As Bobby Moore's replacement at Fulham he earned a reputation as a footballing defender with poise, mobility and good distribution. After seven years with the club he moved on to West Ham where he became Alvin Martin's partner. In all he stayed ten years with the Hammers but personal honours eluded him. Released in 1994 he was training with Barnet when the Rovers asked him to come north to replace the retired Kevin Moran and absconded David May. A successful trial in a friendly against Celtic earned him a debut in the Charity Shield final and a regular place until the turn of the year in the side that ultimately won the Premiership. Although he lost his place to Ian Pearce he had sufficient appearances to qualify for a medal, his first major honour. Released at the end of the season he kept fit with Barnet until Crystal Palace offered him terms. Unhappily he was injured for most of the time and saw out his playing days with Maidenhead. On retiring he was employed by Capital Radio as co-commentator with Jonathan Pearce and worked in the family business. He later became chairman of Southern League Premier side Walton Casuals.
