    Summary

The son of a journeyman engineer, he was still a young man when he came to the Rovers but was already a complete player, awkward in style but effective and a hard opponent. Although he could play anywhere on the half back line he was most effective in the centre and contributed greatly to successive cup final victories in 1890 and 1891. He spent eight seasons with the club before helping New Brighton to the championship of the Lancashire League and elevation to the Football League. An upholsterer and cabinet maker he was landlord of the Swan Inn when he was at Blackburn but fell on hard times when he retired and was grateful to the Rovers for a benefit game. He and Tom Brandon married sisters from Blackburn. His death at an early age came after he had been receiving treatment for a peptic ulcer that turned out to be cancer.
