  1. People wear trainers for everything now. I remember getting my first pair in about 1966. Light Blue “ Adidas “ leather ones , I can’t recall the name. I must have been the first in Rochdale. I had to order them specially from our local sports shop. Pre season we’d been training on our local pitch and we went to the pub after for a shanty. I didn’t bother taking them off and when we walked into the pub it was like I had two heads ! All the old blokes were staring at them and muttering into their pints of mild. Remember when you could actually ask a shop owner to order something for you and they would ? I was looking through some of my mums old photos the other day and I came across one I’d had taken by one of those freelance photographs that lurked around main streets in the day and pubs at night. They’d take your photo for a small fee, take your name and address, and post the photo on to you later. Oliver Reed plays one in the film “ The System “ which is all about similar guys at a seaside resort. It’s on YouTube if you ever have a spare 90 minutes. I’d be about 19, I think I’d just been for an interview, and I was wearing my Sunday Best. Navy blue 3 button mohair suit, a sort of paisley tie and a light blue silk pocket hanky. Made to measure at “ Mr Senior “. Everybody my age dressed like that then. Casual clothes were only just emerging on the scene. You’d wear a suit to go to the football !
  2. Plus the point that big followings only help if you’re doing ok. If you’re losing they can soon get restive.
  3. I should think so. Selling him without one would have been madness. Even the Chicken Chokers aren’t that stupid.
  4. I think the difference is, to a greater or lesser extent, they all wanted to leave. I don’t think Wharton did.
  5. True. I’ve still seen back passes end up in the goals though.
  6. I don’t know why teams don’t play like that. What use is Dolan defending a corner ? Get him on the half way line.
  7. Regarding the actual incident I was always told to pass the ball back wide of the goal if possible. Having said that we weren’t giving it back to the keeper on multiple occasions every five minutes.
  8. They should have tried for Kaminski - £2 million and a better bet than either of those.
  9. The lad’s got what you can’t teach. He carries his own space around with him. He’s two passes in front of play. Terrific vision and passing skills. If he’d gone to Liverpool or Arsenal instead of Palace he be knocking on the England door now.
  10. Really, that’s shame. I remember coming home from work on the last day of an Ashes test in the UK. It was about 4-50 pm when games finished at 6-00 pm.The Aussies were hanging on for a draw at about 55 for 2. Underwood had them all out in under an hour on a wicket that was helping him. For the last couple of wickets every England fielder was in camera shot surrounding the batsman ! Thanks for the memories Derek. Edit - just looked it up. The Oval 1968. The highlights are on YouTube for those interested.
