  1. I always think of Bellamy too when thinking of Speedie and his one season. Speedie was fantastic in that year, and was probably my first ever footballing "hero", but hell, Bellamy was incredible, and was probably the main reason we went from a bottom six top flight side to a top six side top flight side within a year..

  2. It has. But the football authorities continue to bang on about ‘sporting integrity’ It’s a load of bollocks, any chance of that has long gone whatever method they use. The top two divisions will re-start to ensure the cash keeps rolling in - which is a perfectly legitimate reason to get back on the pitch, considering what could happen to clubs if we don’t - but just stop with the pretence it’s for any other reason than cold hard cash.

  3. The food may have tasted nice but it’s how that food arrives at your plate that’s the problem. Beef slammed full of anti biotics, hormones for extra growth; chickens chemically washed because of the horrendous living conditions; E numbers and additives in almost everything. The taste will be amazing. The effects it can have on your body is a totally different thing. We should never, ever sacrifice our food standards for that of America’s.

  4. Mowbray has been the most staunchly supported manager we’ve had for a long time. Rarely been a murmur against him in 3 years at Ewood, and we’ve seen some horrendous runs of form. He’d have been hounded at many other Championship clubs. Ewood Park as a place that is ’Very fickle’, a ‘tough environment’ that ‘quickly turns’ is just not true in the slightest.

  7. Speedie was absolutely fantastic, we're comparing 2 of the best players in recent Rovers history here, but Bellamy brought the Shearer years back for me. You walked down to Ewood wondering how many he'd score or how many he'd put on a plate for Kuqi to miss, but he was on another level. Tremendous players, we've been blessed, they can't take away our memories chaps

  8. Speedie - a true Rovers cult hero, only here a short time but what an impact. Everything about him screamed 'winner', my type of player get stuck in first ask questions later.

  9. In my opinion, you have made 2 huge errors in understanding my points, either accidentally or purposely which are clouding your judgement. Number 1, you have misunderstood my suggestion. It is a simple rule, if leagues are completed, then promotions and relegations go ahead. Moving down the leagues, once you get to the point that a division CANNOT be completed, then at that point as a complete rule going downwards, there are no promotions/relegations. You cannot relegate and promote teams on incomplete seasons. I have repeatedly said that my suggestion, accepting that as a minimum the top 2 divisions are going to be completed, Premier League and promotion chasing Championship clubs will NOT be affected as you seem to have misunderstood. Promotions and relegations between those divisions CAN be allowed because both divisions will have completed the full set of fixtures, including play offs, therefore it is then as fair as it is going to be to promote and relegate 3 clubs between these as normal. It is unfair to promote and relegate teams based on an unfinished season, that is my point, and extrapolating results is not a fair way of doing so, it is not the best remaining way to do so, it would make a mockery of the integrity of the football league. This would be typically prevalent where the lowest complete league meets the highest incomplete league, and you throw inconsistency into the mix, replacing teams that have played 46 teams from one league with games who have played 30 odd games. Number 2, you have failed to grasp that there is NO 100% fair way in the current situation, and there will be winners and losers to all suggestions, so you cant sympathise and empathise with individual clubs and pander to them, you have to look at the overall picture. For every Coventry, there is a Peterborough, for every Wycombe, there is an Accrington Stanley, for every Charlton there is a Sunderland. Theres also a touch of personal bias mentioning Rovers but see point number 1 as to how we wont be affected anyway) All you can do is come up with the fairest way. Assuming that some divisions will be completed, how I have outlined in Point 1 is not perfect, no way is, but IMO the most consistent, fair and common sense approach to a very difficult situation. If they need to vote to determine if League 1 can be completed, then fine, and if it can, it still all falls under my proposal above.

  10. The Championship and L1 lost their integrity after the Bolton debacle IMV, especially L1 with a bunch of teams playing Bolton's youth squad at the start of the season compared to a still-awful-but-mostly-professional team afterwards.

