At a time when young recruitment was a novelty Carver was an anachronism, although he was not a typical youth. A butcher's boy he had developed great strength and could lift 500 lbs past his knees. He developed into a great centre-half, strong in the tackle and capable of dominating the centre of the field. A cartilage operation in 1934 caused him to appraise his career and he demanded more money, which ultimately led to a transfer to Newcastle. After the war he moved into management with Workington but was soon in demand in Europe and moved in 1947 to coach with the Dutch FA. After returning to coach Millwall he was placed in charge of the England B team but he decided that Italy was the place to advance if he was to learn scientific coaching. With Lazio (twice), Juventus, Valdagho and Roma he gained a reputation that endured. Interspersed were spells with West Brom, Coventry and Tottenham but he always found English football backward after his Italian experiences. He ended his football involvement with coaching spells in Portugal and the USA.
