  1. Its a terrible result. We had him from being a kid, brought him through to 1st choice and then sold him for £3m, which we squandered. We certainly didn't bring any long-term benefit to the club. Meanwhile Brentford have had him for one year only, will make 4 times as much as we will and use the money to strengthen. We are amateurs at this game---mugs in charge.

  2. And whilst I feel like ranting. What is wrong with the culture around our team. Your new goalkeeper, only just come to the club, makes a fantastic save. Not one player in the defence, patted him on the back or showed any kind of interest. You can see Kaminski look around expecting some sort of reaction from our defence. I think he even semi-reaches a glove out looking for an acknowledgement. What sort of character do we have on the pitch?

  3. Watching Kaminski yesterday gave me a real taste of what it’s like to get players at their peak in terms of age and development. It wasn’t a world class performance but he was in complete control in terms of decision making etc. He looked assured. He didn’t have the air of a young player who may be erratic or an old player who might not last the season as their bodies begin to fail... It’s been a long time since we got players who aren’t either developing or at the end of their careers. This is due to cost, in particular in the domestic market. So my hope is that we go out to Europe for a Cb and Lb this week. Go and find assured players aged 25-29 to slot in amongst the young players.

  4. You’re spot on mate. New keeper in a new country, making his debut. Needs support and encouragement and not one pat on the back for a better save than that clown Walton made all last season. Pathetic response from teammates. Indicative of the gutless players we have. Maybe he shouts a little too much at them and they don’t like it. Like I said pathetic.

  5. Look back at the thread a year ago. Plenty saying it was a really dumb move and predicting exactly what seems to be happening. I was one of them. So let's not rewrite the history of this MB!

  7. This was one of Mowbray's best interview. He was honest and progressive. He really sounded like the guy to take the club forward. For those who don't want to watch, the stand out bit for me was " Defenders? I've got no defence. We lost 65 goals, 67 goals. It is ridiculous. New defenders are coming and the players who have done the job in the team this year know they are coming. Why? Because they have shown that they can't do the job. In this league they haven't been able to do it." A frank but correct assessment of a struggling defence made up of Williams, Bell, Bennett, Lenihan, Mulgrew and co. Soon after though Mowbray was talking a different tune. In June, https://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/sport/17738118.rovers-boss-tony-mowbray-wants-strengthen-across-board/ , he said, "I did talk about the defenders towards the end of the season and when you look back we did concede too many goals. But there are reasons for that but I’m not sitting here worrying about that any more than other positions." What caused the change of heart? Hard to say, maybe some of the senior players didn't like his frank assessment? Reviewing the 2019 summer transfer window, the defence was changed in the following way. In : Walton (Loan) , Cunnningham (Loan) , Tosin (Loan) Out : Raya (3 mill Brentford) , Mulgrew (Loan to Wigan) , Hart (Loan to Shrewsbury) , Downing (Free to Porstmouth) , Wharton (Loan) , Rodwell (Released) A lot of departures, including academy product David Raya and fan favourite, but aging, Charile Mulgrew (behind the scenes trouble). However, no permanent transfer was made. The loan signings were a mixed bunch. Tosin was brilliant, Cunningham suffered a long term injury and Walton being poor. Bottom line the defence did improve, conceding 6 fewer goals. However, the loan signings were a short term solution to a long term problem. Now so far in the, albeit COVID-19 affected, 2020 transfer window we have seen the following transfers In : Kaminski (500 k) Out : Tosin ( End of Loan), Walton (End of Loan) , Hart (Released) , Leutwiler (Released) With the departures of the loanees and the release of Leutwiler, the club had no senior goalkeepers on the book. Quite rightly Kaminski, showing the first signs of our fledgling European network, was brought in and looked tidy in his first game. However, the defence is threadbare. A ramshackle combination of academy products not ready for full game time and the same players that two seasons ago Mowbray said "Because they have shown that they can't do the job. In this league they haven't been able to do it." He was right then and right now. Williams, Bell, Bennett and co are not good enough. It is a massive failure of senior management to be playing the same fucking defence that two years ago they deemed to be not up for the job. There is no excuse for it.

  9. Reading through the posts in this match thread, they could be attributed to the majority of away games and performances over the past 4 or 5 years. It's just more of the same: score twice but still conspire to lose. You build from the back Tony.