  11. The agreement didnt account for such an extraordinary and unprecedented situation though. You can't just stick to that as if its a strict rule, if ever there was time for some flexibility... All I am saying is that now it is clear that some leagues will be finished, surely some common sense comes in. The integrity of the season is long gone, no method of conclusion is fair. But consistency is maybe all we can ask for. If you cant see the unfairness and the inconsistency of relegating 3 teams based on finishing a season behind closed doors, all games played at least, and then replacing them with 3 teams calculated on a formula who hadnt finished their season, then more fool you. If you also cant see how teams in the main will vote for what suits their clubs current League situation then you are more naive than you think, its the obvious flaw of all of these votes. It was clear that League 2 clubs couldnt afford to finish and they did well to just universally agree but in the top 3 leagues there is potential scope to finish. Who was the first team in the Championship to ask for the season to be scrapped? A Hull team dropping like a stone. Whereas Charlton are desperate to finish. Your mindset is, there is an agreement, it has to be honoured and balls to the extent of the pandemic and the uniqueness of the situation, and balls to being flexible, the FA's decision will be the correct one. Some consistency, common sense, flexibility and an acceptance that "sporting integrity" cannot be fully maintained regardless but as much as possible should be kept is what I ask. Not blindly accept that a rigid agreement made before a one off world wide pandemic justifies these bollocks formulaes that are being used.

  12. Completely agree with you on that. The reason American food tastes good is because it's smothered with additives which cause your brain to want more of it, as are their sodas which most restaurants provide unlimited free refills for. I would never advocate adopting American food standards over here, and I hope we never do.

  13. Absolutely. For me out of all of it, its the inconsistency that drives me crazy. As you touch on there is going to be unfairness regardless of the situation but promotion on PPG to relegate teams who have had all 46 games is the unfairest method of all. You cant be using formulaes to complete seasons for me. It is either safe to finish it or it isnt. You then have a clean break between completed divisions and divisions that have had to write the season off. So much can change in the final games as you mention, I know the Championship would probably finish regardless now but an example would have been that Charlton dropped into the bottom 3 I think for the first time on the last weekend of played football.

  14. I get why they feel they need to use that points per game method, but it massively against the spirit of a football league season. Club’s can charge towards promotion, play offs, relegation late in a season or vice versa can collapse in form. Yet, competing the season on the pitch in empty grounds also impacts this famous ‘sporting integrity’ as they are conditions different to what went before - I.e. the Bundesliga is showing that home advantage is now diminished etc. Either way is inherently unfair to me, but we are where we are.

  15. Just to pick out his part. Not sure TM is a good example to use when suggesting our fans are fickle. This is a manager that goes on huge losing runs and then some good winning runs. Fans of any club in the country would be calling for his sacking after the sort of runs we have suffered. Many would then turn to support him once he turns those around and then the team goes on to show some good form for an extended amount of time. Lets be honest, he would have been sacked elsewhere after some of the losing runs we have had.

  16. I disagree with your first paragraph and agree with your last. Professional footballers want to win whether there is a crowd or not. Football also needs fans in the ground for multiple reasons. Based on your summary Rovers should be a cert for a playoff spot though. They've been playing at a mostly empty Ewood all season. They are well schooled in playing in front of a sterile atmosphere and should thrive.

  17. Just finished rewatching Life on Mars on the IPlayer.I had forgotten what a great show it was, cant believe its been 15 years since it was on.John Simm and Phillip Glenister are excellent as Sam Tyler and Gene Hunt and the rest of the cast are good too.I'd definitely recommend it to anybody that missed it when it was shown on TV.

  19. Am I the only one who watched it today on Rovers YouTube channel, #Roversrewind? Never seen it since being there on the day and not having the stress of watching live made me revisit a few opinions I have held since. Definitely a penalty, Speedie beat Walsh with a turn and the arm came across him. Cowans was a lot more Tugay-esque than I remember. Atkins was like having two players; he was 23 then and a lot better than Travis at similar age IMO, he got past our forwards more in that game than LT has in his career. I don’t know why we convinced ourselves they were all over us: Mimms made one very pedestrian save all afternoon while Muggleton kept them in it with 4 crucial ones in the second half. The two goal line clearances were routine, either would’ve been a very scruffy goal had it gone in. I loved listening to Lennie Lawrence as the co-commentator, really good at explaining why things were happening. A bit surprising to hear Don McKay basically call Sellars a big-game choker in the preamble, not that he starred in the game to be fair to Don. Price was very ineffective on the other wing. There would’ve been four sendings off by today’s standards, and I for one prefer backpasses to the keeper to the endless sideways passing we have to endure today. It’s a cracking watch, don’t miss it.

