts may mean we are stuck with a couple of players (for which interest is not guaranteed anyway) I would rather be in this position than losing the likes of King & Mahoney on frees, while 4 members of the first team leave every year due to their loan ending.

  21. Thanks you. Im happy with the Sam Gallagher situation and had similar info re him turning Wigan down (wasn’t about money). I think we’re right to dig in for the best deal possible. Still think that will happen this week. I know one of the clubs who fancy Smallwood (assuming he’s the main culprit) along with maybe Evans. The money isn’t massive tbh. But it’s a little rich for League 1. They’re just hanging on (like we are with Gally) for a better deal. Great news about Travis. I never doubted it because I know how much they love him, Buckley, Butterworth and Magloire. The appointment of Jonty into the first team set up is absolute genius in terms of bridging their (and others) transition into first XI. Sounds like the budget is similar but with us targeting higher profile players with championship experience, the wages are soaking up cash much quicker than last season. Thanks again for sharing. Try not to get your cover blown mate. You’re pitching this perfectly but they don’t like stuff getting out. Even when you’re as balanced as you are! ??

  25. I posted a list a few pages back, every 20+ goal scorer last season cost significantly less than £5m, except Rodriguez who was bought for £12m when WBA were in the Premier League. It was all simply good scouting from the lower and european leagues, with a home grown prospect or two thrown in. Granted many of these were bought a few seasons back, but it just shows the value of looking ahead (and I don't mean by spending £7m on a youngster). If Gallagher scored 8-10 goals then I'd consider that reasonable considering he'd probably be spending most of his game time on the right wing. But it would only be reasonable if he was on loan or bought for significantly less than £5m.

  26. As we've seen with Raya countless times and Nyambe and Lenihen young lads in defence learning their trade make mistakes and complete cock ups and it costs. it's to be expected of course. That's why there is clamour for experienced defensive reinforcements and that's why it would be wrong to expect Magloire to just step up and solve the problems. There's a whole two seasons process to go through for these lads and yes we want them in but relying on them as regulars will inevitably cost the team so a loan spell would be best in the long run. Do we want to just blood youngsters and sell them on whilst sitting in the middle of the division comfortably lining peoples pockets with little pressure or do we want to kick on ?

  27. Don't think he is ready yet. I think he could do with a loan to compete with men, especially in the air. He's had it to easy with the U23 where he can outmuscle and outrun his peers. Joe Garner and Steven Fletcher dominated him quite easily in the games he played for the seniors. A year on loan learning to play the position and compete, and we probably have a machine on our hands. Quickest player in the squad as well.

  28. Because if we don't have the money for players that we need to go into the team right now because we've spent a lot of money on a player that isn't yet ready for the first team, then that's a problem.

  29. Again, no issue with bringing in a young player. Armstrong, fine example at an initial £1.75m. BB, at that price, was not logical or ‘common sense’.

  31. No but in that situation the Dr is an expert giving you solicited advice in this situation your opinion is coming unsolicited everyday and while your completely entitled to have it your no more an expert than anyone else. We get it YOU don't like Mowbray YOU think Brereton was a bad deal YOU don't want Gally I however liked him during his last spell here I'd quite like to sign him am I right I don't know time will tell but you don't either.

  33. No problem with players being signed up. The issue here was they were handed out far too early in the season, when we were on a decent run of form/full of promotion momentum. In the new year, as form dipped, it was clear Mulgrew, as an example, was struggling at this level. Therefore signing him up to 2021, on presumably some of the biggest wages in the club, months previously was a ridiculous state of affairs. Why the rush to sign up Evans/Smallwood/Bennett/Mulgrew so early before they’d had chance to see if they are up to the required level? I doubt clubs were falling over themselves to check their availability in September. Very poor planning and as said on here, ‘we’ll pay for it in the summer’.

  36. I think we're at the pessimistic stage of thinking: Will missing out on Sam Gallagher for £5m plus wages be a disaster? No. Would not bringing in a quality GK and CB be a disaster? Yes Do you trust TM to spend £5m on Sam Gallagher and still bring in a quality GK and CB? Also no. Rationally, buying Gallagher shouldn't and probably isn't being done at the expense of the GK and CB, and I'm sure (?) it's simply another piece of the managers puzzle. However, it's natural to be worried that he is spunking all our funds on Sam Gallagher because he actually has no clue how to actually spend his budget properly... (BB, August 2018).

  37. Think Bruce is a poor man's Big Sam. When Sam leaves a club, sadly they mainly go one way (Bolton from Europe downwards and now in administration), Newcastle relegated (Ashley should have showed balls and stuck with Sam), Rovers..........from top 10 PL to almost oblivion, need we say any more, Sunderland....well. Good and effective managers are hard to find and worth their weight in gold.

  40. Don't remember a Bruce managed side at this level ever struggling. Birmingham, Hull, Villa always there or thereabouts around the top 6, four promotions and a play-off final, very decent record at Wednesday last season too. Maybe not promotion ready but certainly won't be in relegation trouble under him. In the Premier League he struggles but in the Championship I'd class him alongside McCarthy and Warnock as extremely good at what he does. Maybe not easy on the eye but results speak for themselves.

  43. Yes - 4231 really suits him. I really want to see us to consistently start Graham up front, Dack at 10, Rothwell on the left and Chapman/Downing on the right. Will be our best attacking line in years. Johnson and Travis have the workrate and quality to build a strong platform for that attacking line to prosper. All for naught though if the defence and GK isn't radically overhauled.

  44. It's absolutely crucial that we bring someone in who can carry on Johnno's good work. The flow of good young players the club is bringing through needs to continue.
    3 points
  45. The further you push him back, the less able he is to get the goals and assists he has. His game is geared around being in and around the box, hes a second striker more than an attacking midfielder and hes a natural poacher around the box, scoring so many tap ins and close range goals. Ultimately, two of the main things that held him back were an incredibly rigid and direct style of play, and also the use of limited players around him, picked for defensive reasons. Rothwell seemed to link up much better with him for example than having a Bennett, Conway or Reed wide. Moving him further back would be crazy. He is our best player, and he is best suited to a 10 role off a striker. The team should be built around him.

  46. I don’t remember a single person on this website saying Evans contract was a good idea but you carry painting it as if a select few clever lads on here knew best. Oh you mean there’s pro’s and con’s to situations? It’s never simply black and white? Get out of town mate - that’s too sensible for here The shambles? I’m sorry Rev but I disagree. We stayed up, we added quality to squad- yea BB at this point needs to step up but I don’t buy into this constant whinge about transfer business. As for loans. It’s just the business we are in. If you are a professional (use Reed as an example) who wants to improve and play every week - you’re not going to leave your club until you know that door is shut. Other players will wait for the best money. You can call it suicidal if you want, I call it a product of being in the scenario we are in. Read a potential tidbit from above, much on hold till EPL decide squads. Just a reminder for those who can’t remember what a summer shambles looks like;
    3 points
  47. Goalkeeper and defence are the priority. Even if Venkys aren't putting money in this summer there's the Raya cash plus what was left over from January. No excuses. Sick of hearing it.
    3 points
  48. Exactly. I’m also finding it quite amusing that people are now using Travis as a reason to celebrate Mowbray’s influence yet when I was promoting him and complaining when he was left out for Evans and Smallwood folks were telling me that Mowbray knows best.
