  1. This is not a knee-jerk thread. Anyone who posts that is just being plain lazy... - 1 win in the last 8. - 6 points from 24. - A mini crisis mid-season. - A manager making the same mistakes week in week out and sticking with what has worked in the past. No imagination - even in tough away games. - Players who are playing way below what we believe they are capable of. Players who should be in League One still. Not looking like a team and in fact starting to look jaded with the same League One set up but without the results in the Championship. We are not yet, in the main, talking about Mowbray being sacked. He has goodwill/loyalty credit from last season that is quickly running out. He has taken down once already on this division - whether his fault or not - and “here we go again” may well be in the minds of the players. Can he bring in a striker on loan so that the Brereton experiment can be taken right back to basics (while Nuttall is loaned out)? Can he find a way of balancing a midfield pairing which isn’t solely being deployed to protect a poor defence? Is Lenihan up to it? Is his coaching team running out of new ideas? Is it responding to what is happening on match days and looking at the personnel, formation and attitude/approach to games? Or is it just a case of “working hard in training” and hoping that the results come. What do people feel should be Mowbray’s target for the next 6 games? 10 games? Do we need a change in personnel down at Brockhall? How long does the patience last with Mowbray? Will we accept relegation and give him another go at promotion from League One? (I certainly wouldn’t). When does concern become a need for a change of manager? Rodwell has come in after being made a scapegoat at a freefalling Sunderland? They changed manager and things didn’t change. Do we need to get someone like Coleman in here and bomb Rodwell out of the club before we reach the same stage? (Leopards don’t usually change their spots - although he was harshly treated, his attitude was still very selfish - and non-team focussed. This kind of thing filters between clubs and there will be people wary of him, I’m sure. The team spirit that was such a feature of Mowbray’s team appears to have faded during the time he has been here. Coincidence?) Anyway, here we are. What do we change and when?
  2. Just watched the second episode of “Sunderland til I Die” (I’m a bit behind - sorry @Bigdoggsteel) and it’s quite fascinating. It included an interesting exchange between Chief Exec, Martin Bain, and the Youth Academy Manager, Jimmy Sinclair. The discussion was around the value of players on and off the field and came in the wake of huge net losses on player transfers. Sinclair is making a proposal: “....the club’s last 40 signings only three have yielded a profit for the club. So what I’m suggesting or advocating is that - and this might sound fanciful - 75% of the first-team pool should be under 25. That would leave a manager with the potential to play six players in his starting 11 who are older than 25. So any manager can’t say you’re asking me to win the league with kids. They become assets; we are testing our best young talents rather than playing with players that will get us better results but no end product for the club I think the only question marks you would have would be if they can make the challenge without embarrassing us too much. I think it would be healthier for the club, healthier for the young players and cheaper.” This is an interesting peek into the pressures of delivering player value, something which the Ben Brereton thread is nudging as a theme but I feel deserves seperate discussion. It’s hardly a stretch to think that similar discussions have been, and continue to be, had at Rovers and that much of our problems are down to the need to manage the return on investment of players vs buying players who can make an impact now. I think it is a very dangerous game to bring in too many youngsters and Sinclair’s suggestion of 75% is too many. 25% would be better. However, looking at Rovers current squad, 13 out of 22 are under 25, or 60%. Is this a big reason for our lack of prospects and is Mowbray going to struggle for a couple of seasons - assuming we aren’t relegated first? Secondly, if we are to realise the value of buying and developing young players then they need to be sold around 25 or 26 years old or earlier if necessary. Dack would likely be a player who will go first (stating the bleeding obvious). Here is our squad / ages:
  3. Before the last couple of weeks, it seemed like whenever I found myself in conversation about the Rovers and their start back in the Championship, I'd invariably end up saying something along the lines of, "it is really good to see the players working hard right through each game to get something out." I'd sometimes even remark about the apparent new and revived spirit throughout the way we played, which had taken root in our League 1 adventure. We were now, I'd go on, normally a team that would keep battling and battling until every final whistle... So, now that we are seeing stories in the local rag about players blaming each other for the gutless displays served up at knobend and piesville athletic, I am wondering what has happened for what seemed to be shaping up to be a cohesive and tenacious team, to now have the resolve and confidence of a bunch of 9 year olds versus dads. Any ideas? Has the spirit just drained away? Are we such a bunch of nomark primadonnas that whatever was there before was actually just an illusion? Will we ever get or mojo back? Thoughts??
