  1. An Assessment of Player Performance v PNE Each player was judged on the following criteria: Instance of excellent play * Instance of decent/good play * Instance of disappointing/poor play * Instance of terrible play * E&OE Ratings Raya *** Nyambe ************* Mulgrew ******************** Lenihan ********************* Williams *********** Reed(45) ***************** Smallwood(45) ******** Palmer(68) ***** Armstrong(64) ******** Bennett ************** Dack ******* Graham(45) ***** Brereton(68) *** Rothwell(64) ***** Highlights and Lowlights (A justification for the main ratings above) 1. Lenihan is caught flat-footed by Browne’s quick flick and he can’t make up the lost ground. Browne squares across the box perfectly for Barkhuizen to score! No one picked him up and it was too easy. 4. Preston corner and I swear Lenihan loses his man and has to push him to the floor. Very, very risky! Smallwood hacks clear! 5. Good grief! Williams is done on the wing, Mulgrew flicks his heel up pathetically as the ball is cut into the box again. Nyambe makes a desperate but essential deflecting challenge and we escape with a corner. It’s almost a copy of the first goal - but from the other side. The defence is a shambles! 9. Mulgrew’s headed clearance doesn’t go far and it’s headed back. Nyambe’s hurried clearance is straight to Browne and he slides the ball into the box. Nyambe loses the footrace and Robinson puts it past Raya with assurance. 10. Bennett’s cross reaches Dack 14 metres out but his header is turned round the post by the keeper. He did well to trouble the keeper from there as it came from one of Bennett’s diagonal balls….from behind him. 27. Excellent free kick from almost 25m by Mulgrew but the keeper palms it over the bar. 35. Nice ball from Bennett to a tightly marked Palmer on the edge of the D but he flicks the ball one touch to Dack’s feet. His shot from 12m out is deflected and the keeper saves. 38. Armstrong dithers on the ball in our own half…… and is dispossessed. Fortunately the Preston man mishits his pass and Smallwood retrieves the ball. HALF TIME 46. Reed’s freekick into the box and newly arrived Graham heads home! 50. Poor play by both Lenihan and Mulgrew around the box but it’s cleared. 54. A great shot out of the blue from over 30m by Bennett. It’s a wee bit too central though and the keeper beats it away. 57. Armstrong gives the ball away in a dangerous position but Mulgrew cuts out the poor cross into the box. 58. Wonderful run down the wing by Nyambe and he squares it across the box but it’s slightly behind Dack and his attempted flick is weak and off-target. 59. Sloppy play by several Rovers allows Robinson to speed past Nyambe but his shot is wide. 62. Excellent chase back and challenge by Reed to win the ball from Robinson who was clear to run on goal. 73. Barkhuizen goes to the line, past Williams far too easily, and heads into the box. He squares and the shot is deflected into the path of Moult who hammers home from close range. Reed and Mulgrew couldn’t get there in time. 75. Nice ball into the box by Reed and Graham, near the penalty spot, cushions a header to Brereton’s feet and it’s in the net. Offside…….rats! 84. Browne and Moult torment and tease four Rovers players before Moult passes to Browne who has pulled away and his half-hit volley beats Raya and nestles in the net! Reed and Williams showed no urgency in chasing back and Mulgrew and Lenihan were made to look amateurish. Raya was a bit slow to get down I think. 93. Barker beats Reed and leaves him trailing; he strolls past Lenihan as if he isn’t there into the D but his shot is weak and is deflected wide. Worst performance of the season IMHO.
  2. Blackburn Rovers returned from the international break and walked right into a fire. As Preston North End smashed the goals past them to end the match 4-1 winners. Rovers were 2 goals down after the first 10 minutes of the match then had it all to do to try and salvage anything. However despite scoring very early in the 2nd half thanks to a goal by Danny Graham, it was not mean to be as Preston added 2 more late goals to take home all three points and some local pride. In this video we hear from the Gaffa about the result and take a look at some match stats plus more. 3. Blackburn Rovers return from the international break and make the short trip to Deepdale to take on Preston North End. Blackburn Rovers come into the match on the back of a decent run, most recently a hard earned draw against Rotherham United. Preston North End meanwhile head into the match in excellent form, most recently on the back of an away win against Bristol City In this video we preview the match, get a prediction from the Cat and see a few players who have played for both Preston North End and Blackburn Rovers. 4. Blackburn Rovers will enter the international break on the back of a draw against Rotherham United. Despite dominating the match, Rovers fell behind to Rotherham who took their only real chance of the second half to take the lead. However moments later Rovers were back in the match thanks to great build up by Ben Brereton who setup Bradley Dack for his 10th goal of the season. Rovers could have scored multiple goals but will have to settle for a point. Next up Preston North End and Wigan Athletic. In this video we hear from the Gaffa Tony Mowbray about his thoughts, we take a look at the other Championship results plus much more. Rovers: Raya, Bennett (c), Lenihan, Rodwell, Bell, Reed (Nyambe, 46), Smallwood (Brereton, 76), Palmer, Dack, Armstrong, Graham (Rothwell, 76). Unused substitutes: Leutwiler, Downing, Conway, Travis. 6. An assessment of player performance v Rotherham Each player was judged on the following criteria: Instance of excellent play * Instance of decent/good play * Instance of disappointing/poor play * Instance of terrible play * E&OE Ratings Raya ***** Bennett ************************ Lenihan(9) *************************** Rodwell ************** Bell ************************* Reed(45) ******** Smallwood *********************** Palmer *************** Armstrong *************************** Dack ****************** Graham(58) **************** Nyambe(45) ************** Brereton(76) ** Rothwell(76) ***** Highlights and Lowlights (A justification for the main ratings above) 2. A beautiful teasing ball to the far post from Bennett is pushed behind for a corner. 7. A long throw into the Rovers box and Lenihan is outjumped. As the ball falls Graham hacks clear. The ball comes back into the box, this time Graham tangles unsuccessfully with Smith and the ricochet lands right at Newell’s feet. Fortunately Lenihan gets a block in and it’s a corner. The Rotherham men surround Raya. OHHHHH! The corner sails over most of our defenders and stays close to the posts as a Rotherham man heads wide from very close range. It looks like Lenihan lost his man but my view isn’t great. That was a let off. The overall organisation was rubbish. 9. Bell fails to prevent the cross but Raya comes and collects at the second attempt. 