Because the media have this romantic vision of the ‘Geordie Nation’, ‘52,000 passionate fans’ etc etc. Even though they’ve done nothing for 60 years. A bigger Preston North End.

Interesting isn't it. Elsewhere clubs lose money hand over fist and are run completely unsustainably yet Newcastle are run relatively well as a business by Ashley, he refuses to sanction mega spending because the manager wants it, sticks to his policy arguably to keep the club on an even keel in the Premier League and he gets slated for it. Seems the media cartel are in favour of clubs gambling on 'ambition' rather than being run sensibly.

He's been offered 12 million pounds a year by some Chinese team, Ashley would not match it. I think he was on 6 million at Newcastle. Oh dear, those poor long-suffering Newcastle fans, got to feel for them.

'Rafa's exit: How did it come to this?' http://www.skysports.com/share/11748227 According to this SSN article. Rafa was promised £50m per window and could still sign players on circa £75k per week. This wasn't enough for Rafa. Those poor little lambs, so hard done by.

Doesn't matter what age players are if they are not fit for purpose and can't do 90 minutes, that's down to the manager and his coaching /fitness staff. Downing is noted for being fit and Tony Pulis on record as saying post-match stats showed him as one of the top performers in distance covered. I have warmed a bit to his signing but he won't be surging past defenders to put crosses over so expect them from deeper and corners and freekicks. Mowbray likes to protect his own deficiency in building a strong defence by favouring midfielders of a defensive nature, Downing may not be suited to that.

Smallwood is not a Championship player. Full stop. What is the pont of keeping him as a reserve if he is not good enough when called upon? We need reserves who can do a job when required.

To me, the late goals was more caused by the fact we ran out of gas rather than lack of composure. We dropped deeper and deeper which invited pressure. A 35 year old whose legs may have gone isn't the answer to that one I'm afraid.

    Brexit

I'm not sure it's a question of running down the clock more there simply is no time left. The new PM will be in place on July 24th and will have just 14 weeks to renegotiate the deal. I've read the EU have already disbanded their negotiation team, Tusk and other EU leaders are clear the WA will not be renegotiated, there is no backstop alternative plan. There are no scheduled meetings or dates which take time to arrange etc. It simply will not happen. We've already wasted another three months on this thanks to Theresa May's total inability to run the negotiations or country. Another incompetent Tory PM who will be reviled for decades. She is still PM, what is she doing now? Nothing. Only an idiot would believe in renegotiation but then we are talking about Tory MPs, Conservative members and voters and leave supporters. We have totally pissed of the EU, they simply aren't interested and they are right to take this view. The only realistic solution is to revoke Article 50 or leave. Unless a referendum is called in late July there is no possibility of getting one in place to allow a vote before October 31st. Even then the timescale is probably impossible. The Tories and 17.4m leave voters have destroyed the country's future. Only Parliament revoking A50 can save us now. I'll never forgive the leave supporters if we crash out. They have destroyed the future with their original vote and now stubbornly refuse to accept they were wrong.

I can’t comment on his time at Hamburg only rangers and he didn’t look up to much. Can’t even get in our Scotland team which is horrific for central defenders. I really think we should be looking elsewhere for central defence than Scotland . It’s our weakest area

I enjoyed the final GoT season but there were too many gaps and arcs left unexplored for the story to really make sense. Dany was portrayed as snapping, even though you could tell it was 'meant' to be a gradual decline. But that's what happens when the story leaps 3 months in one episode. Jaime and Brienne needed more exploring too. More definitive explanation that Jaime couldn't allow himself to be redeemed because he was so ashamed of what he'd been doing to appease Cersei. Also Bronn randomly threatening Jaime and Tyrion halfway through at Cersei's behest? Nah, there's more to his story than that. And Dorne basically doesn't exist! Need GRRM to finish the books so I can read them and get the story proper in my head. It's no coincidence that the show has struggled for great dialogue since the end of S5. They should've waited for GRRM to finish the books before beginning filming imo.

That's it. We don't need perfection but someone who can do the basics of defending. We invite crosses into the box and are simply unable to deal with them. A big no no nonsense CB and something that resembles a left back.

    Stewart Downing Signs

I'll be very angry if it's Travis he squeezes out but not in the least bit surprised I always get the impression Mowbray played him through gritted teeth. He also had the perfect grafting midfielder who could also play at bit in Reed and was terrified of playing him there regularly. Another glaring example of signing a player not for a specific job but for a multitude of tasks so I don't see why this'll be any different other than maybe him being a pal guaranteeing him starts.

    Brexit

You got me - it's article 50! Don't know where 35 came from. The cancellation would only happen under extreme duress, but if backed into a corner where parliament is forced to choose between no deal or revoking I think they would revoke. It's not that unlikely we could end up in that situation should the new PM run down the clock to October 31st and get nowhere with the promised "re-negotiation".

Phil Jones To Leave Utd - Sell On Clause?

I think people are mostly talking about youth players under our current gaffer. Of the 4 you mention, only Travis was given his debut by TM, the others were already features of the squad if I remember rightly. Travis was about to be loaned out, and given how he has performed, clearly got his chance later than he should have. TM has given a fair few young players their debuts, that much is true. But then (so far) they're barely seen again. Hopefully that changes this season, but if we bring in the four more players we want, it's hard to see who will be given a real chance (ie, a run) in favour of which old guard member. Tony is very conservative about shaking up the established lot. Even when he signs players himself, ones older than our youth players, he has a tendency to take a long time to brave integrating them fully on matchdays. I think the best youth players should be sent out on loan until January if squad needs will allow. All of them, except the established ones (I'll count Nuttall, Brereton and Chapman in that, although I wouldn't be too fussed if one or both of the first two went on loan to League One if we end up with enough proper cover). As for who we bounce and the careers they go on to have...if you keep hold of a player until he's about 21, barely play him, then release him, you'll never truly know what that player might have been capable of. Just because they don't go onto anything special doesn't mean they weren't capable if handled right. Those years before players reach 21 are critical to their development, and sometimes the harm done can't be reversed.
