    Summary

After failing to make the grade at West Brom Downing worked his way into the game via the lower leagues, playing four seasons at Walsall.  After an average season with MK Dons the club decided  he was surplus to requirements. He joined the Rovers on transfer deadline after the club had failed in attempts to bring in other centre backs. His uncle , Keith Downing had a long career in the Football  League, primarily with Wolves . He was also related to the Judas Priest guitarist. K.K.Downing. He is generally credited with being instrumental with saving the club's season. Stepping in after a mediocre start had seen Lenihan lost with a long term injury he replaced the struggling Ward and played his part in turning the club around. His record of being on the losing side only twice may never be equalled. His desire to play regularly resulted in a loan move to Doncaster and his release thereafter.
