    Summary

The son of a slate miner, Chapman had the initial frustration of trying to dislodge Charlie Thompson at Hearts but a move to Raith proved that he was a strong work- horse if his distribution was aberrant. He improved the Rovers' defence and it was a disappointment when he returned to Scotland. Although he regretted it and returned a year later Percy Smith was established in his place. Undeterred he set about solving the club's centre forward problem, acting as a utility defender when required because he could play in all five defensive positions. He gained two championship medals and after the war took over the Red Lion and became player-manager at Accrington. A broken ankle in 1921 finally ended his playing career and he commenced a variety of occupations locally. For a while he had an outfitter's shop in Accrington, he was the landlord at two public houses in Blackburn and finally worked 22 years on the engineering staff of British Northrop Loom Company. He died when he was staying with his daughter.