13. Sloppy pass from Bennett on the edge of the box puts Smallwood under pressure but two crunching tackles later and Smallwood lays off a nice square ball to Dack and suddenly defence becomes attack. Bell takes the ball on and feeds Armstrong. He dribbles in and out of the box before miscuing his shot behind for a goalkick. Ritchie’s name echoes round Ewood! 15. The defender miscontrols and Graham is on it. He squares to Dack who threads a lovely ball into the box and Graham has the keeper to beat. But, exactly as in the first minute against QPR last week, he goes for placement instead of power and the keeper has time to get a glove on it! At least this time he was offside (Dack held on a fraction too long probably). 16. Hmm, for the second time in a minute, Rodwell fails to dominate in the air. Here a long throw comes into the box and although Rodwell attacks the ball his header falls just outside the D and Towell’s shot lands on the roof of the net. Close. 18. A beautiful long ball from Armstrong cuts out the defender and Bell races after it, into the box. His shot is on target but hits the keeper’s leg and balloons to Dack on the penalty spot but he miscues his shot. 23. This is ridiculous! For the third time a long throw into the box causes mayhem! Rodwell loses his man, the ball is bouncing around Lenihan twice tries and fails to head clear and Smallwood half clears. It’s a corner. What is going on! The organisation for these set pieces is non-existent. As the ball comes in, Lenihan, Rodwell and Bell all run away from where the ball has been directed. They try to backpedal but ……..too late…..Smith has been left totally unmarked. He heads it back beautifully across the face of goal to the unmarked Mattock. Fortunately he is a worse header of the ball than I am and he puts it over! WHAT A LET OFF! Both Mattock and Wood were totally unmarked throughout that whole situation! Graham wasn’t covering his man either. 26. A lovely turn and run by Palmer who feeds Bennett. His cross is punched into the air by the goalie and Armstrong wins a corner. 33. Bell plays a nice ball into the left corner for Smallwood who holds off his man well. He feeds Armstrong who cuts neatly between 2 defenders into the box. His shot hits the bar! 35. Some nice inter-passing. Smallwood to Bell who slides the ball into the box for Graham to chase. Bell is getting more involved in the attacks. 41. A low, flat corner by Reed is met by Dack but his shot is blocked. 42. Bell, under no pressure, heads his clearance into the danger area just outside the D but Dack protects the ball and Reed hoofs clear. Armstrong shows great persistence to retrieve the ball but his attempted crosses come to naught. 44. Smallwood is continuing to call the shots in midfield. He’s had a good half so far. Rodwell’s coming into the game more too. 46. Two meaty challenges from Bennett as he wins the ball high up the field but Smallwood’s cross is cut out. HALF TIME 45. A 1-2 between Armstrong and Graham, then Armstrong slides the ball to Dack in the box and he sets it up for Graham but his tame shot fails to beat the keeper again. 48. Bell’s nice long pass is controlled by Armstrong who squares to Bennett and his shot from distance is parried away by the diving keeper. 52. Sloppy work in our D and Bennett is dispossessed, Nyambe blocks the shot. The cross comes in, Bell’s challenge is ineffective and Smith’s shot hits Lenihan on the line! 53. Armstrong lobs a ball square into the box to Graham wide of the far post. He heads it back towards goal but no one is there to challenge and the defender heads off the line under no pressure. 54. Good pressure now and Lenihan plays a 1-2 with Nyambe and then fizzes the ball across the face of goal; the keeper can’t hold it and the defender hoofs it away for a corner. 55. Bell withstands a challenge and tees up Smallwood who fires in a low shot, Dack tries to deflect it but the ball is cleared. Nyambe comes back nicely and slips the ball into the box for Graham but his attempt is blocked and it goes for a Rovers throw. Nyambe is making a difference. 58. A lovely 1-2 between Nyambe and Palmer sees Nyambe reach the touchline and put over a great cross but Graham is outnumbered and the ball is cleared. 60. Another nice bit of skill as Nyambe skips past the full back from a throw in but his cross is intercepted. 63. Another dizzying run into the box by Nyambe but there’s too many defenders in front of him his shot is blocked and cleared; it comes back and Armstrong flicks a lovely ball into the box for Bell but he passes straight to the keeper. He did well to get on the end of the pass though. Dack is fed up, he was waiting for the cross! Rodwell is done by Smith but his shot is ambitious and wide. 64. Graham heads Raya’s long punt to Armstrong on the wing. He delivers the perfect ball to Dack in the D. Dack beats 2 defenders brilliantly but his shot hits the keeper’s legs. Smallwood wins the ball back bravely and eventually we get a corner. 65. Another nice move. Bell skips past defenders on the wing and squares to Dack who manages to hold off a couple of defenders before feeding Nyambe. Another cross into the danger zone from him but it doesn’t find a teammate. Nyambe has opened a whole new dimension of attack on the right wing. Not to be outdone, Armstrong controls the long pass and does the full back on the touchline…..squaring the perfect ball across the face of goal 2 metres out. There’s no one there!! 70. A lovely diagonal ball from Bennett to Graham at the far post. He gets there but he’s under pressure and his header passes across the face of goal. Danny stays down injured. 73. Dear dear; another of those seemingly innocuous lazy passes ……..going astray and leading to disaster. This time it’s Bennett giving it away close to the box (for the THIRD time this game!) The winger does Bell too easily and the cross is headed home by Smith. Raya seems to dive late and Smith is too good for Lenihan and Nyambe in the air. 75. Taylor gets away from Lenihan on halfway and it’s dangerous. But Rodwell is able to get a foot in as Rotherham stumble. 78. Armstrong sprints past 2 defenders and is into the box. His shot is palmed into the air by the keeper and Nyambe’s header is off target but goes for a corner. Where did Nyambe come from? 80. Brereton leaps on to Bennett’s deflected cross in the box and squares to Dack to score from 2 metres. 84. A lackadaisical Bell gives the ball away near the corner flag and the deflected cross is gathered by Raya. 86. Lenihan slips a nice pass through to Dack on the edge of the box. He leaves it for Palmer but his shot is way off target. 92. Rothwell puts a nice ball through for Armstrong into the box but the challenge comes in and it’s a corner. 93. Bennett heads the ball into the box but it comes back, he slips the ball to his left and unleashes a powerful shot but it’s deflected just over for a corner. The ball is bobbling about and Armstrong spins and shoots but it’s well off target.