  10. This will not go down well ! ...however, I’ve just listened to Paul Cook for 5 minutes on Sky ( before Ipswich / Wigan game )....deep breath.......I heard more football sense, more passion , more “ I know a player when I see one “ , more talk of pride in playing for football club than I’ve ever heard from Mowbray . Just look at his signings over the past couple of seasons, what he paid for them how they performed and the money they would have gone for had it not been administration...no fault of his I know this will be a dreadful post to many but.....he’s available and Mowbray’s here.....you do the thinking on that one

  11. It's all too nice. Was the same under Gary Bowyer and other managers. Come away from games thinking they haven't played badly but concede 2 and 3 yet always look like scoring. You have to do whatever it takes to get points, playing nice football and getting beat counts for Jack sh*t. Foul high up the pitch, take a yellow card, sometimes take a red if it's late in the game. There's still after almost 10 years of Champ football no commitment to a particular style of play, it's just, get some decent players in, wander out in to the pitch and see what happens. The only real style of play I can recall from Mowbray is when we were knocking long balls to Graham with Dack picking up 2nds. Worked really well to be fair, not the prettiest but it was a plan, then he mucked that up by trying this false 9 nonsense. Been saying for 3 years now, I quite like the fella but I've never known a manager make football so much more hard work than it needs to be. He likes the sound of his own voice way too much. Just shut up talking for once and sign some decent defenders man. Its a waste of good attacking talent.

  12. Really encouraged with our performance yesterday, and the introduction of Dolan and Rothwell allowed us to watch some very exciting football. Our 'problem' was we believed we could win and committed too many players forward, particularly the full backs. Normally TM would be lambasted for 'not going for it', he simply cannot do anything right for some supporters. But, if this is the quality of football we are going to be served up then I think we will be in for an enjoyable and exciting season.

  13. This Word Wide network just wont work with this dinosaur of a manager ... it’s a waste of resources ... He will go by his list of contacts .. Noticed he comes out with a cup of coffee and once sat on his seat hardly gets up .... getting worse by each match .... just His whole body language comes across as am tired ....

  14. It's the first match of the season and we should have beaten a team that cost many times more to put together than ours, and one of the favourites to clinch promotion. Most posters thought we'd get torn apart and lose heavily, but, IMO we controlled the majority of the game and should have scored 4 or 5. Yes, I agree that we need a new LB and CB, but, I will take that football I watched yesterday because we looked good.

  15. It is not as simple as that! I think Mowbray hung him out to dry on a number of occasions and, additionally, I think Raya, unsurprisingly, had very little respect for Benson our goalie coach and that is based upon what I saw with my own eyes. No wonder, IMO, Raya wanted out.

  16. Totally agree. Arteta has been a revelation at Arsenal and totally transformed them in just 9 months - no evolution and slow build with Arteta!!! IMO, just underlines why the dinosaurian Mowbray (and his staff) needs replacing with a dynamic, hungry and inventive young manager. I don't think we are going anywhere with Mowbray and the sooner the penny drops with our owners and the happy clappers then the better.

  18. That's really really bad. Where's this so called team spirit we keep hearing about!? To be fair though, they've probably forgotten what to do in that situation, it's 18 mths since we last had a goalkeeper pull off a decent save!

  21. Your highlighted comment is the most pertinent of all in the Raya debate and kind of sums up Mowbrays sometimes ad hoc approach. Raya had mistakes in him for sure but to sign a replacement (who wasn't in the frame when Raya was sold) who was probably worse is poor on Mowbrays part.

  22. Listened to this whilst running - great episode, thank you. my rovers support resonates a lot with Matt’s. I too wanted the 93-94 flowers multicoloured and jewelled gk top but was disappointed for it to be sold out. Therefore, my first rovers shirt was the equivalent yellow gk top which, although well worn, was never quite the same. Thankfully, I fulfilled a dream in the mid 2000s and got the shirt I always craved from classic football shirts in their early years. It now sits pride of place in my collection. Thank you also for the episode with Andy Bayes discussing MND and Len Johnrose. It was very well done and informative to those who do not know a lot about it. My dad died in December after a 2 year battle with MND which robbed us of a great man and deprived my children of ever really knowing their grandad. My old man used to referee Sunday league so that he could buy us tickets to head up the M6 from Stafford to Ewood on a monthly basis. An old gooner, he fully embraced my support for Rovers and had a lot of time for the club and it’s people pre Venkys. He always thought rovers a great family club. Since he was diagnosed, as a family we have raised around 20k for the Motor Neurone Disease association. It is great that the BBC continues to raise the profile of MND and those who suffer from what is one of the most cruellest of illnesses. We shall continue to fundraise so that hopefully a cure will be found one day. Keep fighting Len.

  24. Mowbray dropped Raya for Leutweiller, for a while. Raya is going to Arsenal, Leutweiller is playing at Fleetwood.

  27. Back in late 1984 aged 13, I was an avid reader of Roy Of The Rovers. At that time, I did a paper round six mornings a week, getting up at 6.30am and earning the princely sum of £2.50 per week. Therefore, I was very interested in the below message printed on the letters page. I thought for a bit about some Rovers trivia which might be sufficiently interesting to get published so I could more than double my meagre weekly wage. I sent a letter off and waited... Imagine my surprise when my letter was duly published in January 1985. I hot footed it down to the Post Office and cashed my postal order that very day.

