    Summary

After playing as a schoolboy for several clubs Burgess was granted a traineeship at the Rovers (with compensation paid to Everton). A huge, but athletic player, he had jumped 1.95 metres in the high jump and opened the bowling for Buxton. His size and goal scoring ability made him a prospect and he was fast tracked with a loan spell in Australia (where he was voted the national Under 21 player of the year) and at Brentford (where he scored 17 goals). Despite this Souness had given up on him making a Premiership player and he was moved on to Stockport where he struggled to make an impact. His situation appeared bleak when he struggled at Oldham but he found form at Hull and established himself in the Republic of Ireland Under 21 side. He had a successful spell with Blackpool but realised that he needed to look to the future. Although he signed for Tranmere in the summer of 2012 he decided to enrol as a trainee Primary School trainer at Edgehill College in Ormskirk, a sound decision from a man who had experienced twenty knee operations. After obtaining his post graduate degree he obtained work as a teacher at Rosecacre Primary School in Blackpool.
