  1. I think I have said this before, but it's not impossible that our defence for the first game of next season could be - Nyambe, Lenihan, Mulgrew, Williams. The exact same back 4 that started his first game in charge over three years ago. The defence will never be sorted under Mowbray, I accepted it a while ago.

  2. What gets me is the say what you like about the start of their tenure, at least they have hung around and paid the bills. Without going into a huge rant on each point there are more holes in this than a Swiss cheese. 1) For starters when does later behaviour/performance negate crimes? You don't see in court the defence yep them murdered them but you should see all the humanitarian work they have done since. And it doesn't work that way in the real world. If I bumped off a relative you wouldn't give a toss about my charity work. 2) Both analogies however are flawed as it's only because of Venkys that we need them to keep us financially afloat. Not sure how this has been forgotten or us overlooked. Surely it is a reminder of their crimes rather than a positive, but that doesn't seem to be the case. 3) There's also the overlooked issue of why they keep us afloat. Imo it's because to sell or admin reveals too many dark secrets. It's not out of the kindness of their hearts. No one praises kidnappers or hostage people for keeping their captives alive or think they are good eggs because of it. 4) The argument falls down massively because we are still a circus and run badly. The manager is overseen by his mate, budgets aren't set at appropriate times, managers come from a third rate agency and results don't seem to matter too much. Even magically forgetting points 1 to 3 it's still a farce and no way to run a club. Not sure why this isn't obvious to most Rovers fans but that clearly isn't the outlook. No idea why not either.

  3. Just sign the Charlton keeper ffs. From.the stats above he was one of the best keepers in the division last season. Charlton need the dosh and he will want to stay in the CH. No brainer - get it done! Then we can move onto CB and LB. We will dally as usual and he will go elsewhere...you just know it.

  4. I'd rather he played next to Berg and formed a solid defensive foundation in defence with some aerial prowess, something we've been lacking in our last 3 seasons in the champnship and which we haven't properly fixed in 7 transfer windows. Its difficult enough with our probably limited budget trying to get players to strengthen our team. To also find ones with unnecessary attributes is even more difficult. Here is a damning statistic. We have known about these defensive issues for a while, and yet at the end of last season whilst we tried to convince ourselves we had a realist I've chance of the play offs we failed to keep a clean sheet in our last 11 games, conceding 2 or more in 8 of those games. Only Hull didn't keep a clean sheet in that period. This isn't a new manager coming into a club. This is a guy who has been here over 3 years, and yet our defending is an utter shambles. Yet he thinks the problem is we aren't passing the ball out of defence enough.

  6. I know it's just data but Jesus, it's becoming increasingly obvious that Phillips is a no-brainer at the 800k - 1 mill fee being mentioned. Even in this climate. Just. Fucking. Sign him. Didn't we just free up about probably 30-40k per week, so 1.5 mill to 2 mill in wages for this upcoming year? That's before Downing potentially doesn't re-sign, which would be about another million. And it isn't counting whatever we were paying Brighton and City for the loanees.

  8. I'd also like to see Wharton featuring for us next year. I'm not sure what he's done wrong since (imo) impressing when Coyle was here and it would in my view be lunacy to sign this lad from Stoke or Wharton's CB partner from Northampton without giving Wharton the chance first. So that's what we'll probably do......

  9. This the Sheffield Wednesday who we are supposed to be using as an example of how not to operate these days yet are doing decent business as we speak. I find it amazing that we are not raiding Wigan for a couple of their assets. They are desperate for cash and to reduce wages.

  10. If Stoke have 6 centre backs already yet conceded 5 more goals and are happy to let Souttar leave, and at 21 years old, is he going to be of the calibre and experience to be able to get us into the play offs? Not a question I can answer but seems a little bit of a jump. That being said, its come from a really dodgy source so guessing that there is no truth in it.

  12. I'm also a little amazed at the general flow of the comments here. Although, almost BECAUSE I expect people to have short memories and usually go off the very most recent performances. After lockdown, he was mostly bobbins, but then in the last 2 or 3 games it all started to click like in his hot patch at the tail end of last season. THAT Rothwell could be an absolute menace for us. The one we get most of the time isn't worth any more than the odd cameo to shake things up with his ability to carry the ball. It could really transform us if he hit hot streaks more often. Another player who used to only have hot patches, though probably more of them or more sustained than JR, is Arma. Once he clicked consistently from January, he became easily our best weapon. That's why I'm happy to persevere with using him for another season, although he is a few years older than Arma. If we haven't seen a marked improvement to consistency by the end of the season it will likely be time to bid farewell, although on a cheap wage he might still be worth his cameos potentially. One worry I have with Rothwell's best patches is they both seem to have come in the 'dead rubber' phase of our seasons. This suggests one of two things. Either the opposition were slacking off a little bit and this gave him the edge and space he needed to shine. Or, and this is the one I suspect was mostly at play, pressure does something to him most of the time. It seems an odd thing to say with him, because he doesn't look like he lacks confidence. He is always willing to run at defences, always. But it could be hampering his decision-making as he feels the need to impress, or takes longer to think as he tries to figure the best option, doesn't strike the ball as cleanly as he isn't letting his muscle memory lead enough, etc. Those last games of the last two seasons, he has played like the shackles were off. And he's actually capable of some sublime touches and so on when that happens. He's a bit of an engima. One who has yet to strike the right balance consistently between under-thinking and over-thinking things, I reckon. Like bigdog said, he hasn't been helped by the manager at times in terms of playing him for a long streak when he clearly wasn't in form, and not playing him for a long streak when he clearly was in form. I'm not sure the tactics and comments from the manager suit him either, as others have said, but ultimately it's still on Joe to come out and deliver the goods.

