  1. It’s interesting comparing him to Dolan. Dolan is a real talent and has exploded onto the scene. But you can see the difference between a promising youngster and a once in a generation talent. Elliott’s vision, decision making and composure is remarkable. To have that at 17 is frightening. Very fortunate to have him. Let’s enjoy it.

  2. One of the few joys of living on my own is NEVER having to watch mush like this. And before anyone asks, "If you've never watched a programme like this, how do you know it'll be mush?", the answer is, "Trust me; I just know!" In the same way I just know Burnleh'll never be Lancashire's Most Historic Club. Every time they've won a trophy, they've found our name already on the Winners' Board. So, trust me; I just know!!?

  3. The preview I wrote for the local rag. When : Tuesday 27th October 2020, 7.45pmWhere : Ewood Park, Blackburn, Lancashire, BB2 4JFCapacity : 31,367Midweek. Away. Blackburn Rovers. Three good reasons to just pretend this game just doesn’t exist in the fixture list and jump straight to Friday’s exchange of pleasantries with Coventry. Why? Well not only is Reading’s record at Ewood rather less than impressive but mainly because Reading’s midweek (ie games played on a Tuesday or Wednesday evening) away league form is somewhat akin to something very cr@ppy indeed having a cr@ppy cr@p attack on the way to cr@psville. Reading have basically amassed a massive total of zero away wins in the league in midweek games in the last 2.5 years. In addition only 2 games have been won since a 4-2 win at Leeds on 11 March 2014, which is now a woeful run of 2 out of 36 games. Then there’s Blackburn themselves, a useful squad that is well organised and one more then capable of turning sides over as Wycombe, Derby and Coventry have already found out by shipping 13 goals to them without reply. And if Reading go to Ewood and do yet another sit back and do nothing for the opening half an hour it may be inviting a very serious problem. The biggest threat on offer to Reading will be Blackburn striker Adam Armstrong who has already grabbed 7 goals in 7 appearances which is 4 more than the next highest scorer Bradley Johnson. Also ones to very carefully watch will be on loan Harvey Elliott and Lewis Holtby. Their last starting XI for the 4-0 trashing of Coventry was Kaminski, Rankin-Costello, Lenihan, Williams, Douglas, Trybull, Johnson, Holtby, Elliott, Armstrong and Brereton though that score may have flattered slightly as Coventry were down to 10 after only a quarter of an hour.Daniel Ayala is likely to miss the game with a groin problem while Reading remain without Yiadom, Swift, Araruna and Baldock.Think I can safely say now this is one game we’d all happily take a point from now if it was offered.RefereeDavid “thank god there’s no VAR” CootePreviously22 Jul 20 > Reading 1-4 Swansea City07 July 20 > Reading 0-0 Huddersfield Town05 October 19 > Bristol City 1-0 Reading13 April 19 > Reading 2-1 Brentford13 Feb 19 > Reading 2-1 Blackburn Rovers22 Dec 2018 > Reading 0-1 Middlesbrough14 Apr 2018 > Reading 2-2 Sunderland27 Feb 2018 > Nottm Forest 1-1 Reading11 Dec 2017 > Reading 2-2 Cardiff City23 Sep 2017 > Reading 1-1 Hull City26 Aug 2017 > Birmingham City 0-2 Reading24 Jan 2017 > Reading 1-0 Fulham15 Oct 2016 > Queen's Park Rangers 1-1 Reading15 Mar 2016 > Brighton & Hove Albion 1-0 Reading23 Jan 2016 > Reading 1-1 Sheffield Wednesday19 Sep 2015 > Bristol City 0-2 Reading25 Mar 2014 > Reading 1-3 BarnsleyHistoricallyAs with most trips up north Reading do not have a very impressive record. 4. A classic "must score first" scenario this one. If we don't it could be a long night,; they've beaten Cardiff & Watford in their run to 1st place so cant be taken lightly. Despite the suggestion they've been lucky, there must be more to it than that; their performance here last season & their 2nd goal on Sat show there's no shortage of ability there, and we know what Joao can do if motivated. That said, I believe we have enough to give them defensive nightmares. It's imperative that we get off to a strong start, front foot from the off, high press, incisive penetrating balls forward through the lines, let BB & Elliot run at 'em and draw the fouls for Holtby & Douglas set pieces. We have many more options than we used to and must utilise them from the first whistle. Personnel-wise I would keep it as close to the Cov starting 11. Hope Kaminski is ok as I know little about Pears (not a criticism, just better the devil you know). If Ayala is deemed fit I would leave him on the bench for now as Lenihan & Williams did nothing wrong & play well together.