    Time wasting

A few weeks ago I read that a top flight game between Burnley and Cardiff had the ball in play for a grand total of 40 something minutes. Today, Rotherham came and wasted as much time as possible to the point that it's not a tactic but embarrising. Is it time to review the laws on time wasting and what do people suggest for changes to the game regarding this issue. Something has to be done. It's just not acceptable
  8. An assessment of player performance v QPR Each player was judged on the following criteria: Instance of excellent play * Instance of decent/good play * Instance of disappointing/poor play * Instance of terrible play * E&OE Ratings Leutwiler ** Bennett **************** Lenihan ********************** Williams ********************** Bell ******************** Reed *********************** Smallwood(62) ************** Evans *********************** Armstrong(79) ******************* Dack. ************** Graham(73) *********** Palmer(62) ****** Rothwell(73) *** Brereton(79) **** Highlights and Lowlights (A justification for the main ratings above) 0. The ball falls to Graham’s feet in the 6 yard box but, with just the keeper to beat, he goes for placement instead of power and the shot isn’t good enough and it’s saved. Bad miss! 13. Well, I suppose I should write something but there’s not a lot happening. Williams is looking composed, Dack has been throwing himself around enthusiastically, Lenihan has just won another header and Bell has been rounded again. Armstrong wins the ball and outsprints 2 defenders as he runs the length of the pitch but he’s dispossessed by the third. 28. Commentator lamenting that “there’s nothing to write home about in this game so far!” How right he is! 34. At last! Neat footwork from Evans and good hold up play from Graham. Evans then sends a lovely ball down the wing for Armstrong to chase. He teases the defender on the edge of the box until Bell hares forward to receive the ball. Bell falls under the challenge….no penalty, just a corner. 36. Reed slips the ball through for Graham who lays it off square to Bell. Bell’s cross is dangerous but Armstrong fails to connect. Bennett crosses again but it’s cleared. Williams puts it back in the box but it’s overhit; it falls to Bennett but his cross is deflected. Good spell of pressure but no serious goal threat in truth. It’s a corner. Reed takes and Graham flicks it on. Williams can’t quite get there. 40. Long hopeful ball played into our box and Smallwood makes a real hash of his attempted headed clearance. It falls to a QPR man right in front of goal but his shot is wide! He should have buried it! 44. Dominant headed clearance by Williams and eventually the ball comes to Armstrong who spins beautifully to beat his man and he’s haring down the field again. He rides another challenge and lays it off to Bell but QPR have too many back and Bell is squeezed off the pitch for a throw in. 45. Rovers work the ball down the centre of the field with a series of first-time touches, Williams to Smallwood to Dack, who with the lightest of flicks puts Graham through. He’s challenged in the box and he puts it wide. Good chance! Reed slips a nice ball to Dack who takes it on and feeds Armstrong on the wing. He beats his man and puts a good cross to the near post for Reed but his effort is cleared. 45+1. A neat 1-2 between Bennett and Reed sets Bennett up for the cross but Graham can only head it straight up in the air and the keeper collects. Half-time. 46. Neat interplay between Smallwood, Reed and Dack allows Dack to send a beautiful crossfield ball to Armstrong’s feet. Unfortunately Bell and Armstrong mess around with the ball and the chance is lost! Evans wins the ball in midfield but, for the third time in a minute, Armstrong is disappointing and his attempted chip runs for a goal kick. 48. More neat stuff between Smallwood, Bell, Graham and Armstrong. Eventually Armstrong drives to the line and wins a corner. 49. Williams heads on Bennett’s long ball and Dack is on to it in the box but he’s under pressure. Twice he tries to get a shot away but both times he is blocked. Reed fires in the rebound but again it’s blocked and runs for a throw-in. 50. Armstrong anticipates Bell’s quick throw and lobs a nice ball into the box but Graham is outjumped. 56. Blimey Smallwood is treading water here as the QPR man leaves him for dead! Yay!…..I get to note a positive for Leutwiler as he opts to come to the edge of his box to clear up, putting the ball out for a throw. QPR are doing everything they can to waste time. 62. Armstrong whips in a low bobbling cross that fools almost everyone but Lynch wakes up in time to hack clear! 68. Palmer is chasing back, covering Bennett, but can’t prevent the cross. It’s dangerous but Williams gets there first; his header hits Lenihan and the ball whistles past the post for a corner! L and W high-five each other! 69. Palmer is too casual and is dispossessed in the centre circle but Reed gets a foot in to help. Now Bell is dawdling about and loses the ball! Now Evans gives it away! 71. Good tracking back by Palmer but it’s a corner. The QPR players have all been taking “how to walk really slowly” lessons! It’s a low cross and an unmarked Wells smashes a first time shot on target but somehow Williams manages to get his head in the way. It was travelling! As the ball comes back in, Williams is there to head clear again. 74. A very nice move by QPR from one end of the pitch to the other. Bennett justs gets enough pressure on Eze in the box to put him off his shot. 76. For the second time in a minute, Evans gives the ball away. It’s dangerous as Luongo drives past Bell far too easily…..but Reed cuts out the cross into the box. Bell is having a stinker. 83. Tired, terrible ball to no one from Evans! 84. Tremendously persistent work by Bennett under pressure and he manages to flick the ball neatly to Brereton down the wing, He drives into the box and goes down easily when challenged. Penalty. You want to know why Bennett is important to the team? Watch this replay! Dack puts it away easily. 90. Bell heads the QPR throw straight into the middle of our box!! Fortunately Bennett is there to boot clear! 91. Rothwell pumps a nice first time ball forward for Brereton to chase. He drives into the box; the defender gets a foot in and it runs for a corner.
