  1. If Brereton is still here at the end of the window then IMV that is a failure on our part to help this kid out. He clearly needs to get out of here for a bit and rediscover his form. Keeping him here for u23 matches and playing the odd match here or there, largely out of position, isn't protecting the player or our significant investment. It's just making a bad situation even worse.

  2. They can rot in hell for me. We need bailing out to the tune of £20m per season, due to theirs and their stakeholders, total disregard for the club and Jack's legacy, when they bought it. All this nonsense about them being badly advised and now they have learned their lessons, is total garbage. They were complicit in what went on and they got their fingers burnt due to them being stitched up good and proper, by the person that sold them the dream of easy money. Pure greed for them to want to make a quick buck and now, as they can't bail out without a full and proper investigation, they are left propping it up. It is my view that they daren't sell, as some very deep and horrible goings on could be uncovered and they dare not risk that. Lurching from one crisis to another seems to have been the order of the day, since they arrived and it won't be getting better any time soon.

  3. So this seems to have escalated quickly! I had no intention of upsetting anyone and was merely trying to have a joke! Any inside information we receive on here is always warmly appreciated and always will be! Apologies if I’ve upset you, but that really wasn’t what I was aiming to do!

  7. From the limited views I've had of our younger players, JRC and Butterworth look physically capable of stepping up straight away. Buckley's frame shouldn't be an issue long term, as many 'slight' technical players excel - like Coutinho. However, I do feel he'd benefit massively from 6 months playing regularly in league one. Get used to the physicality and learn how to win free kicks instead of being eased off the ball by a stronger player. He's clearly got the technical side, needs to learn the dark arts...

  8. He was clearly joking. Maybe K-Hod and I have similar senses of humour - I thought it was funny and feel you need to lighten up a touch regarding this post and keep the toys in the pram - so to speak. From my point of view, Mods don't need to be soulless, opinionless entities (not your view, I know) who donate all of their life without showing a bit of personality, but certainly - leave moderation to them because they do a superb job on here and are extremely fair. The thread over the years isn't solely about people like Chaddy (no offence) hankering for vague info from genuine or non-genuine sources, Twitter rumours, or just back-slapping and blowing smoke up behinds. And to be honest, I've not read anything on here lately that wasn't already on Newsnow or something. Anyway, when there's something with real meat on the bones, I am sure it'll generate interest and that'll be all we'll focus on for a while - but do get used to debates on the edge of acceptability when things are stagnant.

  9. Really is mythical at this point though. We might as well discuss our plans to play Theseus on a pegasus up front, and fund it by selling the golden fleece.

