  1. Somewhere on a Reading forum, member MercerRoyal is saying:- "You'd think we were playing the Northern Real Madrid listening to you lot. We are playing a team who are only 3 points for in front of us because they beat a piss poor Millwall side at home They only drew with Cardiff, who we played off the pitch, and have had a shocking away record every season they've been in this league recently. If we can't beat this team, managed by a football dinosaur, then it's time to knock the Madjeski down and build a skate park on it. I'm going for a 3-0 win and will be toasting my winnings with a nice bottle of red come Saturday evening."

  2. Good news: Reading boss is unsure of Rovers' system. Bad news: Rovers boss is unsure of Rovers' system. 1-1.

  3. A few weeks ago I would have agreed with you. But he has improved the last couple games. Would still prefer to see Nyambe developing on the pitch, though...

  4. Have really high hopes for this one. I get (and share, to to a degree) the view that we already have a tonne of players in his position(s) and it's hard to know who should be left out. Having said that, how many times have we brought in players in similar circumstances and they've turned out to improve us no end. Friedel, Tugay and Samba jump out straight away. If only we took a similar approach to Zidane then we might've been a very different club these days. Spoke very well in his interview too, hope he's as impressive on the pitch.

  5. Just caught up with this. On paper this is a brilliant bit of business fair play to TM and crew.

  6. Absolute mongs the lot of them why doesn't it dawn on some that cheering on players even when they are having a bad day is the best way to get them going ? Shithousing your own players especially new ones is the work of arseholes.

  7. People round us used to scapegoat Lucas Neill and others Pedersen. Even when they got MOTM awards and barely put a foot wrong. Some people have very closed minds

  8. Also needs Gallagher to score more and be a focal point.

  9. I feel like this is moving us into 343 (or 3421) territory, which sounds exciting but MUST be done correctly. I'm thinking: Walton Lenihan Tosin Williams Bennett Travis Johnson Cunningham Holtby Dack Gallagher Solid back 3, Bennett and Cunningham as wing backs rather than full backs (also allows for the pace of Nyambe and Bell later in games). Travis and Johnson to act as the complete engine room, harassing in midfield. Gally as the focal point if attack (targetman) with Holtby and Dack roaming behind. IF that is the plan, I think it can work well BUT will require defensive reinforcement in January imo.

  10. Was very impressed with him - great passion for the club.

  11. What a crazy week its been for Rovers, picked up a decent result against Millwall, picked up a cheeky wee signing in Lewis Holtby and now to wrap it up on the weekend against Reading. Build up starts here… Be sure to check out some fan input: Reading fan – The Mexican Rover –

  12. At the risk of be called negative again I'd be more thrilled about this signing if I could figure out an emerging pattern of play for the team. We seem to be collecting central midfield players. Inevitably we only have room for 3 at the most in the centre unless we start playing them out of position.Unless the manager is planning to come up with a yet undiscovered way of playing IE a 3-6-1 formation I'm puzzled as to our recruitment policy If this guy was an experienced striker I'd be over the moon, but he's not. When Kenny Dalglish first came in and started signing players it was like watching someone completing a jigsaw. Every hole in the team was gradually filled in and each signing fitted into a system and way of playing.

  13. Im impressed with his first interview, seems to be a decent lad and genuinely looks excited. Lets see how he settles, hopefully him and Dack can form a decent midfield partnership. Johnson and Travis to add the steel also. just hope our strikers can find their scoring boots.

  15. Which, of course, Mowbray stumbled upon by pure accident...............

  16. Trouble with a lot of three at the back systems is that they look good on paper without being as impressive on Saturdays, but I have to say I really like that. Rothwell, Graham and Armstrong to come in should we make changes to how we play. A side that can cause anyone in this league problems.

  18. Mowbray said in the LT today that we also looked at re signing Lucas Joao. Our striking search seems to have lacked a little imagination this summer, were Marvin Emnes, Anthony Stokes and Fode Koita also considered?! Still feel like a prolific striker could have been the key, Gallagher is both the most underwhelming signing IMO that we made this summer and also the only one that cost a transfer fee. The other 6 look in the main to have very much improved us. Still think Graham is out on his own as our best striker, regardless of age.

  19. It is a bit strange that someone who only signs up for the 1875 club for £15 a season can get tickets for this for £10, yet someone who stumps up £300-400 and doesn't join the 1875 club has to pay a fiver more. Seems like 1875 members are held in higher regard than season ticket holders sometimes.

  20. How many games have we been unchanged under Mowbray? Answers on a postage stamp.

  21. Never heard of him but liking what I’m hearing. If what Mowbray says is true that the Recruiting dept raised his name during the window, it shows to be what a nightmare it must be juggling transfer priorities. I can well imagine the last minute push for Reed was a reaction to them deciding they weren’t going to get this guy. Reed doesn’t come, then this guy turns down other offers, now he’s ours and no-one is saying “Wish we had Reed instead.” I make that six first-teamers now signed since last season. The one thing we won’t be doing is treading water.

  22. We can't possibly keep all the mid-fielders we've got so let's hope we lose the right ones! However, a bit of class is what we lack and this signing is what we need.

  23. Wow they have their very own Mercer how funny is that. Oh wait, you made it up? Hey I just woke up.

  24. Potential too be signing of the season in the Championship, if we can get this lad back near his best we will have a player on our hands. Really excited about this. Welcome Lewis ??