  9. Blackburn Rovers are back at Ewood Park this weekend as they look for back to back wins in the league this time against Rotherham United. Rovers come into the match fresh off the back of a last minute winner against Queens Park Rangers. ROVERS v qpr

Put your bitching, moans, hissy fits and occasional comments on the football in here. This is the game we finally beat someone by more than 1 goal. Rovers 2 QPR 0 12,220
  11. Blackburn Rovers picked up a valuable win at Ewood Park against a resurgent Queens Park Rangers. The only goal of the game came from the spot after Ben Brereton was fouled and with Charlie Mulgrew out of action the responsibility was placed on the shoulders of Bradley Dack to score which he did. Besides that the game offered little opportunities for either side, QPR will feel a little hard done by as they were so close to sealing an valueable away point. Next up for Rovers another home match this time against Rotherham United. As for QPR they head back to Loftus Road for Brentford. In this video we get words from the gaffa (and fireworks), plus some match analysis. Rovers: Leutwiler, Bennett (c), Lenihan, Williams, Bell, Evans, Smallwood (Palmer, 63), Reed, Dack, Armstrong (Brereton, 80), Graham (Rothwell, 74). 12. Blackburn Rovers are back at Ewood Park this weekend as they look to bag a win against red hot Queens Park Rangers. Rovers come into the match fresh off the back of a hard earned point against West Bromwich Albion in game that saw us lose David Raya that resulted in us playing the last 20 minutes with Richie Smallwood in goal. As for QPR they are the in form team in the league, they come into this match on the back of a win against Aston Villa. In this video I speak with Julie Hampton a HUGE Queens Park Rangers supporter who talks up QPR's chances against Rovers, their prospects for the season and more. 13. An assessment of player performance v West Brom Each player was judged on the following criteria: Instance of excellent play * Instance of decent/good play * Instance of disappointing/poor play * Instance of terrible play * E&OE Ratings Whoscored.com ratings Raya ******** 6.8 Bennett ***************** 7.2 Rodwell(57) ********* 6.4 Mulgrew(14) * 6.3! Williams ************** 7.7 Reed ********************** 8.0 MoM Smallwood ********************* 7.3 Rothwell ************** 6.6 Conway ***************** 6.7 Palmer(66) ******************* 6.6! Dark ******* 6.6 Bell(14) *********** 6.5 Travis(57) ******* 6.1 Armstrong(66) *** 5.9 Highlights and Lowlights (A justification for the main ratings above) 3. Palmer and Bennett are both done by Townsend, Bennett just gets back to put a foot in to deflect the cross. Williams and Conway clear up. 4. Rovers free kick Rothwell is dispossessed when most of his teammates are still in the box. It’s dangerous as Sako goes past Reed and Rothwell again. Some ping pong before Townsend shoots straight at Raya. 14. More bad news. Mulgrew injured. Bell on. 15. Poor attempted header by Rodwell on the wing presents the ball perfectly to Barnes who steams straight past him to the touchline but Reed is there to block his cross and it’s cleared. 23. Lovely through ball from Palmer to Conway after beating his man. Conway has to turn back but eventually gets his chance to cross but it’s poor. 25. Sako beats Smallwood and Bennett twice. Palmer is there to make the important tackle. 26. Rothwell’s been having a difficult time so far. Here he drives to the edge of the box but straight into 3 defenders and he’s dispossessed again. He has to pass there. 29. More ping pong from a West Brom throw in. Conway gets in a good block, Bell is indecisive, Smallwood heads back into danger, Raya flaps and Williams kicks out of play. 31. Controversy! Reed drives into the box beating 2 men brilliantly and as he squares the ball, the defender slides in and blocks the cross with his hands. No penalty! Robbery! 32. The Gods make amends. Williams gives the ball straight to Rodriguez who has a clean run at goal. Raya saves well from 12 yards and unbelievably, with the keeper on the ground, Rodriquez puts the rebound over the bar. It was easier to score! 38. Bennett and Raya mess up a back-pass and clearance and the ball comes straight back into the box. Bennett hares back to take the ball off the attacker’s foot before he can shoot. From the corner Dawson destroys Bell in the air and it’s 1-0. All because of that dumb back-pass! 41. Dack receives a low clearance, spins and loses his man and lays a beautiful ball through for Rothwell. He takes it on and from 10 yards he’s only got the goalie to beat. But it’s saved! Rothwell made a great run but he should have scored! 45+2 Bennett loses a challenge high up the park and Barnes takes it on, beating Reed, then Smallwood and Reed again. Smallwood brings him down 25 yards out. The free kick is well over the bar. HALF_TIME 46. Palmer receives just outside the D, he’s tackled and falls over, then gets up leaves his tackler behind, sweeps into the box avoiding another defender but blazes the ball over the bar! 47. Smallwood wins the ball and lays a lovely ball to Conway who’s cross is disappointing but it’s a corner. It’s taken short and Rothwell drives to the box but his cross/shot is awful! 49. Bennett is the last man back to cut out the cross for a corner. Raya comes and misses the ball, the West Brom man has pulled away from Rodwell, but he heads over. Lucky! 