There was much competition for the signature of Atherton a tall Welsh boy who clearly had qualities as a industrious midfield forager. He contributed to a good youth team during the 1968/69 season and it was no surprise that he was given an extended run in the first team the year after. The arrival of a new manager, Ken Furphy, changed all that. He had little time for Atherton's more precise play and promoted the younger Bradford and McDonald ahead of him and within a matter of months his contract was cancelled. Returning to North Wales he played for Bangor City but was diagnosed with motor neurone disease which brought a premature death at the age of 36.
