    Summary

Beresford started his football in Derbyshire, where he worked as a miner, but his team played many fixtures in Lancashire and he soon signed for Church. Accrington decided to give him a trial but regretted it when one of their supporters was found to have given him a pig in order to remain with the club. Subsequently Accrington was expelled from  the FA for professionalism. Beresford was forced to return to Church. He returned to Derbyshire to play for Brampton and was also playing occasionally for Oswaldtwistle  when the Rovers offered him terms. Able to play on the right wing or at centre forward he was criticised for lacking commitment and when the Football League commenced he alternated with Haresnape. Soon after he joined Hyde but did not stay log before he moved to Nottingham. In 1892 Bestwood Church Institute was ordered to replay the Nottinghamshire Junior cup tie with Hucknall Town because of his presence and the fact that he had never been re-instated as an amateur. Soon after his health diminished and at the age of 32 he died following influenza and inflammation.
