Unusually tall for the time he was one of several players who attempted to make the centre forward position their own. Given only a cup tie against Accrington he helped his cause by scoring but the fact that the side suffered a humiliating loss weighed against him. Arthur Cowell had meanwhile become the assistant manager at Wrexham and he came back to take him to Wales. He played for one season before returning to Scotland and later came to Tranmere for a single league appearance. In Scotland he had been a postman and played for the PO Messengers. When the war started he worked in Birmingham as a labourer at a power station.