  10. Bit of a tangent, but I was thinking about that Smallwood contract. It is an odd case if he's still around at the end of the window. He's obviously keen to see out his current contract (which is fair), but if it's been made clear to him he's out of the squad picture, it's hard to see why we couldn't at least loan him out for a portion of his wages to cut costs a bit and get him some lower league game-time. I'd imagine Smallwood would have to push for such a move himself too, so it is curious if he's not keen on it given a whole year with only 2 appearances hardly looks good on the footballing CV! Perhaps Rovers are playing hardball with lower league clubs hoping to take him on loan at zero cost (Mowbray briefly alluded to that about potential loans out) or Smallwood only wants to move for a guaranteed contract for next year. That would potentially mean sacrificing some of his current contract, but even then, Rovers could maybe subsidise his wage a bit for the rest of this year as long as it's still cutting our wage this year, effectively making it a subsidised loan for the rest of this year and then a professional deal lined up for next year... No signs at all that he's a 'bad egg' in the dressing room and I can't imagine he's on prohibitive wages, so not a big deal in the end, but very curious from Smallwood's POV. In terms of Smallwood being wrongly handed an extension, 1) he did do a hell of a job for us in L1. There is some sense/honour in rewarding him accordingly (and I don't recall many complaints about it at the time). 2) If you look back, there is evidence that we did hold the line on his extension. Smallwood hinted that the negotiations dragged a bit and that he wanted a longer-term deal (who could blame him): https://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/sport/16354537.signed-lifetime-contract-rovers---smallwood/ Perhaps in retrospect a regrettable extension, but having said that, I took a glance at Smallwood's games last year, and our results were surprisingly effective with him in the lineup at first. Up to, and including, 10 Nov, over 15 games with Smallwood in the lineup, our record was 6-6-3, a 74 point pace. However, for his last 17 games in the lineup, our record was 2-5-10, a 30 point pace... Now, obviously can't attribute all those results to Smallwood, but as a quick control, compare that to our season split: front 23 games, 62 point pace; back 23 games, 58 point pace. Perhaps those results were more in spite of him instead of because of him, but there appears to have been an initial delay in Smallwood being 'found out' at the Championship level (again) and, then eventually (probably too long), by Mowbray. Aye, The Athletic had a great read on this recently too (excuse the paywall if you can't access it!): https://theathletic.com/1536639/2020/01/17/brentford-b-reserves-scrapped-academy-premier-league/ Apologies if this repeats what's in that article above, but some general notes from the Athletic article: - Brentford essentially concluded that running a Category Two academy was not worth the cost, as players very rarely rose from the u13s to the pro level, and even when they did, the compensation for Category Two development is not nearly high enough (the article suggests Brentford only got something like £30,000 each when Ian Carlo Poveda and Josh Bohui went to City and Liverpool). - However, I'd note that this doesn't quite apply to Rovers' Category One academy. For one, I don't know the specifics, but I think the compensation is much better for a player coming through a Category One setup (I'd be interested to know what we got for Callum Wright, for example). Brentford mentions the difficulty of grabbing youngsters with all the top London clubs next door, which technically applies to Rovers as well, but I suspect we wouldn't lose out to too many of the Manchester catchment area clubs on facilities-alone (which sounds like was the case for Brentford) - There's also a 'sunk costs' element to it, with us already having top academy facilities that should still be utilised. It wouldn't be as simple for Rovers to suddenly decide to liquidate the academy and start up 'Blackburn Rovers B'... - Instead, Brentford have opted for a roving B team of 18-21 players, shunning the PDL leagues as insufficient prep in favour of travelling against international reserve squads or even top-league squads looking for a tune-up (the article mentions they got to play Slavia Prague's 1st teamers as they prepped for the Champions League). It gives these 18-21 players, perhaps not ready for Championship football stiffer competition than the PDL leagues can provide (kind of reminds me of Chelsea loaning out an army of footballers each season rather than putting them in PL2 year after year... except Brentford is keeping them all within one team) - Should be noted that Brentford's efforts have not been welcome, given they're essentially sticking their nose up to the EPPP and PDL, and it evokes the possibility of B teams starting up in the lower leagues... - Lots of Scandis in that age range have come over, with some breaking through and others on the cusp. However, this is of course linked to their owner also owning FC Midtjylland (some of whose players have been loaned to Brentford B, and vice versa). Definitely could highlight the need for creativity in scouting Europe. - One bit that I think we do follow to some extent is trying to poach the cast-offs of other top academies. Brentford, apparently, offers to buy top teams' youngsters for a low fee, but with heavy sell-on fees. Apparently the case for Maghoma, who was just brought in from Tottenham. For us, see Travis, JRC, Butterworth, Thompson, Hilton, or even someone like Hart, as recent, generally successful-looking, examples. (Considering how much I just wrote, you might as well just read the article Kamy posted haha...)

  12. It's high time we signed Ryan up to a proper contract instead of that insultingly short one we signed him up to last year. 4 years please. The longer we wait the more his wage demands for it are going to be.

  13. Bit of a difference there to compare Mahoney and Shearer I think, yes it was his boyhood club but Shearer was in his prime and moved for a world record fee to the side that had finished second in the premier league, and looked like it could go on and win things for the foreseeable future. Mahoney was a kid who had just been relegated to league one, on pittance, and moved to a top flight club on 14k a week as mentioned above. I don't blame any player, whether they are a fan or not for taking the route that Mahoney did.

  14. And How many were offered £14k/week to sign for Bournemouth? Mahony is a Rovers fan from a Rovers family when someone offers to make you a millionaire over the period of your contract unfortunately the fan in them gets put on the back burner

  16. I can't imagine JRC will be starting games anytime soon, no matter what Mowbray says. I think we'll start to see plenty of substitute cameo's from him though, with maybe a few starts towards the end of the season.

  17. Ince suffered from lots of poor decisions by himself. Poor choices of coaching staff like Ray Mathias or Archie Know or Nigel Winterburn. Poor signings like Grella, Andrews or Fowler. His attitude towards everything thinking he was a big cheese here. He wasnt. Fans never took to him. John Williams made a massive mistake in appoint him at the time we did.

