    Summary

A regular international at schoolboy level, Broomes was hunted by all the major clubs so it was considered a coup when he signed for the Rovers. A left sided, central defender he had athleticism, composure on the ball and could use possession well. His career with the Rovers was dogged by misfortune. He missed huge amounts of playing time with hamstring injuries that were later diagnosed as being caused by an ankle irregularity. When he did finally break into a struggling side he was playing well when he was unlucky to be sent off at Chelsea. With the experience of Peacock being preferred for the rest of the dog fight he found the door closed to him, particularly when the new manager, Graeme Souness decided to opt for experience. When he left the club he continued to struggle with injury and did not settle until Craig Brown eased him patiently into the Preston line-up but at Deepdale and Stoke City (where he missed a huge amount of playing time through injury) he did not fulfil the potential that was so evident when he was young. He went to live in Astley near Leigh, working as a coach at the Pro Sports facility in Wythenshawe but in 2017 he opened his own Pro Sports franchise in Leigh Sports Village.