50. Sako fools 3 Rovers defenders but Rodwell gets back to slide in with an effective challenge. Bell defends well on the far post and Raya holds on to the final shot. 51. Rodwell is too casual allowing a dangerous cross which almost finds Rodriquez at the far post. 52. Smallwood stumbles high upfield and West Brom stream forward. Reed chases back well and almost gets in a challenge but in the end the attackers stuff up and Smallwood is there to make amends and see the ball go behind for a goal kick. 61. Controversy 2. Rothwell wins the ball 30 yards out and feeds Palmer. He wriggles into the box and beats THREE defenders before he’s brought down in the 6 yard box. No penalty! Robbery2. 64. At last a good run and cross from Conway and Dack controls on the penalty spot but he stumbles and the chance is lost. Conway has run all the way back to dispossess the attacker near our own box. Impressive! 66. Palmer receives the ball centrally, spins and drives past 2 defenders but they bring him down for a free kick 25 yards out. Well you’ll have to explain that to me Tony!!! Palmer is off for Armstrong. Palmer is the Man of the Match for me! Great free kick from Dack. Just wide! 69. Lovely ball slipped through by Smallwood to Bennett who takes it to the line. His square ball is cut out at the post for a corner. 70. Rothwell gets a foot in and the ball comes to Reed out wide. He moves inside a little before launching an unstoppable 25 yard curler into the top right hand corner. Great goal! 74. Two terrible passes in the last minute from Smallwood and then Conway! The last one allowed Rodriguez a shot at goal 75. Rodriguez attacks again, Bennett gets a foot in but the ball slides to Townsend in the box……he is free and clear until Williams comes sliding across the face of goal to put his body on the line. Great stop! Reed clears. 77. Rodriguez nutmegs Travis on the edge of the box. Raya is out fast to collect but his trailing foot smashes Raya in the face. Smallwood volunteers to take on the keeper duties! 85. Everybody back behind the ball! 88. Best moment of the match! Bennett’s loose header allows West Brom to lob the ball into the box and a flying Richie Smallwood runs out to gather. The crowd erupts! 93. Unbelievable! Morrison lobs a cross to the far post where Kanu heads goalwards from 6 yards. Travis and Williams block it and the point blank follow-up shot exactly on the line! Brilliant! Conway kicks clear. 97. Full time: heroic performance!

WBA VS ROVERS - SAT 27TH

A return for fan favourite Tony Mowbray to The Hawthorns, home of West Bromwich Albion. As far as West Bromwich goes it's just off the M5 with not much else except the "Baggies" to talk about. I'm sure we are all aware of Sir Tony's success at this club so it should be a rapturous reception for the boss. Unlike the horrid journey to Swansea last night this one is quite easy, save the roadworks. It should take about 2 and a half hours and the Hawthorns ground is fairly decent as far as away ends go. It's been a while since we last played WBA. 2012 to be exact with a team that included the likes of Gamst Pedersen, NZonzi but also the likes of Lowe, Modeste and Goodwille. The dark days we shall call it. On that occasion we lost 3-0 and the cretin that is Liam Ridgewell scored against us - a man that has played for every Midlands club there is and once wiped his arse with pound notes. I haven't been the Hawthorns personally since 2008. That day McCarthy opened the scoring before being sent off; it all looked doom and gloom until the man, the myth, the legend that is Keith Andrews popped up with a long range equaliser minutes from time. This team consisted of the likes of Nelsen, Samba, Tugay, McCarthy and.....................Vince Grella. Fuck. Fun fact: The Baggies design their home kits based on Tesco carrier bags. Overall we tend to have the beating of West Brom. We've lost 44, won 52 and drawn 29. With both teams scoring and conceding goals for fun the Saturday game should be full of action - queue 0-0. As I write this Frank Lampard's Derby are giving Baggies a spanking at home. So it looks like both sides will be going into the game on the back of defeats - with both having something to prove it will all come down to which defence leaks the least. With the injury to Lenihan it leaves us looking to the likes of Rodwell or Downing for a right footed centre half. Playing Williams will essentially mean an unorthodox centre half partnership of two left footers (can you name a famous partnership comprising of two left footers??). The current West Brom squad has the likes of Dwight Gayle - who loves to score against Rovers - Burke, Sako and Harvey Barnes. They all take it in turns to bed bath Hoolahan, Barry, Mears and Boaz Myhill. Currently managed by the extremely likeable chap Darren Moore. Ultimately though this team still has the stamp of a negative Pulis and the "play from the back" style football Moore is trying to promote isn't possible with the lumbering centre halves Henghazi and Kyle Bartley. If we can get at them up the pitch we have the pace to close down the dinosaurs and force mistakes. There's also a dingle that plays up front for them. He's also racist....if you believe the papers. The unwashed tried to sign him in the summer but couldn't afford him after spending the budget on paper clips to file all the rejected offers - no surprise there. The Championship seems his level though and I have no doubt all his relatives and lovers have been sending telegrams all week getting him up for the game. Be sure to boo him, call him a dingle and make his afternoon utterly miserable. That'll be a nice sideshow. As a final note: Tony Mowbray's Blue & White Army.
