    Summary

Signed by the club not just because they wanted a left back but because they needed a leader he was immediately made captain. In doing so they recognised that there was a need of a link between the boardroom and the dressing room and the relaxed, articulate Scot managed the role with ease. He committed himself to the town by opening a gentlemen’s outfitters that remained in business until the 1970s. A natural athlete who might have excelled on the track he possessed great speed and would sometimes give a winger a start so he could enjoy the thrill of overhauling him. He was also a fair cricketer with Blangowrie CC. Before he came to England he had played in three Scottish cup finals, five Glasgow Charity cup finals, gained 5 international caps and represented Dumbartonshire. He was persuaded to assist the Rangers in 1887 but maintained his registration with Vale of Leven so that he could appear for them in the Scottish Cup. It was a huge shock to the Rovers when he retired in 1893 because he was still regarded as the best full back in football. He was subsequently elected a director of the club. A lifelong bachelor he died in his home in Wellington Street shortly before the Rovers won the cup in 1928.
