The son of a Senegalese First Division footballer, Boubaar Diallo “Paolo” of Ndiambour de Louca, Diouf played age group international football for his country and made first team appearances for Kaani Gui (lying about his age). At the age of fourteen he was invited to France to join the Lens academy. The future pattern of his career was soon established and he failed to grasp the opportunity and returned home to play for ASC Kaani Gui, in the country’s second city St Leone. Estranged from his father he was brought up by his grandmother. His scoring exploits attracted the attention of French clubs and he joined Sochaux, moving after a season to Rennes. Although he played well for the Brittany side a close season accident when he crashed a team mate’s car, driving without insurance or licence, prompted them to accept an offer from Lens for his services. By then he had started to play for his country and his supreme, forceful skills and eye for a goal prompted Liverpool to pay a huge fee for his services. He failed to establish himself on Merseyside but found a home at The Reebok where his versatility and game changing interventions where put to good use by Sam Allardyce. Unhappy when Allardyce left He had a frustrating spell in the North-East before the chance to team up again with Allardyce brought him to Ewood. A controversial figure, on and off the field, he intermingled moments of great skill with more disreputable incidents where he has been guilty of spitting and simulation. Controversy was not a feature of his first half season, where he settled in quietly on the right side of midfield, working diligently and applying himself well. However it arose in January 2011 when he was said to have verbally abused QPR’s Jon Mackie, who broke his own leg with a bad tackle on Diouf’s friend, Gael Givet. He was not given backing by the club and joined Rangers on loan, where he gained a Championship and League Cup Winners’ medals.
