  1. Steve. See the Facebook site, The Talbot Archive. You may be able to register and make contact via that site. Wally Talbot and his son Howard (both sadly deceased) were Blackburn based photographers who captured images, in and around Blackburn, over many years. There will be countless photographs of Ewood Park covering the black and white era you’re looking for. See also www.cottontown.org for further information and email addresses etc.

Anyone got any pics of the old John Lewis restaurant/bar in the Nuttall Stand?  Was in it years ago and met Shearer and the whole team.

Best I could get from a Google search. Distant view of it from the Darwen End plus another view of the entrance (right of the ticket office) from the outside on Nuttall Street. Nothing from inside, unfortunately.

Do any of the players want to pass it forwards?  Their first instinct seems to look backwards for a pass

Agree. We’re the kings of going backwards and sideways.

    So much for the press.

We need to up the ante and move forwards. If we insist on playing it out from the back, the receiving midfielder has to control the ball, turn and start moving FORWARDS, ffs.

Burnley and Pendle have a sizeable Asian populations as well - for example Nelson is around 44% Asian.

Yes, I have worked in both Nelson and Burnley.

Taking Blackburn’s (not including Darwen) current population of 120k and an Asian percentage of 35% (from previous census), that’s 42k Asians in the town. As you’ll know, they’re keen on cricket, they like walking around in Utd and City shirts but not as keen on getting down to their local club.

It’s a problem for Burnley but a massive problem for the Rovers.

I've just dusted off and brought up to date from a few years ago a very rough estimate of both clubs' catchment areas. These are the places that locals could naturally gravitate to each club, not that they do.

The LCC population estimate for 2021 has Burnley at 94,000 and Pendle at 96,000. I've then added a third of Hyndburn*, 28,000 and one third of Ribble Valley* 20,000. Total 238,000 before Rossendale.

Blackburn has 150,000, plus one third of Hyndburn 28,000 and one third of Ribble Valley 20,000. Then another third of Chorley* 34,000 and a quarter of South Ribble* 28,000. Total 260,000 before Rossendale.

I haven't included Rossendale's 71,000 as I don't know the area well enough to have a proper opinion, but my gut feeling, backed up by posts above, is there would naturally be more Burnley than Blackburn fans. My guess is therefore that the catchments are pretty much equal.

    * I split Hyndburn 3 ways - Rovers, Burnley and Stanley.

Ribble Valley 3 ways - Rovers, Burnley and PNE

Chorley 3 ways - Rovers, Burnley and Notlob.

South Ribble 75% PNE and 25% Rovers.

That’s a pretty good assessment o2g. I would say Rossendale is 66% Burnley, 33% Rovers, with only Haslingden and Helmshore being strongholds for us. I’m assuming you mean Rovers, PNE and Notlob for Chorley.

I have worked in Chorley previously and just get the feeling that, with the Breezeblock being where it is now (as opposed to BWFC being south of Bolton town centre), our support in Chorley is becoming less as each year passes.

I’ve done this sort of thing in the past and, give or take a few thousand, both catchment areas were the same.

The ‘elephant in the room’ is the substantial, and growing, Asian population of Blackburn. I realise that the club are working hard to get as many of them as possible down to Ewood but it must be hard.

Another thing to mention is that it becomes more difficult for Rovers if our near neighbours are doing well at any particular time. Five miles to the west and we enter Preston territory. Five miles to the east and we enter Burnley territory. Seven or eight miles to the south and it’s Bolton. We are hemmed in on all sides. Burnley only have to worry about us and, joking aside, their support stretches well into West Yorkshire and North Yorkshire.

    Very little in it.

Whatever happened to poster Stuart btw?

I thought that the other day when I was looking back at an old thread.

Another lost poster is phillipl, who hasn’t either posted or looked in on the site for well over a year.

