    Summary

A mass of contradictions, Ferguson was a bewitching, leggy, dribbling machine who the Rovers rightly saw as a devastating force down the right flank, switching him from the inside forward position he had played at Accrington Stanley. Cast on the soccer scrap heap when Stanley folded he made the short trip to Ewood and his conversion to the number seven shirt was such an overwhelming success that the Rovers were able to move Bryan Douglas inside, without losing effectiveness on the flank. Never a man to accept mistreatment he dispensed his own justice, and in doing so he brought into play a ferocious tackling instinct that was surprising in such an artist. Extremely popular with the crowd he became unsettled when many of the better players were allowed to leave, his situation not being aided by the club's desire to play him at right back. He had every potential for the position except desire but he found a new home at Aston Villa, where he had once contributed the most amazing individual goal scored by the Rovers. Serving a managerial apprenticeship as player-coach with Akrannes he guided them to two national championships. He moved to Cyprus where he coached Apoel to a first and then second place finish and also worked with Evagoras. In Turkey he coached Karsyaka and in Sweden, Vasterhaninge . For such a well respected continental coach it is puzzling why he never succeeded in England. After a spell with Nelson he took a pub in Horwich. He later managed Rochdale and Enfield but was dismissed by both clubs for failure to meet expectations. Arthritis hit him at a relatively young age and hampered him so much that he was forced to forego any further involvement with the game.