  4. According to TM 'the recruitment plan is in overdrive' so I thought it deserved a topic of its own. We recruited extremely well during the summer I trust Mowbray will do the same come January but I think the key to it being considered a succes would be if we a re able to keep the big guns off dack and keep him motivated to be a Blackburn Rovers player. I reckon a centre back and a left back so bennet can be utilsed further up the field.
  5. With the debate on the QPR thread thought I would give Loots his own thread. Comments on the blue and amber thread suggest they had reservations on his kicking and coming for crosses but a good shot stopper.
  6. I’ve just read on Facebook that he’s signed for our academy after joining from Liverpool. He’s been tagged as the Irish Messi and was at Barca before joining Liverpool. Anyone else heard anything about him joining? He’s still only 15 so definitely one for the future but he was hyped up as some sort of Wonderkid a few years ago.
  7. This is probably worth a poll as it represents a huge shift in how people can watch Rovers. Rough estimates suggest about 10 of the 23 HOME games will not be at 3pm on a Saturday and so will be available for free on the Red-Button. That is an unprecedented number of 'Live on SKY' games for Rovers fans. Mr Waggott was in the LT flagging it up as a concern, and he claims he's always looking for feedback from supporter groups (and this forum is one) so if would be remiss of us not to oblige him. So, basically, will the Red-Button have any impact on whether you buy a Season-Ticket next season? The poll is anonymous. Mods - could you pin-it please?
  8. Guardian article on Ben Thornley today, a Manu youngster in the early 90's. Its claimed that he was the best of his generation---better than Giggs or Scholes or Beckham. His career was ended by an horrendous tackle by Marker in a reserve game at Ewood Park. His knee was apparently utterly shattered and he never recovered. He did sue Rovers and Marker later and received compensation. Don't remember hearing about this at the time. I remember that generally Marker was an excellent back-up in midfield. When we played Spurs at White Hart Lane they were totally confident of winning easily as we our usual central midfielders were out with injury. In fact, Marker and Atkins ran the game and we won comfortably! However, Marker was a dirty sod and ended Ardilles' season when he played against us for Plymouth. Can't give a link but its easily found on the Guardian site.
  9. Anyone know where he is? Pretty sure he hasn't been in the dugout for our last 2 or 3 games.
  10. As I've seen a few posts relating to this in the match thread, rather than taking that too much off topic, I thought the subject deserved its own thread (even if it is a little late as the season is well underway)..... Personally, whilst fundamentally, there isn't much to fear in this division, I think any talk of promotion THIS SEASON is unrealistic. While I'd hope that would be the ultimate goal for the club, to be honest, with the squad we have, I think a mid table finish would be about par for the course this term. Mostly because, at the bottom of the table there are some poor sides that already look like they could potentially be getting cut adrift. Anyhow, I'd be interested to hear everyone else's views on the subject!
  11. It would seem that the nobbers are turning against their ageing, billionaire owner Trevor Hemmings. The general feeling seems to be that having bought the club cheaply from the fans (by threatening administration if shareholders didn't accept 5p per share), Hemmings used the club for his own ends (tax purposes, soft loans), used the fans to help get planning permission for a training ground and houses - now houses to be built, training ground not so certain). It seems clear that Hemmings is getting ready to sell the club, but the talk is he wants £70m+ for it. We are all too aware what can happen when results deteriorate as a direct result of the owners of a football club. What next for Pne ? Could be interesting.
  12. Are they down? Personally I think dyche will do enough to save them. What do you think?
  13. Because of Williams' injury , Bell finally got the run of starts that a few of us had been waiting eagerly for. Now that Williams back to full fitness, do you think that Bell has done enough to keep his place? I don't go to games so I know in the eyes of some that precludes me from having an opinion on it. Fair enough, to a degree, but regular game-goers, what's your take on it? However, going on the games I've seen online, I think Bell has done enough to warrant his continued presence in the starting 11. I thought he looked a threat when he was pushed further up the field after Williams came on. My caveat here is that I didn't see a kick of the Bristol City capitulation, so I honestly don't know how he performed there.
