  1. Just watched the edited highlights of the 2013 1st Ashes Test from Trent Bridge. An absolutely brilliant match with lots of twists and turns throughout. Anderson getting 5 wickets in each innings and a young Ashton Agar scoring 98 at number 11 for the Aussies. England eventually and nervously winning by 14 runs. I’m loving these replays and can’t wait for the live action to start against the Windies.

  3. I still maintain that Test Match Special is the outstanding way to "watch" the cricket - the pictures are better. Usually I have the TV on Sky in the living room, but spend my day when in listening to TMS whilsy doing whatever I'm doing and then nip in to watch on TV if there is anything significant.

  4. I think the current England team has a chance to become as good to be honest. In Sancho, Sterling and Kane we've got 3 world class players, and the general techical standard of the squad is very high. Defence and keeper a bit dodgy though.

  5. I can see my Dad coming round to our to watch the games (distancing measures permitting) as he has a mobile phone that just does texts & calls, won't want to watch it on a laptop screen & won't have a clue how to screen share - even if I show him 1000 times. Best fill the fridge up then!!!

  6. I'm in the same boat as you Paul on this. I'm not particularly IT or social media orientated. I don't even know if as a season ticket holder I automatically have some sort of online account or not, I've never needed one - when I renew my Season ticket I nip down to the Club Shop to do it. When I want to buy some merchandise, I nip down to the Club Shop to get it. I've never watched a match on I Follow. My mate's son orders away tickets for the three of us. Said mates son was laughing at me at the weekend saying "You'd better not leave it until five to three before the first game." All of this will be no problem of course as long as the streaming actually works and I'm aware of the steps needed to set it up. I don't think the Club should underestimate though that a large percentage of the fan base might be technological dinosaurs like myself and will need very clear guidance on what to do. I have an active e-mail account and I don't seem to have received any texts or emails from the Club regarding this. All I saw was something on Sky Sports indicating that ST holders would be able to stream all the remaining games for free. (Which I think is exceptionally fair) My first thought was "how does that work; how do they know who's a ST holder or not?" The second was, ""What the hell do I do next?" Over to you Rovers!

  8. An empty ground is par for the course in a lot of Test playing nations unfortunately, so it won’t be too odd to see, especially for the West Indies players...

  9. I loved listening to TMS. There have been some absolutely fantastic one-liners over the years. One of my favourites was during an Ashes series when Steve Waugh got smashed in the box while fielding at short leg. After lengthy treatment, Johnners said "And Waugh has now gone down to third man to lick his wounds" to raucous laughter from the rest of the commentary box.

  14. I just finished a binge-watch of Ozark. Pleased with the ending to S3 and hope that Marty and Helen both buy a ticket if more Seasons are made. Actually I hope it runs until Darlene is elected President of the US, quite feasible too. Also, Vikings is done where the binge-watch highlighted the repetitive nature of the storylines. It was worth the watch though with brilliant scenery and battle scenes.

  16. He was interviewed about that on 'Quickly Kevin Will He Score?' (an excellent 90s football podcast) a few months ago. Apparently, there was an agreement with the England squad that if anyone scored a Golden Goal, the whole team would have run straight into the tunnel without celebrating the goal. Amazing to think how different football folklore could be based on such tiny margins.

  18. I'm about 3/4 the way through this. While of course one has to have a huge amount of sympathy for him at his career getting cut short like that, I think Jansen is very lucky that Rovers stuck by him, because simply by getting on that scooter he was in breach of explicit written instructions from the club. The book also confirms what a pampered existence top players have.

  19. With respect to guidance coming from the club about ST refunds etc, we need to remember that we are not a normal club. Steve Waggott will never announce anything without approval from Pune. If Suhail is not currently available then communication with Pune could be non existent. Rovers' execs are effectively puppets. The puppet masters don't have a clue what's going on and have no interest either. It's not surprising we are always behind the curve.

  20. "The bowler's Holding the batsman's Willey" was a gem from TMS - John Arlott ?? So pleased cricket is returning to the free-to-air Beeb. Hope it becomes permanent. I don't pay to watch any sport on TV and never will.

  27. I don't think it is that difficult. Once the league and Sky have decided what is happening, or should i say once Sky have told the league what is happening, then it should be reasonably straight forward to sort something out. I don't see why you need to analyse purchasing histories of fans. If you have a season ticket, or half season ticket, or had bought tickets for the 4 remaining games, then you should be entitled to a refund if the club isn't allowing you access to watch the games when they happen. In terms of contacting everyone I'm sure the club will have either an email or postal address for every season ticket holder and can send a standard uniform email out to them once approved with a few clicks on a computer. In terms of someone in the ticket office I don't think they are doing anything at this moment in time, same applies to most non footballing staff at the club. As I understand it the place went into lockdown in late March and hasn't really opened since. Other than for online shopping. I think if you try ringing them now you won't get through to anyone because they are all at home on furlough. As Derby have shown a simple 5 point scheme offering an option for everyone can be rolled out. More than enough there to satisfy the vast majority of people. Clearly a different option to suit every individual's preferences isnt realistic but it should more or less follow the route of a) donation to club b) pro rata refund c) reduction on future purchases e.g. discount on next season (this option needs to be weighted to encourage as many as possible to renew rather than accept a cash refund). I don't think the club is really alive to the longer term implications of getting this wrong or leaving it too long. They need to be getting people tied down to new season tickets quickly and i suspect the only way they are going to do that with some people is by offering an incentive or discount. If that isn't done then sales will plummet and then we'll spend the next few years blaming Covid and feeling sorry for ourselves whilst other clubs recover quickly and retain supporters.

