Once regarded as a future golden boy of English football, Ainscow's career never blossomed after a promising start at Blackpool. A quick, effusive ball player with energy to spare he was particularly disappointing on Merseyside and a move to Wolverhampton was fraught since he kept his home in Ormskirk and travelled. Given fourteen days notice he was signed by the Rovers on non contract terms, ostensibly to help with the young reserve side. He was to stay three years and although he was used mainly as a substitute he was in the side when they won the Full Members' Cup in 1987. After his playing days were over he coached Ellesmere Port Town and later assisted in the hospitality suites at Ewood. He worked at a variety of jobs, post man, Ormskirk newsagent and then delivered fruit and vegetables around Merseyside.
