  1. ‘I knew the club wasn’t for me when I realised their big Derby was Bolton (!) and it just didn’t compare with Glasgow’ No pal it was because the PL was too much for you, canny Scott Brown has kept in his Scotland comfort zone.

  4. The book The Damned United and subsequent film were just brilliant. Martin Sheen absolutely nails the likeness of Clough in that.

  5. Shearer at the start here was absolutely incredible. You won’t see many better than that, incarnation of Shearer, ever. He was an absolute joy to watch, even if I was only a nipper at the time.

  6. I’m not usually the autocratic moderating type, but if anyone includes Barry Ferguson, you can expect to cop a ban.....

  7. Shearer is a gentleman. I messaged him on twitter recently asking if he would sign a shirt for me and he obliged immediately and was so kind.

  9. Problem with that is like me their budgets and outgoings would probably based on a fixed income. Even if it is significantly higher than mine. Any drop could be an issue on mortgages car payments etc.

  10. That's usually the way with books and movies ain't it. The more nuanced part that is.

  11. A life too short by Ronald reng ( about the German goal keeper Robert enke ) a post human autobiography of sorts

  12. He really was. He had 16 league goals by December of his first season with Rovers then did his knee. Luckily that one didn't slow him down, probably because he was still young. When he did come back in 1993 he went straight back to banging them in. I reckon that injury cost England a place at the 1994 World Cup. Without him England had to rely on a bunch of nearly men up front.

  13. I'll keep my pre-order on for now as the digital editions will always be available should there be a huge delay. Fingers crossed it won't be an issue though.

  14. Sports book - The Dark Trade - About the murky behind the scenes stuff etc following around some famous boxers. Football book - The Club that Jack Built - Not quite warts and all but an interesting account of Rovers rise under Jack. I like any autobiography of football and sports most colourful characters, dying breed. Most from the last 5 years on will only need do a blog that'll cover everything because they trumpet every modern boring stereotypical thing they do daily via social media !

  16. ‘Provided your Don’t Kiss Me’, biography of Brian Clough from the local Forest reporter who spent 20 years in close quarters with him. I just find the fella fascinating and it was a cracking read. ’Living on the volcano’, it follows football managers in their day to day. From Wenger at the top, down to League 2. Real insight to the madness of that profession.

  17. There probably wasn't a huge amount of difference in the money between the 2 jobs then. Actually you have given me an idea.... New thread incoming

  18. Yep, many will only remember Newcastle Shearer and post about ‘98, he just wasn’t the same player we had, as injuries began to catch up with him. Still a quality striker, but he became more of a target man/bruiser, he’d lost a lot of the pace that made him devastating here.

  19. Maybe age? Anyone under 35 won't remember him the same - which is frightening to me as I remember him as clear as day. Someone born in 1988 would have only been 8 when Shearer left.

  20. Well regarded by Leeds fans - 100 appearences for them in the top flight alongside his 123 for Liverpool. Average player in the top league I admit and well past his best for us but still. besides, he just had surgery on a brain tumor in November.

  21. He's a quality footballer Mulgrew but never struck me as a really good defender however like you say it's what's around you that can make the difference. Coming from Celtic to here at that point was probably a bit of a shock in terms of quality and ambition.

  22. World Cup ‘98 my Dad used to slag Dailly off every Scotland game, ‘bloody bad ‘un’ Few weeks later, ‘Guess who’ve we’ve just spent £5million+ on?’

  23. I still remember an old Championship Manager game from the mid 90s, his position was listed as Centre Half/Centre Midfield/Striker, which was most welcome as Rovers manager!

  24. There’s some great moorland up behind that massive house at the top of Bury Fold Lane. Can’t remember its name. Between there and Cadshaw Valley and Hanging Stones. Most Darreners won’t have heard of it, let alone walked there because it’s way beyond the tower. Beautiful countryside but I guess it’s rather isolated and would have been problematic getting the camera gear etc up there. A shame.

  25. His name is Eamon Rogers, he is the king of our land, his hair hangs over his shoulders, tied up with a blue and white band.

  27. Football, Rovers, decent back story - highly recommend watching it ?? Also good to see that even then our facilities were more modern than Turf Moor.

  28. There is a discussion on one of the Darwen Facebook sites where a guy commented that he was one of the mill workers in the programme and was ‘on set’ for a month. I asked him where both the moorland and town scenes were filmed as I knew they weren’t Darwen. The town was actually Saltaire, near Shipley and the moorland was nearby in Yorkshire.

  29. If you never saw Eamon Rogers play he was a David Dunn who could tackle. He could play anywhere apart from centre half and frequently did. Mainly in centre midfield but he played out wide some of the time and full back.on a few occasions. All the time looking a natural in whatever position. He had that priceless ability carry the ball from the half way line to the penalty box. He didn't take a backward step either. He missed his way and just allowed his career to fizzle out after a badly advised move to Charlton. Andy Mac fell out of love with football when he still had plenty left in the tank. He packed it in to go driving trams in Dublin allegedly !

  30. If it was players at their best regardless of their spell at Rovers then the task would be impossible...Cole, Yorke, Fowler, Sukur, Baggio, Djorkaeff, Batty to name but a few...

  31. It's kinda funny, do you go for objectively best 11 or personal favourite 11? Head knows Hendry goes in, but heart just wants Nelsen and Samba back together again...

  33. Friedel (USA) Salgado (Spain) Hendry (Scotland) Nelson (New Zealand) Le Saux (France) Emerton (Australia) Tugay (Turkey) Duff (Republic of Ireland) Villanueva (Chile) Shearer (England) Bellamy (Wales) Most is quite straightforward but it gets difficult in CM - hence the youtube sensation himself getting in. Le Saux sounds french so that will do. Either him or Bjornabe.

  34. Savage? ? Good player for us but all-time greatest DM? Even Nzonzi and Jermaine Jones were better players.

  35. I got married on Friday, luckily just before everything decided to close down! My wife's step dad decided to ask Rovers and Liverpool (wife is a big Liverpool fan) if they'd be able to get some players to sign a congratulations card for us. Amazingly, Rovers entertained the idea and have sent a card with a few signatures (unfortunately the same can't be said for Liverpool). I've worked out a few of the signatures, but I was wondering if anyone would be able to help out them at all?
