    Summary

Many scouts dismissed Field in the early part of his career because he lacked physique and strength. He was only ever on amateur terms at Halifax and towards the end of a three month trial in Barrow he was trying to obtain work at the Vickers Shipyard when Barrow offered him professional terms. At Southport he emerged as a voracious goal scorer and the Rovers, who had fallen on hard times in the Third Division, were less judgmental than many at the earlier stages of his career. Dark and swarthy, favouring the left side he had electric acceleration and a goal scorer's obsession. He scored with sweetly struck long shots but harvested just as many creeping in unseen under the shadow of the posts. An efficient penalty expert he ended his career with an impressive strike rate, re-joining his manager Ken Furphy at Sheffield United. He never prospered in the First Division but followed Furphy to America and established himself as a star of the NASL. After two seasons with the star studded Cosmos he moved on to Memphis, which he later made his permanent home, working as production manager for a steel stockholder. In his final game for the club, who had been sold and were re-locating to Calgary, he scored the last goal, dribbling around the goalkeeper and then bending to steer the ball over the line with his nose.