  20. Which, again, is what I said. However, if L1 and the Championship end the season differently then there should be no movement of teams between the two. The integrity is lost.

  23. As a Brit living in America I have enjoyed reading the food tangent. I'm not going to comment on how it's produced as I have no idea. The only place I've heard of a chlorinated chicken is on here. America's food production system is based on quick and cheap so I wouldn't doubt that corners are cut. Tourists tend to want the American experience so go full blast on massive portions and unlimited coke. Buffet style places should be avoided at all costs. As well as "Chinese" restaurants. It's not Chinese food. I've travelled the length and breath of America. There is some very good food if you look for it. American BBQ is probably the only food style that they can call their own. It's very very good if you go to a local place. Different regions have different types. In any largish city you'll be able to get a host of foods from different countries. There are plenty of crap American foods, although I don't know if these are because I grew up on British food. Generic mustard - It's just vinegar with yellow food colouring added. There are loads of different varieties available though, Colemans included, so you don't have to suffer it. Chocolate/sweets - just doesn't taste right. Hershey's is awful. Mars isn't too bad. Supermarket bread. It's made to last, not to taste. I don't buy it. Go to a baker. Crisps - improving but still aren't UK quality. Beer - when I first got to the US the choices were Budweiser, Bud Light, Miller Lite, and maybe Guinness. That was pretty much it. To me it explains the explosion of American full hop IPA's that are brewed by every single craft brewery. Americans were used to ale with no flavour so went with too much as soon as it was available. They do like to put cheese on everything. It's hilarious.

  26. What you dont seem to appreciate is that I am talking specifically where 2 leagues meet where one is completed and one isnt. The reason that I used the word flexibility is because you keep reverting back to rules set in stone in the early 90s that simply cannot be prioritised within such a unique situation. In League 2, it was a unanimous decision because it is logistically and financially impossible as agreed by all clubs to complete the season. Its not as straightforward above that. I hardly think having an attitude of "decide amongst yourself" is showing great leadership. I was opposed to the restart at all on safety grounds and moral grounds but am looking past that now and accepting that some leagues are going to be completed. Its nothing to be excited about but its possibly the fairest way. But what I am clinging onto is that they should only complete the seasons to which the season can actually be completed. Clinging onto rules rigidly that simply do not account for such unprecedented events to try and justify a bizarre necessity to relegate and promote, even based on totally unfair formulaes makes absolutely zero sense and makes an absolute mockery of the supposed integrity and fairness of football in this country. I do think that allowing clubs to vote opens up a can of worms in terms of self interest but that is not my main expectation. I just cannot fathom why they are using this points per game shite. Whatever the leagues that can be completed, ie the Prem, Championship and if possible League 1, complete and award titles, promotions and relegations between those divisions. Beneath that, the divisions unfortunately CANNOT be completed so no promotions and relegations, including between the top division unable to be completed and the bottom division that is able to be completed.

  28. I think any rumour like this has to be taken with a huge pinch of salt, even before considering the current situation, its seemingly an agent trying to drum up interest. In terms of the player himself, he ticks a few boxes, a fast winger is something we desperately lack and hes free. But hes spent the peak years of his career playing very little football and hes incredibly frustrating and inconsistent. The type to score or assist and then do nothing at all for 7 or 8 games. One id swerve I think.

  29. You can certainly understand how so many of them end up obese when you combine the taste of the food, the portion sizes and the addictive elements clandestinely added to a lot of their food. The last time I went the prices were extremely reasonable as well, even in LA, compared to what you get over here for the same price. I had an American girlfriend a long time ago and whilst she didn't drink, so I never got her take on our alcohol, she did develop a bizarre affinity for our bread (and Coronation Street). I've always found American bread kind of gross as it generally tastes like it's been coated in sugar - it's the same with their baked beans. I'll go English on those items any day.