  5. Our own fans seem desperate to paint the whole fan base as a blood thirsty mob and I just cant get my head around it.

  6. Again, of course there are a minority of dickheads. Especially away when folk have been on the piss all day. I’ve heard all kind of bollocks shouted out over the years. Social media is a modern example of it. But, on the whole, BB has been well supported by the fanbase as he went through a really tough couple of years... amazed this is even a debate and people can’t separate a small number of idiots from a entire fanbase.

  7. I've never abused a player at a game. I don't see the point, it's hardly likely to make them play better. That's at a game, they have to be there , they don't have to come on here and read what people write on here . Getting back to the game. The fourth goal was a classic example of how effective wing play can be. We get in up the sideline, everybody is running back towards goal, The Coventry back four are looking out to where the danger is. Gallagher just stops running and lets all the Coventry defenders run away from him. A huge gap opens right in front of him and he can hardly miss. He's obviously learnt something about finding space but we needed to get their back four turned around and running back towards their own goal first. . More wing play please Rovers.

  8. One of my mates has been a season ticket holder at Anfield for 45 years and he also goes to reserve and academy games whenever he can, especially now he's retired. He told me when we first signed this lad on loan that he is the best teenager he's ever seen. When you think of some of the young players LFC have produced in the past 25 years that is some praise indeed. Better than Owen, Fowler, Gerrard, Carragher etc etc "Look after him" was his plea!

  9. Best bit of the game. I think I find him so endearing because he's daft as a brush.

  10. I’m talking generally, not particularly to you islander. But actually more towards the daft stuff I keep reading that makes out Rovers fans (and bizarrely Lancastrians specifically) are worse than anybody else. It’s dead simple, come to any club for big money and be really poor for two years, you’ll get at least grumbling and a few dickheads being abusive and totally out of order. The difference is Rovers fans generally have been really supportive and it hasn’t *on the whole* got any stronger than grumbling, I’ve been surprised just how much we’ve been behind him, as it shows how the fanbase has mellowed in recent years and BB would have copped much worse at many other clubs.

  11. Always been a strand of our support like this. In the PL days you always used to hear ‘shit are Rovers fans’, ‘gates are poor’. Even though we were the best supported club in the country by population, a town with challenging demographics of 100,000 with average crowds of 25,000. ‘Poor?’ It was fantastic support. But what chance do you have trying to negate Dingle nonsense like ‘not a football town, Blackburn’ when your own fans constantly belittle themselves.

  12. I haven't seen Pears play but he's fairly rated, so it feels a lot better knowing we have him behind rather than Leutweiller. With any luck it's Nyambe in for JRC, same midfield with maybe Johnson dropping out for Rothwell and same front 3. Be probably our best team, keeper / Ayala aside. Confident about this. Not stopped being excited about a game so far this season. Reading is a big test though and we have come up short against Watford and Bournemouth this year. 3rd time lucky really. I want to be the team that debilitates this Reading squad and puts 5 past a once-solid defence. Brereton to continue his fantastic form too. How I wish we could be in the stadium and roaring his name right now. He deserves it really. The lad never put the price tag on his head, he's kept quiet amidst the criticism (although I don't think it as vocal as some but was clearly there) and now he is getting his rewards. A truly fantastic performance on Saturday and he seems to have got better when the squad around him has. Coincidence? Definitely not.