  25. Our stadium manager, matchday police and whoever else involved don't seem to want that it makes a dozy lazy day at Ewood hardwork they don't want shaking out of their slumber by home and away fans shouting at each other over a fence, block of seats and netting, it's all part of the match day experience at most grounds but not the trailblazers at Ewood. Seems they'd much rather alienate a few hundred into not coming at all.

  26. Mowbray seems genuinely delighted and surprised we have signed him.....which means either a) Venkys have gone big on his wages/sign on fee b) he is taking a hit to join a club where he's wanted and sees some opportunity In either scenario it's great to sign a player with some pedigree that has generated excitement amongst the fanbase. Fans of other clubs are also overwhelmingly jealous! Brilliant!

  27. I always thought he was decent at spurs and that level is more than good enough for us. Has said all the right things. Seems to have matured and turned into a true pro. Hopefully he could be a good influence on our squad. I sometimes fear that we have a bit of a wide boy culture, so adding a serious pro with a good pedigree could be just what we need.

  28. Complaining that we have too much competition in midfield. I long for the days of Akpan and Guthrie.

  29. really worry you? I think its shows how flexible we are now in comparison to 2 years and we can adapt to different situations and tactics. We need to have the ability to play 2 or 3 different formations in my opinion.

  30. We do usually seem to have a small gene pool when it comes to recruitment. That’s why the Holtby signing is so interesting. A real wild card - and potential joker in the pack by the looks of things.

  31. I don’t hate Bennett, far from it. I just think he’s a rotten right back and I’ve seen too many over hit crosses over the last couple of seasons to know that we must have better in the ranks. I think it’s holding us back to a certain extent. Good managers will target this weakness over the 46 games. He is a good lad Benno, but not starting

  32. Bookies have them as slight favourites, i'm going for a Holtby inspired 1-3. That's if it counts as 'Holtby inspired' despite him not being in the match day squad

  36. Yes, a cracking squad but have we got a cracking team ? We'll soon see. On another tack we need half a dozen off the wage bill ASAP. The guys who aren't likely to figure in the immediate future.

  37. I don't agree about our away form. So far this season we have played well away from home, just not got the full return we deserve. I think we may well have deserved to take a point at Fulham or WBA, we didn't so it may look like a bad start. To be honest I would be more worried about our results and performances at home.

  38. Holtby also provides serious competition for Dack. We need that competition in midfield because it drives players on to be the best. If we can come up with a system that allows us to play Dack and Holtby from the start, with Rothwell coming on to replace the leggier of the two, then we have a serious mix of creativity and pace.

  39. He looks like he has all the pieces - hopefully Mowbray can put them together. I can't say I remember him playing over here but reading this thread he sounds promising. We really need to pay Smallwood up now and cancel his contract to let him move on.

  40. Sounds like a perfect attitude. Welcome Lewis Holtby.

  41. Rovers' win by two goal margin. What's the doubt? We are playing a team in 17th place, 3 points behind us and who've lost their last two games. Keep saying it but reading posts on here would make you think we are playing Barca, City and Liverpool rolled into one! For fecks sake, if we can't go to Reading with confidence and come away with something then it's time a supermarket was built on Ewood.

  42. Cracking signing at this stage of the season nice little between windows boost well done TM and all concerned. Hope it's a signing for the right reasons and it works out. More to the point use him in his best position and he'll bring maximum benefit to the team, no shoehorning please.

  43. Fourth fittest in the squad after training with a fourth tier German team? Makes you wonder what the rest of the squad have been up to! Be interesting to see where he plays and when, certainly seems a character.

  44. As long as he improves / adds, to the team I don't care who is dropped.

  45. Lots of good ideas in this post, as well as the thread as a whole (the discount on loyalty I particularly liked - 5% in year 2 etc.) Just goes to show the boys in the job really don’t have a clue. Just pick up their handsome salary with no affiliation to the club at all and in the grand scheme are doing absolutely nothing to engage fans (it’s their bloody job!)

  46. The type of player worth paying for. Other players will see him play for us and be more inclined to join. Quality attracts quality. Need to offload Smallwood now in January.

  47. When we got relegated the season ticket price stayed the same despite an awful season and I don't think the sales suffered too much. After promotion the prices went up by around 18%and sparked some real debate about the justification for it. From a club point of view it was naive in the extreme and Waggott and Co tried to justify by saying we were in the Championship. They simply didn't cash in on the feel good factor after promotion and on the back of a sell out against Oxford. I think Waggott completely misjudged the local people and instead of speaking to supporters about how attendances can be improved he went ahead with a significant and unjustified increase. There have been lots of good ideas on the various attendance threads which Waggott would do well to read and cherry pick the more practical and workable ones. I find it ironic that we got slapped with a large increase whilst the people who decided on that increase don't pay for their attendance. In fact the likes of Waggott and Cheston will more than likely be wined and dined too.

  48. Cunningham came straight into the side though? As has Tosin when hes been fit? And Johnson? And Downing? And Gallagher?
    1 point
  49. But the counter argument is that Johnson has been fundamental to the recent clean sheets as he screens the central defenders better than any other player. I have been happy with the Johnson/Travis pairing so far and collectively and individually they are light years ahead of any other central midfielders.
    1 point
  50. Well after watching a lot of both Johnson and Travis it's Johnson who continually gives away the ball in dangerous areas game after game. But Mowbray called Travis out on it after the Hull game which is weird, but consistent with how he seems to be critical with young players but not older ones.
