    Summary

When England arrived for trials after starring for the Flintshire schoolboy side he was sent home. The judgement was that he was too slender to become a professional and would never have the strength to compete at top level. Fortunately somebody thought again and one of the club's greatest players was signed. Despite his height (he later filled out his physique so that he became a dominant central defender) England had the touch that would have found him a position anywhere on the field, a tactical brain and the ability to slide a pass with precision. He could also shoot, was supreme in the air and competed well. He was launched into the first team at the age of eighteen and was part of the team around 1963 that might with fortune have been truly exceptional. Exposure to international football and the narrow confines of a small town club led to his inevitable departure. He continued to grace the game at Tottenham, became the Welsh team manager and in 1984 was awarded the MBE for his services to Welsh football. When at Blackburn he opened an eponymous woodyard at Hoghton but sold this and invested in residential homes in North Wales.
