Italians in general are much healthier than us Brits smoking aside. They have far lower rates of diabetes, heart disease and obesity than us Brits. They eat healthier and are generally in better health in older age. I lost my grandad 2 years ago. Who was still pretty fit even at 91. Yes he smoked like most Italians do. However his diet was immense given the lack of formal education Southern Italiens received in 30 and 40s I'm convinced that when a full and comprehensive review is done. One of the key findings that will come out of it. Will find how unhealthy we are as a nation. Which is the failing of successive Tory and Labour governments. What's so wrong in learning kids about nutrition, expanding space so people can grow their own fruit and veg and taxing the hell out of sugury and fatty foods

Yes I've read it others similar. What the scope of such studies are limited too are clinical. They dont look at the physical characteristics of each nation whether that socio economic, demographic or population mapping. There was good reason why Britain was predicted to have a large death toll. Well before the government did or didn't put certain plans in place. Research done before the first recorded death suggested a high death. Researches would of looked at the whole picture including public health (which is woeful) the amount of people which of have chronic illness ( which is significantly higher than most if Europe) and they would of looked at population density

I think it's time for logic and reason to give up. I'll break it down for you... New Zealand large remote island population 4.8 million. Lots of natural resources, houses and commuties more less densely populated UK 20% smaller population 66 million. I realy do despair as to why this dosent compute

Ardern has the luxury of knowing that due to its size and popation distribution she can make certain promises and probably get away with it As for Cuomo, he has done a great job, in terms of presentation and communication. Top marks, still dosent hide the fact that NY state has as many deaths as the UK, has had chronic shortages of PPE and ventilators. If he was the UK pm you would of still hammered him irrespective of his communication skills

Australia's cities are significantly less in terms of density than the UK. Take Sydney and London as examples. London has double the population. Sydney is nearly 12 times larger in terms of city boundaries If you are resource rich, you are not reliant on imports. As such you can close your borders. Australia has 100s of billions more arable and agricultural land to sustain itself. It also has vast amount of metals, coals and gas. To build stuff. The UK on the other is the polar opposite. Trying to compare the UK to Australia or NZ is pointless. As much as it fits a certain narrative

Australia is not a good comparison or example imo. It is possibly for its size the most natural resource rich and sparsely populated nation on earth. It is a major exporter. The UK is a major importer If we close our borders entirely, we starve and the economy dies. NZ and Australia have so many natural advantages that is moot to make any comparison to the UK. Better comparisons are with the belelux nations

I was waiting for NZ to creep into this conversation. NZ Population 4.8 million, UK 66 million. NZ area is around 20% larger NZ is possibly better placed that any nation in the world to fight coronavirus as social distancing is so much easier for them. There cities are relatively small and density in their cities makes it easier to social distance. NZ economy is also not commerce and finance based. They are blessed with lots of fertile land and export lots of products. In this country we don't the ability to close the borders for sustained periods. NZ can be self sufficient for a long period both economically and in terms of foods. We are somewhat the opposite due to the overpopulation of our Isles and over reliance on imports and international commerece

THe head of the ONS nick stripe Lots of comment about the UK having the highest death toll in Europe. International comparisons are incredibly difficult to do and will be for some time to come. UK death registrations data is the fastest, most frequent and most in depth than any other stats agency. 1/n But death registrations data is what will eventually allow us to compare e.g. ISTAT (Italian stats agency) yesterday brought out data for deaths in March. It showed 25k excess deaths and almost double those attributed to COVID previously We've just reported up to 24 April 2/n He also confirms that of those who have been recorded as dying of Covid 19. 85% of them actually died from the disease. As this early days, the information is inaccurate it is likely imo to get rounded down. As we have been woeful in comparison to Germany in determinang true cause of death. After reading his posts they are based on facts they do not have an agenda and keep to the point. It's realy baffling why so many people would sooner read a journalists prediction. Which is been pulled from the ons results Why not just read the ONS?

You just answered yourself, if we don't understand the virus. What it is, how it mutates and ultimately how it kills. How can we accurately record deaths and therefore compare?

Yet you still feel qualified to state we " have the worst record in Europe" which is it it?

Yes I cut and paste all my posts from the Internet 🤣😜 If you read Giles' own posts and ons posts on twitter. You can see for yourself how and where the information is collated. He is projecting based on modelling. You can see why this information can't be used A). As a comparison to other nations from Giles own postings the UK and possibly Belgium are in a very small group of nations that record, map and publish excess deaths live. The rest of Europe has weeks if not months worth of lag. As someone who knows the country and culture well I'd suggest Italy excess death toll is whoefuly inaccurate b, he is getting raw data from ons and running his own projections/ predictions based on formula and projections. Why not just wait for the actual data, if in his own words we are actually quite good at the recording and publishing of it C) as the UK is seemingly recording anyone who dies with covid 19 as the cause of death. The figure attributed to covid 19 is likely to change. Whilst this dosent affect actual excess deaths per SE. How does Giles know to what extent those excess deaths are part of a cycle of higher deaths this year? We were told that last year life expectancy was projected to decline in the upcoming years. I don't see why their is the need to inflame an already intolerable situation. With facts that aren't realy facts and comparisons with nations that are weeks if not months behind in their own recordings as per your own Expert. This is without delving into demographic, cultural and socio economic comparison