  21. Twelve months ago, we were perfectly poised to have a proper shot at the playoffs. We didn't invest either sensibly or appropriately and pedictably went on one of our trademark dogshit runs. Fast forward 12months, Groundhog Day again - but even worse because we've had one win in seven and can hardly invest without repercussions of FFP sanctions - due to a certain person (who has a thread) tying ourselves in knots with utterly terrible recruitment. We knew back then the basics of what the squad needed - it didn't materialize. We know what is still needed - it absolutely won't materialize again. I call it massive failure - neglectful in fact. Some package it up as consolidation and other cliches like keeping powder dry etc. and are already writing off the season in the make-believe scenario that we will somehow do basic things right, with money we can't spend and have a better shot next season (When three teams who know how to get out of this league , come down with even bigger budgets than the last time they we'd us how it was done). Make no mistake, we will be wasteful again and spend something for the sake of spending, probably on someone who won't be "Up to speed" for a month. At best, we'll get a Jack of all trades, master of none individual (midfielder no doubt) who will do half a job somewhere because he's quiet and easy to manage. We will get the inevitable interview saying our derisory offers for experienced players were laughed off (not with such honesty of course) and how we tried with a number of deals that couldn't get over the line because teams don't want to lose good players when they are in with a chance of promotion...or fighting relegation...or wanting stability...or *insert pathetic excuse here * Oh to simply have a plan and the bollocks to go for it.

  23. We're not going Down. We're unlikely to go up, barring a spectacular run of form. So it's the perfect time to start playing promising academy players, like JRC, in not particularly important positions. We have nothing to lose by playing someone who is potentially 1st team quality on the right wing and everything to gain if he delivers. It's what we should have done with Chapman and Mahoney. Let's not fuck up thrice in the same position. Same goes for the likes of Buckley. We're in a relatively middling position, give these younglings a proper chance in the first team and potentially save (or even make..) a few million in transfer fees and wages and build the next generation of 1st teamers.

  24. Perhaps the plan is to upgrade Walton, release the Canadian, and use either Fisher or Hilton as Number two (leaving space for another u23 keeper)

  25. Whitehall isn't a CB, despite playing there recently. He most definitely sees himself as a midfielder. I wouldn't loan Buckley out either, I'd take the mythical £10m (with add ons if possible) and PMSL for the next 5 years... like Forest are doing with Brereton.

  26. Weren't we linked with that George Tanner kid from Man U earlier in the window? He has signed for Salford on loan for the rest of the season.

  27. Not going to pretend to be his best mate, but I know of Mahoney’s brother through friends. Both are Rovers fans. Connor is probably less so than his brother, but a friend of mine who does know them both well, said he left for the opportunity. The money helps, but Christ, nobody sane would’ve turned that down at the time. Could he have asked for a straight loan back (a la Jack Clarke to Leeds)? Maybe. But he is a Rovers fan, and didn’t just abandon the club.

  42. Was just about to post these two, I always like the early cup games from that period having two Rovers fans up front seemed pretty special to me. Remember away at Everton in the FA Cup in 2007 they played up top together, ran them ragged, both scored and we were 3-0 up at half time.

  43. Interesting stuff although i'm not keen on the 'everyone involved' in the signings i think there's been plenty of that here ! Can see a lot of sense in what they are doing down there though but just like the first team tactics Rovers has to decide which way it's going to go and stick to it. Burnley/Sheff U .. then get a group together like that and pragmatically physically fight your way up. Watford/Brentford -- Have a football style and stick to it, let somebody who knows what they are doing operate the recruitment and have a good head coach who can work that way. We are constantly caught in the middle it seems when really what they should be doing here is having their own Blackburn Rovers by Skill and hard Work identity. Using all the means they have to invest in players/youth to build a team for promotion. Mowbray himself has said that in the past and some ways we are on the road so why change. Promotion challenge first with the funds given and all this investment model, production line stuff second. Why oh why hold it back in the slightest....

  46. It wasn't. Your rose-tinted specs got the better of you. Genuinely though, I don't value your opinions, they aren't often linked to reality or facts and now you don't seem to be remotely aware of the opinions of others or facts (regardless of people pointing things out to you: whether that be who, where, when, why or how much) - so I think it is for the best that we leave it because I do feel that you must be on the wind up...again. So...transfers? Any hope of a left back?
