Joe Biden warns no US-UK trade deal if GFA is broken. It's all going swimmingly Tweet See new Tweets Tweet Joe Biden @JoeBiden · 1h We can’t allow the Good Friday Agreement that brought peace to Northern Ireland to become a casualty of Brexit. Any trade deal between the U.S. and U.K. must be contingent upon respect for the Agreement and preventing the return of a hard border. Period. Quote Tweet House Foreign Affairs Committee @HouseForeign · 15 Sep Chair @RepEliotEngel leads bipartisan effort calling on UK to honor Good Friday Agreement while negotiating Brexit. In a letter to @BorisJohnson, they warned that Congress will not support a - free trade agreement if Britain fails to uphold commitments with Northern Ireland. Show this thread biden.html

It's laughable reading about all these wonderful trade deals. The recently agreed Japan deal will boost the UK economy by 0.07 per cent (hurrah) and is worse in many respects than the previous EU-Japan deal which we part of while any deal with the EU will not come close to replicating the benefits of being a member of the single market. As for fishing, it's worth about 0.1 per cent of UK GDP but if it prevents a EU-UK trade deal being agreed has the potential to cause massive disruption to the economy. Fishing is like coal mining.....it's a tough, hard job and no one wants to do it any more. The President of the European Commission has been speaking this morning in her state of the union address to the European Parliament. It's worth repeating her words, to show Brexiteers and the UK government what having principles means: “This Withdrawal Agreement took three years to negotiate, and we worked relentlessly on it, line by line, word by word, together we’ve succeeded. “And the result guarantees our citizens’ rights, financial interests, the integrity of the single market and crucially the Good Friday Agreement. The European Union and the UK jointly agreed it was the best, and only way, for ensuring peace on the island of Ireland. “We will never backtrack on that. And this agreement has been ratified by this house and by the House of Commons. It cannot be unilaterally changed, disregarded or disapplied. This is a matter of law, trust and good faith."

You're wasting your time and why argue with these people when a newly-elected Red Wall Tory MP came out with this today in support of Johnson's stance: “Many of us couldn’t give a stuff about what the EU says because our voters don’t care either" ..... which neatly sums up the lamentable quality of the average Tory MP of the post-Brexit era and why the party has now morphed into a more extreme version of Ukip A friend who contacted his MP to object to the government's approach received a reply that was just a simple embarrassment, a cut and paste of a Tory whip’s response that apparently the bill doesn’t break the law and was just a press rumour! How do you deal with this level of ignorance that goes beyond even that of the class dunce?

The point is, which went way over the heads of some GCSE failures, is that the government created a special exemption for their bloodsport friends. Its coronavirus guidance page provides clear instructions on “what you can and can’t do” from Monday 14 September, including mainstream sports, but the reference to shooting is the only one qualified with a note that says: “Including hunting and paintball that requires a shotgun or firearms certificate licence”. In a statement on its website, British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC). said: “The ‘rule of six’ restrictions brought in today could have disrupted game shooting which usually includes eight or more people. However, the exemption will allow shooting to operate under Covid-safe guidance.” Ian Bell, the organisation’s chief executive, said: “The government’s decision to allow shooting to continue in its current format in England is the right one.”

Is the 6-people rule simpler though when it varies from England to Scotland and Wales and Northern Ireland and includes children in some but not in others ? https://www.itv.com/news/2020-09-11/rule-of-six-coronavirus-restrictions-explained-for-england-northern-ireland-scotland-and-wales Good to see there are no restrictions on hunting and grouse shooting parties though. That'll appeal to the Red Wall voters.

You're getting in Dream of 1995 territory here - making stuff up. No one disputes there were multiple reasons for the Brexit vote - but that wasn't what I said if you read my post. Fact is, the immigration / racist line was a significant contributing factor to the Leave vote and without it there's no way Leave would have got over the winning line.

Come on Silas, you're not daft and you know the driving force behind Brexit was a combination of racism and nationalism. Sure, some (deluded) people thought there were economic benefits and some even fell for the "sovereignty" and "taking back control" line but the over-riding message of Leave to win over the man on the street was fear of Johnny Foreigner and particularly those with dark skins - look at the lying "70 million Turks are heading here" ads on TV and in the national press in the weeks before the vote. These racists were celebrating in the streets after the referendum thinking all the Poles and Asians were going to be sent back to their countries of origin on the next available plane and there's stuff all over the internet about the huge rise in hate crimes since 2016.

We have a government that campaigned during the election to Get Brexit Done, a cabinet stuffed with Brexiteers advised by Dominic Cummings, the chief architect of Vote Leave, and we're heading for an extreme version of Brexit with a no-deal exit from the EU. And the police very conveniently drop an investigation into illegal behaviour by the Vote Leave campaign. Even Chaddy might see the connection through the Brexit mist.