  32. yes I suffered no problems when I've been to America different occasions. I agree with D.E that the worst food I experience was Buffet restaurants. I enjoyed the Breakfast food and Evening meal. Most of the time you only need 2 proper meals a day cos portion sizes. Breakfast food was like a Full English and a couple of pancakes with syrup. Evening meals I enjoyed was proper restaurant food. Buffet food not so much.

  35. I've been to Florida, Connecticut and LA, and the only bad experience I had with food was a Chinese in Florida which was terrible. I enjoyed pretty much everything else, although there was a lot more sugar and salt than I was used to, and the portion sizes were insane across the board.

  36. Never had a bad meal in the States and I've been all over the country. Florida/Orlando is very different to most other places in States, it caters for mass tourism on a fast food basis, but is still very good quality in my experience. Neighbourhood restaurants in San Francisco are some of the best in the world, the place is a culinary delight if you avoid the tourists traps.

  39. Life on Mars was a brilliant series, We have had quite a bit of British/Irish crime/drama series added to our two streaming services in Aus over the last few months and obviously with lots of downtime we have been catching up. One in particular starring John Simm was White Dragon was very good (believe it was called Strangers, in the UK). Others that were decent The Dublin Murders (slow starting but worth sticking with) Prey (series 1 starring John Simm and series 2 Phillip Glenister) The Tunnel series 2 and 3 So/So White Lines (Netflix) - Produced by Alex PIna (Money Heist) Decent cast and a promising story line (mysterious death, drugs, Ibiza) but way too long could have easily been 6 episodes instead of 10 and loads of unnecessary sex scenes, (never thought i would ever say that, must be getting old :)) A couple of Australian shows that you may find on UK/USA netflix (or on the high seas) that are worth a watch Mr Inbetween (2 series) - comedy drama about a underworld hit man/nightclub bouncer Utopia - (4 series) cross between the office and yes minister about a government infra structure department. Lamb of God (4 episodes (dark crime drama, reminded me of The Wickerman (film) ) Secret City (2 Series) - Political espionage

  44. It was never going to last for ever, we weren’t a big enough club to compete with Oil money. But there was nothing stopping us being at the top for the rest of the 90s. It was 1995, not 2005. The likes of Zidane, Dugarry et al were available for prices (or less) than what we were spending on shite like Dailly, Davies and Ward 3/4 years later. So of course it was viable in the 90s, especially as pretty much every big signing we made between 1992 and 1994 was sold on for a profit.

  45. I dont think any player has made an impact in 1 season at a club like Speedie did at Rovers that season. Its a shame we had to let him go to Southampton to get Shearer,i wonder what a Shearer/Speedie forward partnership would have been like if they could have had time together.

  46. Bloody hell. I posted it to promote a bit of light hearted chat in this endless down period. I don’t give a shiny shite if they do a Jack Straw style stump speech from outside Marks & Spencer every other Saturday or we don’t hear from them ever again as long as they pay the bills. I’ve long stopped having any interest in them as owners or people, no idea why they are still here or what they get out of all this, but here we are. Just made me laugh that a certain poster now enjoys being the contrarian so much these days (whilst playing the ‘who, me?’ routine), he’ll come out with outlandish stuff like ‘most owners’ are just like Venky’s, which is plainly nonsense posted for a reaction.

  47. @Exiled in Toronto thanks for this thread. When the game was played I was working far upcountry miles from a TV. I got the score hours later from HO. I've seen highlights, mainly of the penalty incident, but that was it until now. I've just spent a thoroughly enjoyable time watching the full game and even though I knew the result it was great to see it all. Leicester had spells when they threatened, Mimms catching was superb apart from one that led to one of those goal line clearances. We had the better chances throughout, Newell gave a great display ably assisted by Speedie. A great all round team effort which I am so pleased to have now seen in full. I am a subscriber to the Rovers YouTube channel but didn't know about Rewind for some reason. I see lots of other great games are available to so I know how my next couple of lockdown days will be spent. Happy Days