  15. Blackburn Rovers held on for dear life as they managed to take away an unlikely point in a match that had pretty much everything. Penalty claim ✅ Poor Defending ✅ Long range wonder striker ✅ Smallwood in goal ✅ (wait what?) Thats right Richard Smallwood had to go between the sticks to help rescue a point as David Raya was struck in the face by Jay Rodriguez. At that point the match was level at 1-1. Before that West Brom took the lead through some shoddy defense by Rovers which lead to a corner and goal by Dawson. Rovers entered the 2nd half with more attacking gumpf and with continued pressing eventually took the lead through Harrison Reed who was by far the best player on the pitch. Then the drama with Raya and Smallwood made for an exhilarating match which we held on for a point. West Brom will be kicking themselves as they missed the chance to go away with all 3 points. Later on the channel a more detailed review of the match including words from the gaffa. Fancy some more? 16. An assessment of player performance v Swansea Each player was judged on the following criteria: Instance of excellent play * Instance of decent/good play * Instance of disappointing/poor play * Instance of terrible play * E&OE Ratings Whoscored.com ratings Raya ******* 4.9 Bennett ************************ 6.2 Lenihan(9) * 6.3! Mulgrew ************** 6.6 Bell ********** 6.1 Reed **************** 6.4 Smallwood **************** 6.2 Evans(71) ***************** 7.0 Armstrong *********** 5.8 Dack ************ 6.1 Graham(58) **** 6.5 Rodwell(9) *********** 6.6 Brereton(58) ******* 6.1 Rothwell(71) **** 5.9 Highlights and Lowlights (A justification for the main ratings above) 6. So far, so good. Rovers pressing well and Reed has had more than twice as many good touches as any other player! 9. Bennett has to sprint back having been caught out of position but Celina waltzes round him effortlessly. Fortunately his shot is over the bar. Bad news; Lenihan injured! 16. Rovers knocking the ball about nicely all over the park but then Evans’ pass is intercepted and it’s all for naught! Here come Swansea and Olsson beats Rodwell and fires over a dangerous cross. Mulgrew blocks the final shot. Amazing……we were passing the ball about nicely – looking good, but in truth, didn’t look like posing any threat – then one mistake and they almost score! Bennett had been left upfield again! Raya catches the corner. 24. Nice long pass by Evans in midfield to Armstrong on the wing. He drives forward and feeds Bell on the overlap in the box. He beats his man but is brought down. Penalty! Mulgrew stutters his run and expertly sends the keeper the wrong way. Beautiful! 32. The only time we’re getting into the box is when Bennett launches one of his long diagonal balls. This one is underhit. Bennett and Reed are both caught deep in the Swansea half as Olsson attacks. Evans does well to hold him up but he is beaten by a 1-2 and the dangerous cross is headed straight up in the air by McBurnie. Raya lets it bounce!!!!! We get lucky and Raya collects! 33. Celina beats Bennett, Reed and Smallwood but Mulgrew steps in decisively to intercept his pass. 41. Bennett is haring back again after mis-adventuring upfield but, in desperation, he fells the Swansea guy and is booked. He redeems himself somewhat by heading away the free-kick; Grimes is there to volley the ball just wide. 48. James leaves Smallwood trailing and eases past Bennett as he drives into the box. Rodwell blocks his shot! Impressive run! It’s not clear yet though and Celina and James combine again but James shot is mishit and over the stand! 50. James does Bennett again but his cross is collected easily by Raya. 54. Swansea playing with some style at the moment. Reed fluffs his challenge, the ball is crossed square along the edge of the box but Celina hits it over the bar. Phew! 62. Bennett wins the ball well and feeds Armstrong who plays a neat 1-2 with Dack but the final cross from Armstrong is disappointing. 63. Nice turn into the box by Brereton but his final ball to Dack is just too far. 64. A good long ball cuts straight through our midfield. Fulton gathers, moves forward to just outside the D and his powerful shot hits the post and bounces in off Raya. Here’s what I think! Rodwell, stood 2 yards in front of Fulton, flinched. Lenihan doesn’t do that! Commentators think no one is at fault though. 66. Nice pass from Evans to Dack in the centre circle. He drives towards the edge of the box and lays the ball to Reed but his cross is poor. Brereton was in a good position. 67. James doing what Armstrong can’t. Using his pace to gallop through midfield, no one lays a glove on him, Bennett can’t match him for speed and he slips a lovely pass to Roberts, who avoids Bell’s weak attempt at a challenge and smoothly puts the ball past Raya. Again no one is taking charge in the centre of our half. 70. Poor pass by Brereton leaves Evans short and Swansea attack from their own D. James does Mulgrew for pace and his shot touches the outside of the post! 75. Good grief! Again, no one tracking James as he chases a square ball into the box. It’s deflected by Rodwell on to the bar for a corner. Smallwood didn’t seem to notice James sliding behind him. 76. A few poor kicks from Raya today. This free-kick goes straight into touch! 80. Swansea are giving Rovers a bit of a lesson here! This time Celina and James combine together again. We just can’t handle them. James crosses square to McBurnie one yard out but Mulgrew is there to save us again. Bennett was done for pace again and Rodwell seemed lost. 81. Nice sets of passes, Reed to Dack to Rothwell to Armstrong who crosses long to Bennett (where did he come from?) who does well to get in a half-volley from the corner of the 6 yard box but it’s saved. 83. An accurate long ball from Rodwell reaches Brereton in the box. He controls well, holding off the defender but his attempted shot is deflected for a corner. Dack wasn’t far from reaching it! 84. Reed lashes a loose ball into the box. Dack leaps on to the rebound and his first time shot from just inside the box is well saved low down by the keeper. Oh dear! While the camera concentrates on a tearful Dack, Swansea put the ball in the net at the other end! Bennett and Smallwood haven’t got the pace and we are carved open down the middle again. 89. Another positive drive down the wing from Brereton but there’s no support again and he has to lay it back. 91. Rothwell loses the ball too easily again! 94. Full time. Bristol City re-visited? I think it was hard to apportion blame for a lot of our mistakes but I did my best.
