  1. I was on the Park End terrace for that cup game in 86, and it was the most tightly packed crowd I think I've been in. I don't remember a great deal about the game, you could barely see much of the match apart from when play was at our end. One abiding memory though was at full time as the Rovers fans tried to make their way towards the exit tunnels - the crush was frighteningly tight and it became impossible to even lift your arms up. As the crowd from left and right merged together toward the exit my mate in front of me could see that a bloke with a lit cigarette between his lips was heading straight for him, unable to remove it. Inevitably they became squashed together face to face, the hot end of the lit fag finding its target right in the middle of my mate's chin. He sported a fine burn mark under his bottom lip for the next couple of weeks, and a couple more on his chest where the burning embers had fallen down inside the front of his t-shirt.

  2. RIP Fred. I used to have the occasional natter with him in the Feildens Arms in Mellor Brook, which he owned. He'd pop in for a quick half and a brandy regularly. A very down to earth pleasant bloke. Sometimes (if there weren't too many people in) he'd buy a round for everyone. He loved to tell tales about his time in the merchant navy, but he hardly ever mentioned the Rovers.

  3. If you like a bit of Led Zeppelin then you'd do far worse than going to see 'Whole Lotta Led'. I saw them last night at King George's, they were bloody great - they had the sound nailed on, were powerful and energetic, and very loud like it should be. And as for the drummer's Moby Dick - it was massive!

There will always be someone who will look down their nose at a tribute band, but if you want to see the real LZ then go on, be my guest. This lot were pretty authentic. No wigs, either!

  4. I've just bought a ticket for the Roger Waters show in Manchester, in May. I can't believe I've payed £50 for the pleasure, but from what I've read it's an astonishing show. If you're a Floydie it's going to be one not to miss - Dark Side Of The Moon in full, plus his own stuff. I was totally dumbfounded by Pink Floyd at Maine Road in '88, I just need this to complete the set!

I'm also looking forward to yet another encounter the genius that is Roy Harper, in Darwen, of all places, the night after.

  5. I scanned that pic from the official commemorative promotion souvenir brochure - there's three more if you want to see them, but, being a bit of a numb nuts as far as computer stuff goes, they'd probably all be really big like that.

    Shall I post them?

  6. Red and black halves for the away colours is the one. We should have adopted it years ago. We should never have bothered with yellow, orange, black or any of those other crappy designs we've had.

Blue and white halves will do for the home shirt. All three options look pretty much the same to me. It doesn't really matter if there's the odd red flash here and there, or who makes it, or what the sponsors logo looks like.

  7. My Dad took me to Deepdale that day. I was only 14 and couldn't blag him into taking me to Bristol, so the Nob End / Swansea game was the next best thing.

We stood on the Kop end, at that time it was PNE's home end, and I distinctly remember it being well populated with Rovers fans. Every other bloke seemed to have a radio wedged up tight to their ears, and there were quite a few familiar faces knocking about. I think most Rovers were happy to keep a low profile - I wonder though if the result had been in our favour how many would have blown their cover! As it was when news filtered through that the Rovers were winning a fair old buzz went round the ground. I don't think there was a special pen for us, but I may be wrong (it was a long time ago!).

I also recall the heartbreaking sight of thousands of Taffs in the Town End celebrating like they'd just, er... been promoted to Division 1, which of course they had. On goal difference, for Christ's sake.

I don't remember any wide scale ###### taking aimed at any Rovers fans, but then again we didn't hang around for long after the match and I still remember that feeling of despair I had on the way home, and for days later for that matter.

Why, Preston? Why did you **** it up?