  13. So I take it after two years of really poor performances after a £7 million deal, he wouldn’t be receiving anything as vicious as ‘tuts’ and ‘sighs’ like the bear pits of Lancashire anywhere else?

  14. In the great scheme of things does how much Brereton cost or how bad he was previously matter. He didn’t ask to be bought for that amount so when did it become his responsibility. Has a club a lot of our spending has been farcical and the brereton fee if 100% true is minor. If we where all measured and judged on what we did previously in our career there would be very few on here who could say yeah we have just been great. It’s about improving and without any doubt this lad has got his head down and worked and that in any walk of life should be applauded. I’ve watched every game and that kid is busting a gut for us and that shirt he has a great attitude and work ethos. The rovers crowd admire grafters players who give it their all and he’s is one of them.

  15. I instantly regretted opening this thread to find out what it was about. At the risk of seeming like an old curmudgeon, one aspect of bygone days that I yearn for is not having a clue who players wives/girlfriends are.

  18. I enjoyed it It was just as much the Bradley Dack show than the Olivia Attwood show. Featured Rothwell and Mulgrew too. If you absolutely detest reality TV then it probably isn't for you, but if you are a Dack fan then give it a watch!

  19. My best mate is a Pool fan and he raves about him similar. Says forget the likes of Harvey Barnes who is still a player that will have a top career, this kid is going right to the very top. Says alot that Barnes was always going to be loaned out but they wanted Elliott in their squad. Kudos to TM for convincing them to send him to us.

  20. Your term 'Lancastrians' was a generalisation, perhaps you should be more specific. I have been critical of many Rovers players over many years but critical of aspects of their play, not them as people. Anybody in the public eye is open to criticism, it goes with the territory and the majority accept that but going back to your original post Rovers fans as a collective are categorically no better or worse than supporters anywhere. To say otherwise is simply not true.

  21. Rothwell not available. Still self isolating. Why drop JRC for Nyambe? Hopefully the same front 3 continue. Would be disappointed if Gallagher replaced any of them at kick off. Don't want to see Bell back ahead of Douglas or Buckley instead of Johnson. Keep the faith TM. Don't tinker unless you have to!

  22. Kaminski has been an absolutely fantastic signing. Early days, but I think he'll become our best keeper since Friedel. We will miss him if he's out, but I think Pears should be a capable deputy. Awesome to have this squad depth and I think it will hold us in good stead to make the playoffs.

  24. I think (and this isn't BBs fault,) £7m was far too much for a Championship side to pay for potential. Even most Premiership sides would have hesitated at that price. If he continues to improve, and possibly plays a key role in promotion we may look back and congratulate TM for his eye for a player - but will still think it was a huge gamble for a mid table Championship club.

  26. I set myself up an account just to answer that question(yes we did genuinely used to be known as the biscuitmen rather than the royals) Our preferred tactic is 4231 but the formation does change in game depending on how we’re doing, for example we got Laurent to sit deeper than Semedo and Rinomhota on Saturday so we became some sort of wide 433. We’re very much a counter attacking side who look to frustrate the opposition by allowing them to have plenty of possession. Laurent and Rinomhota sit just in front of our defence and they essentially fill in any gaps that open up(otherwise press the man on the ball) to restrict opponents to half chances and frustrated players taking long shots. This allows one of our fullbacks to push forward and not worry too much about losing the ball, even though both Esteves and Richards are fairly quick themselves so can track back well. Rafael hasn’t really been tested in any of our games although he has proven to be reliable whenever called upon I expect he will be tested on Tuesday. Attacking wise we are not particularly good. We try to counter but it’s normally given away straight away especially if someone presses us(we initially struggled to get going against Barnsley and Rotherham because of that). For some reason, we are ridiculously clinical at the moment and there’s question marks over whether that is sustainable. A lot of our goals come from us punishing a defensive mistake from a set piece in particular or these horrible long balls that defences seem to struggle to deal with. We are a quick and physically strong side. Paunovic is still trying to find the answer- he’s only been in the job for two months. I do think each of Norwich, Blackburn and Brentford will be a good test to see how good we are defensively, we’ve not really faced anyone with a particularly good attack. We haven’t trialed for a second in the league this season, so if you manage to get an early goal it would be a good test to see what we’re made of.