  28. You mean like Graham LeSaux ? We saw him through a career threatening injury. Paid him for what must have been about 12 months without him kicking a ball. Then as soon as he was fit again he wanted to leave. Shit house of a man.

  30. The multi-Season ticket household is a good point. The family of 4 all with STs are going to be getting a much poorer deal than the household with one ST holder.

  31. Not for everyone it isnt. Many dont have an interest in behind closed doors football which is totally understandable. There is also the limited value of say a number of people within the same household all getting an ifollow link, that will be fairly common. I think the club (and every other club) needs to offer the option of a refund like I think Derby have done, that wouldnt be the best choice for the club in terms of cash flow at this time but it could potentially save a few supporters in the long run so will be worth it. I do also think that it isnt particularly difficult to send out a mass email and a letter to season ticket holders (they already send regular emails to season ticket holders) explaining from the club that they will hear in due course rather than just copying and pasting the EFL statements spiel word for word. I am also not bothered about it but can see that quite a few are and its about keeping your supporters in the loop.

  33. I had totally forgotten that Darren Anderton smacked one against the post in extra time as well - that was actually even closer than Gazza's miss. Also, Spain had a perfectly good goal chalked off against us in the quarter final that would have sent us packing too. Germany also had a 'golden goal' disallowed in the semi final for a push but that one did look the right decision. Even though I knew the outcome, I still got nervous when we were taking those penalties!!

  34. That Gazza miss ranks alongside the Pedersen header at Old Trafford in the semi final of the cup, 2 incidents that play over in your mind time and time again.... Both looked easier to score and I'm sure if the players had the chance again the outcomes would have been very different.

  35. I’ll be honest, I’m in my thirties and I have absolutely no idea how to use I follow either. What I do imagine is that the club will ultimately have a second phase of the plan with an email containing instructions with how to access the match streams. Either way, I won’t have anywhere near the same enthusiasm for behind closed doors as being in the ground on match day.

  37. Lot of assumptions there, Joe. How do you know we’ll be given a suite of options to choose from? No point ‘having a rant’ either way until we know where we stand. But what I would say is the club have said literally nothing since March outside copying and pasting EFL press releases - just a holding statement/email saying ‘we’ll be in touch with our loyal fans’ doesn’t seem too onerous for a club with PR/social media teams, surely?

  41. Cricket has become my favourite TV sport now. I am not really interested in watching footy anymore unless it’s Rovers and I would have already cancelled my Sky Sports subscription if cricket was not on it. I also subscribe to BT Sports just when the Big Bash league is on in Oz. A different type of commentary, but again with very experienced ex-cricketers who know their stuff, and plenty of banter.

  44. You are not alone in thinking this way. At least you've received an email from the club. I haven't. Despite having a ST for over 40 years. So, as I understand it, as a ST holder I have already paid roughly £14 per game for these last 4 matches being shown on iFollow. But non-ST holders are only being charged £10 per game. Would it not make sense for me to demand a refund for these last 4 games, and then pay only £10 for each game individually? What am I not understanding here?

  45. Well not at all. We have Armstrong, Lenihan, Travis, Nyambe, Buckley, Rothwell. Plus good young prospects coming through from under 18's. Maglorie needs to develop for us. We all know what happened with the goalkeeper situation last summer regarding Raya's replacement. We need an experience keeper plus a number 2 keeper, 1 first team centre back and left back, back up centre back, 1 right midfielder. Back up left back.

  47. I suspect that the priority of any transfer window will have shifted from development and evolution to a conserve and make do approach considering the current economic climate. I suspect that we may be open to selling one or two to claw some of the deficit back but I can only see Premier League clubs being in a position to spend, mainly the top ones and I dont think that any of our assets, an injured Dack, Lenihan, Nyambe, Armstrong or Travis would be on the immediate radars of Premier League clubs. I suspect that we will plug the gaps left by Adarabioyo and Walton with cheap freebies, perhaps Sunderlands keeper or players of that ilk, Mowbray will be typically considerate with new deals, with dross like Bell, Leutwiler and Samuel kept to keep the numbers up, and positions that would have been necessitys to improve, notably left back and out wide will become luxuries that we cannot afford.

  49. I have listened to most of the "price of football" podcasts which explains lots of the financials of football. The one or two seasons in the Premier League "and all its riches" does come across as a bit of an urban myth. It seems as soon as you get your Premier League cash, everybody is knocking at your door for bonuses, higher wages, infrastructure improvements, player purchase clauses costs and a whole host of things. It's a broken model I'm afraid. * That's also with the hope that owners who have blown £10's - £100 million dont want any of their cash back!!