So your facts turn to be actually untrue as they are based on projections.... So it now turns out that Chris Giles figured are based his algorithmic predictions and they pull stats from ons. Why not just use ons? Most Intresting is that all of the new Chris Giles disciples, Have failed to mention. Is how other nations record excess deaths. By his own admission the UK is the only nation with near instant recording and transparent data. Italy and Germany are a full month behind. Spain similar. Yet we are so keen to compare BTW I have no idea why my font style changed 😂

Thought you were describing philipl for a moment... 😂😂 So now it suits journalists have more expertise than than scientific modellers and proffessors who have hundreds of peer reviewed artclices and have spent their entire lives dedicated to their chosen field. Chris Giles sounds more braniac than any living mortal

So you want to compare a non specialist, journalists figures to other countries, that record deaths in a completely different manner. I. E only recording hospital deaths Sounds sensible....

    Coronavirus

Funnily enough I know who Chris Giles is... Amazing how us non socialists can read I don't see anywhere within his CV his qualifications in data mapping or statistical recording?? I tend to stick to ons figures or figures produced by John Hopkins. Which is non partial and provide me with all the raw data I need. I realy don't need any newspaper or media outlet to put a spin on numbers in order to keep readership or viewership up. I reiterate my Op, which it seems is unanswerable (without going down the same old dogmatic argument). We are so keen on comparisons. Yet nobody is keen to make comparisons to the two countries we have most demographic comparison with. Belgium and The Netherlands. I wonder why this is?

    Coronavirus

No offence but Chris Giles is a journalist. I pay 0% notice to journalists in scientific matters. It's his lively hood to sell stories. You have again failed to provide any balence to your posts, but I guess that isn't your MO. Just pages and pages of misquoting and speaking down to people.

So by your flawed logic, how do you rate the Dutch and Belgian esponse to covid 19?. You were "bigging up" the belgians last week. Scale up Belgiums population to that of the UK you have 47000 deaths. The Dutch aren't far behind. Spain scaled up are on 36000. You also fail to mention that quite a few nations in Europe are still not counting community or residential deaths. Its unlikely for example that Spain will ever be to correctly count this as several care homes were found of abandoned of staff. The army found most of residents had died, when and how is to be determined.

To add some context and reality to this twilight zone paradigm. Italy at the start of April reported over 100 dead doctors and nurses. Another 17000 tested positive for covid 19 The UK governments fault?

    Coronavirus

Sorry only just seen this post. It's wrong on so many levels.... You talk of incite. Its clear that you have it all and clearly should be advising sage. Your measures involve a bar of soap and water. No requirement for PPE... As you say the reason why front line staff are less likely to die from Covid is due to their duditious hygiene regime 🙄 RE echo Chambers, as to which you have now raised on 3 occasions. I'd suggest constantly quoting about the use of soap and water as a classic example. I can see through the point you raise. You want to beat the govt on the PPE issue. Which is fine. However you originally jumped on my quote regarding the risk of harm to front line health staff and the rest of us. You stated that the reason they were statistically less likely to die was due to better hygiene. I fail to see how hand washing would save a care worker or nurse when someone with covid is coughing in their face? Unless again you have some greater incite on this matter? Woudnt it be simpler and in fact more accurate to just say that that the vast majority of front staff do have PPE. Coupled with the correct infectious disease control procedures (including hand washing) could answer this anomaly. However again I guess you won't, as it dosent fit yours and so many others narrative. It's all very silly realy

I have been trying to get this point across for weeks. Poor diet, lifestyle, smoking, chronic health issues ie respitory conditions. Meant that the UK would always have a higher death rate than most other European nations. Coupled with the highest population density of any major European nation. Successive failure by govt for decades to invest in public health, proper nutrition education/lifestyle coaching in schools and a complete overall of the welfare system We had the perfect cocktail. This BBC report touches on the inaquality of outcomes between poor deprived areas and those least deprived. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-52506979

My wife works for one of the largest trusts in the UK. My father is a recently retired ward manager and I have three nurses in the family. The vast majority of NHS staff are customer facing. The notion that 2/3 of the workforce is simply not true. Although like all public services their are too many back office staff. I'm not sure exactly what your point is other than to state that lower death rated for front line health staff is due to them washing their hands? Which is completely nonsensical. Of course front line health staff are exposed to covid 19 multiple times more than average Joe. To dispute this point is again nonsensical
  23. Bazzanotsogreat

    Coronavirus

That's incorrect my wife works at one of top 5 biggest trusts in the UK and they to date have no PPE shortages. Furthermore my very elderly nan is currently quite ill and has been at the same hospital (non covid related) for some 3 weeks. All of the front line staff have had full PPE on at all times. Including full visors at times
  24. Bazzanotsogreat

    Coronavirus

And yet for all the lack of ppe. People not working in front line health and social care roles are more likely to die than people that do Dosent realy fit your narrative that.. Oh it might be down to superior hygiene.. My bad
  25. Bazzanotsogreat

    Coronavirus

Sorry that is completely uncorrobated nonsense. So in essence what your saying is that people are dying because of unsatisfactory hygiene? And the only reason that front line nhs/social care staff are dying in less numbers is down to their superior hygiene. Despite in certain cases been surrounded by people with covid 19 for 12 hours shifts