  17. Blackburn Rovers head back on the road once again this weekend to take on high flyers West Bromwich Albion in the 2018-19 Sky Bet Championship. Rovers come into the match on the back of a away defeat to Swansea City. Meanwhile West Brom also come into the match on the back of a heavy home defeat to Derby County after losing on Wednesday night 1-4. Rovers may have to freshen up the squad for this match, and may look to replace Lenihan in defense after he picked up a knock last time out. Will be able to grab something special this weekend at the Hawthornes or will be a happier day for the hosts? 18. Rovers take on the recently relegated Swansea who are managed by Graham Potter. Swansea’s form is average, losing to Dean Smiths Aston Villa the previous Saturday. Winning 4, losing 4 and drawing 5 of their games this season. Swansea have some decent players - notable mentions; Ollie Mcburnie- a Scottish 6 foot 2 centre forward with 4 goals this season. Leroy Fer - a Netherlands central midfielder who has played much of their previous 3 seasons in the prem. Finally - the wingback Martin Olsson, the Swedish international who developed at Ewood! Rovers go into this game on the back of two wins - looking to push further into the playoffs. From my point of view I think a point would be perfect but it’s hard to reign in my excitement with Rovers so I’ll plump for a 2-0 victory with an early goal in each half Pictures/video from last time we met - who can forget how well Josh King did in that game.
  19. Swansea City bounce back from their defeat on Saturday and claimed an impressive win over Blackburn Rovers at the Liberty Stadium. Despite taking the lead with a Charlie Mulgrew penalty Rovers threatened very little but still went into half time with their noses in front. Swansea did create multiple chances, and exploded out of the blocks in the 2nd half. Rovers held firm until a shot by Fulton hit the post and bounced off the back of David Raya into the net to levels the scores. A second Swansea goal soon followed by Roberts, before they ran away with the points with a 3rd and final goal by Celina. Swansea much better than their league position suggests and should expect to see them climb the table. Swansea City: Nordfelt, Roberts, van der Hoorn (c), Olsson (Fulton, 46), Carroll (Fer, 46), Naughton, Grimes, Celina, McBurnie (Baker-Richardson, 89), James, Carter-Vickers. Unused substitutes: Mulder, McKay, Rodon, Asoro, Baker-Richards. Goal: Raya OG, 64, Roberts, 68, Celina, 85. Rovers: Raya, Bennett, Lenihan (Rodwell, 11), Mulgrew (c), Bell, Evans (Rothwell, 70), Smallwood, Reed, Dack, Armstrong, Graham (Brereton, 59). Unused substitutes: Leutwiler, Williams, Conway, Palmer. Goal: Mulgrew pen, 25 Booked: Mulgrew, 19, Bennett, 42 Attendance: 18,035. Referee: Geoff Eltringham. 20. Lancashire lad

    THANK YOU ROVERS

Today our junior team Astley and Buckshaw under 10s (from Chorley) were treated to a unbelievable day by rovers community. 10 till 11 am the lads were coached by the team on the indoor pitches and played games against a couple of other teams from Blackburn area them before kick off they flag waved on the touch line ( even getting an appearance on sky🏁😀) .The best was yet to come as half time approached we told the lads there going on the pitch to take penalties, they simply couldn't believe it!! The match and atmosphere was great and hopefully this will lead to these going live football and not thinking football is a Xbox game..many thanks rovers On side note the day got even better as we went to watch Chorley FC after the match, the came from 2 down and beat league above barrow 3-2 infront of 2000 fans..What a bloody day
  21. Blackburn Rovers head on the road this week as they take on Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium. Blackburn come into this match fresh off the back of a monster win against Leeds United. Swansea City on the other hand come into this match fresh off the back of a defeat to Aston Villa. Both sides will be looking to get all 3 points to kick start their seasons. Rovers could mix it up in midfield once again, and we may even see a start from Ben Brereton. 22. Leeds are one team whose fans could claim to have had a wilder ride than us in recent times. They flirted with greatness in the late 90s and early noughties, getting to both a UEFA cup and Champions league semi final. Since then it has been one well publicised mess after another. Have they finally gotten things right this season? Early signs last season were promising too, before they fell away. The main reason their fans would have for genuine optimism this season is the appointment of the legendary coach Marco Bielsa. This guy has literally managed and had success around the world and it looks a real coup on Leeds behalf appointing him. As we know all too well though, the championship is a tough, tough battle to get out of. Can we be the ones to officially end the honeymoon for Marco? Recent results seem to suggest that their lightening start to the season has lost some of its buzz. Their last 6 league results have been; DWLDWD So, who has played for both teams? Here is Bigg Doggs mixed bag 11 , in our current formation for your viewing pleasure Robinson Grayson Matteo Kilgallon Warnock Batty Douglas Wilcox El-Hadji Diouf Sellars Fowler Bench- Luke Varney Have I forgotten anyone? When I think of Leeds United, this is the goal that always comes to mind. To me it epitomizes the excitement of that time period in the Premier league. Boom , have it. So after Tonys tinkering last game out, all bets are off with guessing the starting 11. Most of us welcomed the changes and whilst not a vintage performance, we got the desired result. We are up against a very different animal this game. Mistakes will be punished and missed chances will come back to bite us. My 11 would be Raya Bennett Lenihan Mulgrew Williams Rodwell Evans Rothwell Dack Palmer Graham Prediction 2-1 Rovers They are apparently bringing 8,000 fans, which is quite incredible. Should be a great atmosphere. Arte et labore
