Although signed as a right winger Crisp was a lively, dependable type who could be relied upon to tackle any forward position with enthusiasm. After his debut on the right he was moved to the left when Byers was dismissed and also had a spell at inside left but never re-captured the deadly shooting that helped West Brom to the championship. His one cup goal was a classic that helped extend a run that took the club to the semi-final and produced gate receipts that made a huge difference to the Rovers. He joined the licensed trade after he retired but died at a tragically early age. During the war he played for the Kynocha works team.