  34. I think we'll win this one. I'm not fooled by their early season form, they are hugely over performing on the back of a new manager bounce. We've got a superior team to them and should expect to win.

  35. He has been poor but in my opinion he was mismanaged also. He was the wrong signing to bring in, that 7 million should have been used on a proven player or 2 rather than a project. But im sensible enough to realise Brereton didn't place the price tag on his head, as far as I'm aware he has never come out saying he was worth that sort of money. I just don't agree screaming at a 19 year old that he is a useless donkey etc is right. And I was beyond annoyed after the Forest game to be met with a post from a fellow rovers fan gloating that Brereton had a shit game.I have often thought a rovers player has been shit but iv never ever been happy when he has had a poor game so I could be proven right . Even when he has 2 excellent performances in a row same poster gives no credit. This season Brereton has been very good and he deserves credit for it

  36. Big difference between thinking BB was a poor signing and BB getting abused. I thought and still do that 7 mil for him back then was a bad transfer. He has been fantastic so far this season and I have always wanted him to do well. Never had anything personal against the lad, he didnt ask to be bought for that much and i feel he has been used wrongly. Straight after the last result, i went to his thread to give him praise. Does that mean i think he has been a good signing overall, no.

  39. You always get some idiot everywhere. I can remember one bloke standing up and screaming abuse at Dunn everytime he got the ball! At Ewood v Villa. His face was purple and the veins on his neck stood out like rope. Unbelievable. It went on the whole game----which we won and Dunn scored! Had the most beautiful blonde with him too. I remember thinking "what the hell does she see in him?"----a feeling I've often had by the way!!

  40. I'd pick the same starting eleven from Saturday, unless anyone is struggling with fitness. The 2 games where we've struggled to break down teams (Cardiff and Forest), Nyambe had replaced JRC at right back. Let Reading worry about us and us have the nous to cope with their obvious gameplan. If their fullbacks are pressed back and concerned foremost with containing Elliott/Dolan, Brereton, JRC and Douglas, they shouldn't venture forward too much. Key for me is getting an early goal, do that and I think we'll win.

  41. Are you including yourself as a Lancastrian? Have you never seen Mowbray with his hands on his head after one of his players has made a mistake. Now that is a public condemnation of a player. With the benefit or having refereed on around 86 professional grounds in the country I can say that Rovers fans are no worse than anywhere else. It really grates when Rovers fans are critical of each other, often without foundation.

  43. That’s football fans, there will always be a minority of dickheads, I’ll tell you now he would not have got the level of goodwill he’s had here after being so poor for two years at a lot of other clubs - I’m proud of our support on that score.

  44. Just got this email from a mate of mine: The last time the Rovers scored more than 16 in the first seven games of a season before this year was in the 1997-98 campaign when they knocked in 18, mainly because of 7 at home to Sheffield Wednesday. Chris Sutton scored 7 in the first 7 that year, a figure that Adam Armstrong has just equalled and other famous names also cracked in 7 in other previous seasons. These are Alan Shearer, Simon Garner, Andy McEvoy, Derek Dougan, Peter Dobing and Tommy Briggs but we have to go back to 1954-55 to find Eddie Quigley scoring 8 in the first 7 games. Roll on Tuesday against Reading when other notable performances may be achieved.

  46. As the great Bill Shankly said: "Aim for the sky and you'll reach the ceiling. Aim for the ceiling and you'll stay on the floor". Our aim has to be top 2 - who the feck wants to finish 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th and still be in the Championship next season.