  14. I'm thinking about buying this shirt but it has the gold writing underneath it, "PREMIER LEAGUE CHAMPIONS". Was this shirt worn the season after we won the league?? Is it a real shirt? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/323437626520
  15. Might be a good time, for those who use social media, to offer messages of encouragement to Gladwin. He certainly had the right qualities and skills at one point. If he could find his way back then he might be another welcome addition to the first team. I'm sure he gets loads of encouragement from TM and his staff but haven't seen much in the form of encouragement from Rovers' supporters. If he and Rodwell could be rehabilitated, it would make for a powerful team. Just a thought.
  16. Everybody is very opinionated on here. People are quick to give opinions and not so quick to admit they were wrong. Its now time to own up to opinions you had which have been proven to be incorrect. I'n recent times, my two biggies are:- * Raya will not be good enough to be a number one. We'd have been better keeping Simon Eastwood. * Downing's signing is a knee jerk reaction and will be of no benefit to this club whatsoever. Anyone else want to confess?
  17. Given the changes ,due to injuries and a thin squad,a really great result. If additions come in and everyone is fit there are some difficult decisions. On the positive side we ought to be able to put out a strong bench, which for me is always an indicator of a good side. Most folk looking at todays selection and bench would think we were in trouble, but the effort and management got us through. Things can only improve with more availability but it will still take a fair number of games to establish a definite starting eleven. The back four just need to stay healthy and Williams is good cover. Midfield wise I suppose it's horses for courses, but it will be good to have competition. Tactics will be crucial as there are any numbert of ways to approach a game. Weseem to be a positive work in progress, and whilst no doubt there will be setbacks,it's difficult to see a starting eleven and bench as threadbare as today at 2 o clock.. The management seems to know what it's doing though, and the future looks ok. it's certainly going to be interesting, given the wide variety of opinions regarding crucial positions and tactics. What a great result today!
  18. Jack Rodwell and Harrison Reid....are very much possibilities
  19. Early days, some decent performances, but a lot of questions posed. Defensively a settled back 4 ok so far but little quality for back up. Organisation of midfiel/attack much more complicated and imo will take 10 or more games to sort, undoubtedly with some experimentation in training and games. How Mowbray sees the style and relevant make up will obviously not be to everyones liking as can be seen from the very varied opinions on here as to who to play and where. The limited resources will dictate to some extent as injuries happen. Guys like Smallwood have been criticised lately yet he was a game changer when he arrived. His distribution is poor but he contributes in a different way. Palmer talented but possibly a luxury, decent bench material at his point imo. It will take a fair few games for the likes of Travis,Rothwell,Bennett,Bell,Evans and others to nail down a position and keep it. Mowbrays thoughts , injuries, results, performances, and lady luck are the moving parts for a while. Let's all go to see the optimist for a while and enjoy a positive ride till the picture unfolds a bit more.
  20. A continuation of the Transfers/Thursday deadline thread- who would you like us to bring in on loan? Who do you expect us to bring in on loan? Be good....
  21. i was at the ipswich afternoon. the place has improved from my last visit 25 years ago. a rainy night then, a boiling afternoon now. didnt expect much, especially after the early goal but was pleasantly surprised. witnessed resilience most of all. generally decent team performance, personally liked nyambe lenihan and smallwood. palmers miss was crucial, and felt he was a bit off it.could have said he was a bit of a show pony but that would be unfair for a 20 minute game. definitely needs a bit of steel or else thats what he will turn out. hopefully wrong. a real shame about the late goal, bloody hell how many times have we said that. would have taken the point beforehand. slightly better than ipswich i felt. more about us.right winger who works hard crucial. could be transformational...again v impressed with nyambe...hope he keeps that level up. mixed up long balls and interplay and probably had a bit more success with the former. targeted their left back correctly. we should beat them at home comfortably. if i was playing we would.COYB
  22. I think they are gonna dominate for a few years now. Liverpool may offer some sort of challenge, but the others? I can't see where the competition is coming from?
  23. By popular demand, here's a new thread to discuss potential incomings and outgoings this summer. Play nicely!
  24. From solid Premier League club with little debt, to a club losing its first two games in the old third division and £100m+ in debt, closing radio rovers and staff redundancies. for Gods sake, just sell up, just go! You've failed and you're still failing.
