    Summary

A poultry dresser from Knutsford, the son of a farm labourer, he was nicknamed Pepper although the reason was never given. He came to Ewood with a reputation as a ball player but had scored five goals for Cheshire in a game against Lancashire. His speed was so great that he had tried his hand on the professional sprinting circuit and in a game against Liverpool he scored an amazing goal when he ran from the edge of the penalty area and finished with a thunderous shot. He lost a year's football because of typhoid fever and this led to his release. Deteriorating eyesight caused him ultimately to go blind and the Rovers went to Northwich to play a match for his benefit.  His son Lance played for the reserve team at Bury, in his father’s position on the wing.