  29. It’s so frustrating that we are only 2 decent signings away from a top 6 team ... I genuinely think Ayala and Cunningham would have got us there

  30. I am not excusing our awful defenders. But by playing the high press the way we do, does not give them any cover from midfield.

  31. I don't even get the debate on here regards Aynsley Pears. It's not debatable as to whether he is better than Fisher. He is. Miles ahead of him. He is better with his reflex saves, his handling is better and his diving especially at close range is better. £200,000-£300,000 isn't a lot of money for a talented 22 year old keeper who has experience at this level. What do people on here expect from a second keeper? Do people want to go into the season knowing that if Kaminski gets injured we will have to play with Fisher as No.1 until January with Jordan Eastham as backup. Disagree with a lot of what Mowbray has done this summer regards transfers. But this is not a bad option.

  32. I believe he's stewing over it as Rovers have lost their appeel. Chances are it'll get canned.

  33. If you want Cook anywhere near this club you were dropped on your head as a child, more than once. Absolute cretin.
    4 points
  34. Why wouldn't they? Any manager here gets to practically run the club.Mowbray has been backed with cash and hasn't been forced to sell a single player. Offer enough money and a lot of managers would come here.

  35. If he was dropped regularly, I'd be interested to know how he still managed to rack up thirty-odd starts whilst at the same time missing plenty of games through injury.

  36. Once again. also after Mowbray publicly and regularly shamed him as being responsible for the problems of the whole defence. He didn't public castigate anyone else as I recall.

  37. I've just watched a full match replay of yesterday's game on iFollow. I had noticed this facility after the Doncaster game. Great being able to pause and playback at leisure. It emphasised how bloody awful the Ref was especially in the first half when every dive by Bournemouth was awarded a freekick to the ridiculous extent that our Captain was given a team warning. I saw it live yesterday but picked up on a lot more detail on 2nd viewing. Apparently TM sits down when he's happy with things, I suppose that includes when he was giving the 4th official both barrels in the 1st half. After Dolans failed step-over Bournemouth were put on an immediate counter-attack at speed with a numerical advantage and scored because of that. But blaming Dolan for the goal would be a bit like blaming Brereton for their 2nd. Not on. We actually played quite well and no one had a stinker, not even Bell. How our smaller units cope against a more robust side, like Wycombe next week, will be interesting. Our shooting still leaves a lot to be desired. Armstrong, Johnson, Dolan, and Evans all missed good chances. We only had 2 shots on target and Johnson's goal showed the value of that.

  38. To be fair tho he had massive potential we developed him sold him for 3 million and Brentford only had him one season and joining Arsenal for 13 million.I don't think anyone can say that is good business by us

  39. You're literally rewriting history there. Plenty on here were bothered by the move at the time.

  40. Reacted when none of our players went to him when he was down after a collision/kick - wtf

  41. Christ still going on about Raya. He would sell for more now because he played for a team within a whisker of the prem. Playing for an average team pottering around mid table behind a shite defence we got a fair price. Sorry but he is a million miles away, still, from being a solid keeper in the prem.

  42. I'm not looking for son in law material I just want someone who's a winner and who will get us out of this division whilst we've still got a club left.

  43. ?? Tony at it again....old pals act. Contracts given out like confetti whilst the club goes to the dogs
    3 points
  44. You are wrong. Nyambe was criticised and dropped regularly in favour of Bennett. It is why I suspect he'll run his contract down and walk.
    3 points
  45. I’m probably classed as being on the more negative side of things (which is fair, I am what I am), but the one thing that pleases me is that we have combative midfielders that aren’t afraid to put a foot in nowadays. Been a long time since that was the case really!
    3 points
  46. So we ignore the fact that Arsenal are apparently prepared to pay much more for him, console ourselves that we got a good deal and happily sit back as Brentford get more than us for doing less? Moreover, this was eminently predictable but we went ahead anyway without having a permanent replacement!
    3 points
  47. Lets hope this particular link bears fruit. Every club needs a strong core of players. We've been stalking him for a while. Hopefully we don't get pipped by another club. My only concern is that Pear drops the ball a lot.
    3 points
  48. Corry Evans does that job well, he’s better than Johnson without a doubt
    3 points
  49. That is Tony in a nutshell. And Jayson is on the bench for Fleetwood. Tony should be sacked for that decision. Ridiculous.
    3 points
  50. The people that weren’t bothered were either daft or resigned to justifying bitterness as means of acceptance. If Kaminski is as good as Raya then I’ll be more than happy. We wouldn’t even be in the Championship without Spanish Dave.