  13. It really is silly season if people have the time and the motivation to find old articles about League 1 midfielders and modify the picture to make out as if we are signing them.

  14. The thing is though, Mowbray had claimed full responsibility on transfers so the conspiracy implies that he is an outright liar. It also requires Venkys to have put this rule in place which would require them to a vested interest in what is going on at the club which they clearly dont and a basic knowledge of football to specifically only fund certain positions. Mowbray has had similar problems at former clubs, he left Coventry after admitting failure to sign a centre back that was needed. His West Brom job became untenable because it was built on flimsy foundations. When Venkys came in their main early signing was Scott Dann who obviously was a defender. We had Grant Hanley coming through who obviously established himself at Championship level as a very competent CB and there was no need to replace him at that time. We also then signed Duffy once Dann went, again for a (smaller) fee who established himself alongside Hanley and that was one area which was fine. When we eventually sold them both, that was during a 2 year period (between being in embargo and relegation) in which every player of any value was sold off and there was no budget to replace them. When we were relegated Lenihan (academy graduate) and Mulgrew (one of the higher profile frees Coyle brought in) were more than capable in League 1 so again that wasnt an area that Mowbray concentrated on. I think it is more circumstantial and it seems farfetched that Venkys have either the knowledge or interest to specifically only spend in certain positions. You might call people pointing out the lack of defensive reinforcements as the "Mowbray out mob" but hes made these same mistakes at previous clubs. It seems like a case of removing any blame.

  15. It’s like we now have the owners we have because of the mistakes, arrogance and general uselessness of the previous owners, and we need to pull together to make the best of it. Except the current owners are still the previous owners! As a result there is no cathartic rebuilding, no Phoenix from the flames, no new dawn, no fresh start. At a club level, and ignoring the turnover of players, it’s like a predator guarding the carcass of it’s erstwhile prey. Fans I speak to who play the “Venkys are keeping us afloat” card are not only stating the bleeding obvious and ignoring all of the reasons why in their pious faux-gratitude but are clinging to the “badly advised” rhetoric to pretend (as much to themselves as anyone else) that we are under some kind of new regime who pay the bills (aka add to the debt) and not the one that got us here.

  21. So this mon reckons that there is a meeting next week between Mowbray and the owners, yet a week before that meeting he knows what the outcome of the discussion will be. Impressive journalism. He can tell Mowbray the outcome and save him the time of meeting the owners.

  26. I'm very much anti-Mowbray; he's taken us as far as he can and his level is League One in my opinion. You do make a very valid point though, given how Venkys operate, that he'll almost certainly be being told who he can and can't spend money on. Perhaps not specifically but the first two questions will be "which agency?" and "what position?". It'll all likely be run though that clown they've put in charge over here, I forget his name. So the sad reality is that whilst Venkys are here we're stuck with Mowbray, or an equivalent who is prepared to operate in this ridiculous system.

  27. That is almost half a side a way - scary and, IMO, how little we've progressed in three and a half years under Mowbray. Slow build, evolution, possession football - IMO, it's all cr@p and excuses and it keeps Mowbray in his well paid job!

  30. Why? What warrants Wharton starting immediately from next season? If we'd signed someone who wasn't one of our youth players from a League Two team to be a starter I imagine there'd be uproar... He's shown nothing to suggest he is capable at this level

  35. The Mowbray and honesty comment was tongue in cheek really, of course I know he would. Regarding Venkys, I am their biggest critic. But implying that they put specific demands on our manager spending money on attacking players just seems a little elaborated, and more invested and interested than they clearly are. Even if its via their stooge. Especially when defensive woes with Mowbray are a regular problem. Not sure about that, if theres any truth in it. A 21 year old whose experience has come from a handful of games in Scotland and a season and a half in League 1. Also notably he is apparently very slow. Think we need someone for the here and now.

  38. Would this guy be an upgrade on Wharton? Or any of the academy lads that are on the fringes?
    2 points
  39. Yep. I won't criticise managers too much for their transfer dealings because it is very apparent they have a small pool from which to work in + constraints to deal with. We have a favoured agency that's for sure. Then you have the admission from other chairmen that Rovers are incredibly frustrating to deal with.

  40. That would be the historical precedent that none of Mowbray's teams have been able to not concede goals. Mowbray's historical tendency to only sign midfielders. Mowbray's historical tendency to play players out of position. Mowbray can't set up a team to defend across a season. Yes that makes it Mowbray's fault. Mowbray has complete control over football. He gets to sign the players he wants, within budget. The season opener could see 7 Academy products starting, with 3 making their debuts. I'll be slightly more nervous than I normally am about season opener, which we normally lose.

  41. How many have we in our squad that are more comfortable right side of a front 3 ? How many times does it actually work ? We collect wide forward for fun yet this guy can't mould at least one of them into a regular success.

  43. At this point I’d rather just know for sure if we are skint so I can lower my expectations. I really think we are three signings and two loans away from being a top side in this league, baring no sales. But we have been here before, a lot, teetering on the brink. If we are skint, and have to rely on the academy then that’s fine, I’ll support that as its the only other alternative route to going for it. If that’s the case then Mowbray oot, and Johnson in.