  23. An assessment of player performance v Leeds Each player was judged on the following criteria: Instance of excellent play * Instance of decent/good play * Instance of disappointing/poor play * Instance of terrible play * E&OE Ratings whoscored.com ratings Raya ********* 6.8 Bennett ************************ 7.0 Lenihan ***************** 7.9 (MoM) Mulgrew ***************** 7.0 Bell ***************** 6.8 Reed(67) **************** 7.1 Smallwood(56) ************* 5.9 Evans ********************** 6.9 Armstrong ******************* 7.7 Dack ************* 6.6 Graham(62) ************ 7.7 Rodwell(56) *********** 6.3 Brereton(62) ******** 6.2 Conway(67) **** 6.9 Highlights and Lowlights (A justification for the main ratings above) 0. Weak tackle from Smallwood on halfway allows the Leeds man a run on goal but Bell manages to cut out his poor pass and sets Armstrong off on a long run down the wing. He blitzes 2 defenders with his pace and he’s into the box. He attempts to square the ball to the waiting Graham but it’s blocked for a corner. 1. A second corner but from the right. Reed’s delivery is perfect as Graham runs in from around the penalty spot to power home his header into the top of the net. Great goal and one from the training ground! 4. Leeds’defence looking nervy but some good play in midfield sets up an attack. Armstrong is a spectator as Bell is outflanked. Bennett clears the incoming cross for a corner. 6. Smallwood, Bennett and Reed are all bamboozled just outside our box by the Leeds midfield. Roberts puts the low cross well past the post under pressure from Mulgrew. 7. Good long ball by Mulgrew to Graham who controls beautifully to lay back to Armstrong just outside the box. His shot is blocked. The ball comes back to Armstrong, he drives into the box, sidesteps the defender but his attempted curler is weak and easily blocked. 10. Smallwood is really looking off the pace today. Saiz rounds Evans too easily on the edge of the box and Raya tips his shot over the bar. Graham and Mulgrew both misjudge the corner and Jansson has a free header from 10 yards……over the bar! 12. Another galloping run by Armstrong down the wing. His push and chase tactic is working well here. He shoots from the edge of the box, it’s blocked but breaks for Dack. Good save by the keeper. Reed picks up and delivers a fine square ball from close to the touchline but Leeds bundle it away as Smallwood slides in. 21. A long ball bounces way over Graham’s head…….but Reed doesn’t give it up as a lost cause! He chases towards the flag, harries the defender and wins a corner! 22. Reed wins the ball again and flicks a lovely ball to Graham on the edge of the box. Armstrong crosses and Smallwood, in the box , makes an awkward attempt at a volley but it looks like he got a nudge in the back. It’s saved. (I gave Smallwood credit for being in the right place. It’s the second time he’s been in there sniffing!) 26. For the second time in a minute Armstrong leaves Bell exposed. Evans and Lenihan clear up. 36. Lenihan and Smallwood get in each other’s way and there’s danger! The low cross comes in and Bennett is there with a vital challenge, 2 yards out, to save the day. Offside anyway. 39. Lovely run and cross into the box by Bennett towards Graham. It falls to an unmarked Armstrong who drives the ball against the nearest defender. I’m getting a bit frustrated with that outcome but at least he won a corner! 42. Some nice midfield interplay between Evans, Reed and Bennett. Eventually Bennett’s beautiful cross finds Armstrong in the box. He controls well, beats his man and hits a nice shot but it curls over the bar. 44. Commentator noting how important it is that we don’t concede before half-time! 45. Saiz avoids Evans again and lobs the ball into the box. A totally unmarked Berardi squares and Klich scores! Difficult to say who was supposed to be covering Berardi. Armstrong? 55. Some nice play by Reed so far this half. Here he launches a long ball for Armstrong to chase. The defender fluffs it and a persistent Armstrong tries to chip it over the outrushing keeper from a tight angle. Good save. 61. Full-blooded challenge from Rodwell wins a throw and lifts the crowd! 66. Nice interception and lay off by Rodwell. Brereton, under pressure, sets off on a long drive down the wing but there’s no support and he lays it back. 68. Corner. Conway’s first touch and he places it perfectly for Lenihan who rises tallest to head into the net. 70. Bell’s headed clearance only just leaves the box and Klich strikes it first time but it’s straight at Raya. 77. Berardi sneaks round the back of Rodwell deep in the box………..offside phew! Then there’s a poor pass from Rodwell and Leeds stream forward. Evans slides in brilliantly on the edge of the box to deflect Clarke’s shot for a corner. 78. Rodwell eases the defender out of the way with his body allowing Evans to release Armstrong who again uses his pace to drive into the box. He shoots from a tight angle but the keeper saves with his legs. That’s the problem Armstrong seems to be having! He does a brilliant run, outpaces the defender but as he’s a centre-forward attacking from the wing, he’s invariably too wide and his shot has little chance of beating the keeper. It was the same in the last home match. 79. Bennett wins the ball and Brereton drives forward strongly, covering half the field! His final pass is weak though and doesn’t reach Dack. If only! 84. Armstrong is not covering back and Bell is again outnumbered. Eventually the ball falls to a completely unmarked Klich, central and just inside the box. Rodwell seems to be the guy marking no one but he isn’t the only one at fault. Raya pulls out one of his top saves to tip the ball over the bar! 95. Not very much has happened recently but that’s a pleasant change for the endgame! Game over.
  24. Blackburn Rovers returned from international break with a win over high flyers Leeds United 2-1. Goals from Danny Graham and Darragh Lenihan pushed Rovers over the line as Leeds lost their first away game of the season. Leeds made things interesting by scoring on the stroke of half time Klich the goalscorer. It was a high tempo game that offered many opportunities for both sets of players but Tony Mowbray will be the happier of the coaches. In this video we hear from Leeds United supporter Heidi Haigh with her thoughts and reaction to the result. The Gaffa Tony Mowbray gives us his opinion on the match, plus analysis and other reaction. 25. Blackburn Rovers are back at Ewood Park this weekend after the international break to take on high flyers Leeds United. Rovers come into the match on the back of a away victory against Bolton Wanderers. Leeds United on the other hand come into this match on the back of a 1-1 draw with Brentford. I suspect Leeds United will be favorites for this match due to their excellent start to the season, however you can never write off Rovers who will be looking to get a MASSIVE victory to springboard themselves up the table.