I don’t post on the other (Thenodrog’s) site but a mate of mine, who used to post on here, defected over there and for a few years, posted virtually daily. Then, at the beginning of June, this year, he simply stopped posting. Sometimes, I think a nerve is touched, for some reason and posters throw in the towel.

I wouldn't say I've never had a pint at this time of day but goodness me, 10am on a weekday!! The local public health teams will having kittens.

An East Lancashire pub is selling bargain-price pints today (September 9) in tribute to Queen Elizabeth II who died on Thursday.

Entwistle Hotel, on Entwistle Street in Darwen, will be selling 6p pints from 10am to 11am today.

Was in there when we beat Wolves 3-2 away in May 2011, final game of the season when we avoided the drop.

It was the only pub showing the game for what seemed liked miles. We’d been on a wild goose chase to a pub in Egerton before ‘about turning’ it back to Darwen.

The booze definitely wasn’t 6p a pint on that day but the place was packed to the rafters.

  8. I live a dozen or so miles south of Warrington. The M6 southbound is always snarled up in the mornings from the M62 approaches to Thelwall Viaduct and beyond. It’s the opposite, late afternoon onwards, when travelling north. You also have to factor in the smart motorway work on the M6 inbetween Wigan and the M62. In short, it’s a fecking nightmare and, if you have to use the M6, the earlier the better.

For 10 years now since relegation, our wage budget has been about 150-200% our club income. If you don't have rich owners, that can't happen, running it at even 80% is pushing it.

So if Venkys sold the club to say the Rovers Trust for 1p tomorrow, the first thing the Trust would have to do is work on halving our wage bill. And you generally get what you pay for in football, so that would leave us struggling to stay in the Championship.

Obviously Venkys made the biggest mistake in Rovers history swapping out Williams and Allardyce for Anderson and Kean. And for those of us who were Allardyce fans, I think we've more reason to be livid than most as our argument was relegation for a club Rovers size is a financial death sentence, so its insane to take such a risk in the name of pretty football.

But you can't turn back time. Without Venkys 10 years ago we might still be a PL club, but without them now we might be a League 1 club, so I just think we have to forgive them.

Some of what you say, I agree with, in particular the wages to turnover ratio. In your hypothetical situation, though, the Trust could also look to replacing Waggott and employing a more competent CEO with a remit to growing the fan base and, most importantly, the number of season ticket holders. In short, to increase revenues. It wouldn’t just be getting the wages down to a more manageable level.

Clubs of a general similar size to us like Bolton, Wigan and Blackpool have all recently been close to folding but have managed to find new owners. Blackpool and Wigan have also managed to come up from League 1 and Bolton will no doubt achieve that feat within the next few seasons.

It can be done and I would certainly take a relegation if it meant getting rid of Venky’s. One step back to take two steps forward. Nothing will change whilst they remain in charge.

Is there anywhere to park for an easy getaway after the game? Never been to DW before.

Have my son and 2 grandsons with me and we need to be somewhere.

    Thanks.

Your best bet is the first large car park you come to on Stadium Way (off Scot Lane) but leave a few minutes before the end of the game. It’s a ball ache trying to get off any of the car parks there, if you walk back to them with every one else and end up in the ‘free for all.’

  11. The Giakoumakis story is a non event really, just a reporter saying the player has been ‘scouted’ by Premier League and Championship clubs since the turn of the year. No links and nothing concrete. He was signed from the Dutch league in September last, for £2.1m, rising to £2.5m based upon appearances.

They are chatting about Giakoumakis on one of the Celtic forums, nothing relating to the above story, just speculating about the possibility of him becoming cheesed off if he continues to be used sparingly.

As I mentioned earlier, he’ll get more game time shortly when the Champions League and domestic cup games start coming thick and fast. He seems happy at Celtic and has a good relationship with the manager there. I don’t think Rovers would be able to better his wages and wouldn’t be able to bid anywhere near what Celtic may see as tempting to let him go.

    Non starter.
