What a refreshing change that was. We actually went for it from the first whistle and had them on the back foot from the off. We also got people in the box, including Evans on numerous occasions where he normally doesn't move from the centre circle. We played like the home team. Think on Tony...

I thought he'd be dreadful but Downing was very good. The game suited him, a lot of aerial duels which he does well. Still tried to give them a goal with a dreadful pass, but his run and pass for our 2nd goal was Beckenbauer-esque.

Conway was excellent too. Showed the kind of intelligence and nous that AA and Palmer lack. Delighted for the 'bull'. Mogga said he's pretty much a cert to keep his place at the Riverside and so he should. A proper winger playing on the wing. Who'd have thunk it...

    Dack and Graham were brilliant.

Well done the team and well done Mogga. First win by more than a goal all season in the league.

SWFC had some talented plyers but were a long way from a team.

Missed his post match radio interview; anyone able to share a link or tell me where to find it? Thanks.

Fair enough Biz. You think someone’s wrong, you give an opposite viewpoint and it’s debated.

Thd thing that’s annoying me about the board in recent weeks is the plethora of posts like; ‘God, soooo negative on here’, ‘just get behind Ben, just trust Mowbray ffs’

If you make a point expect to be debated on it, not just be shut down.

Perhaps all posters should understand the meaning of ‘confirmation bias’ before considering what other people write?

I really am sick and fed up of the amount of negative comments/snipes aimed at this young lad. How many of you moaners were at Ewood today? If you were, you should have seen a young lad working his socks off in a position he clearly isn't suited to. However, he did what was asked of him and there were plenty of us on the Riverside who appreciated his efforts.

It would appear that just because he is carrying the weight of a £7 million tag, he should be setting the world on fire from day one. He is just a kid still learning his trade and if Tony feels that is where he should have played today we have to accept it.

In case some of you "experts" have forgotten, we won today thanks to a tremendous effort by ALL the players.

    In Tony we trust.

It’s all about fitness. He was blowing very quickly. Just needs to reach the required standard for fitness and then the real player can be seen and judged properly.

He appears to be a confidence player too. Carrying a price tag is easier for some more than others and he’s going to find it hard to show what he’s got when he’s (a) unfit (b) being brought on to do cameos.

If we’d have had a like for like for DG to bring on yesterday, woukd we have seen him instead. Probably. TM is doing what he’s paid to do. Buy talent for now AND his future plans. Give the manager and the player time to prove themselves. Getting on Brereton’s back will not help only hinder.

  4. Not read every post in detai; apologies if I’ve missed any of the below:

    - Players...don’t think I’ve seen anyone mention our promotion winner Antonsson and has Jason Wilcox has a mention?

    - Dirty Leeds...Elland Road is s shocking ground and horrible place fo go; their fans aren’t the nicest (home and away)

    -  Sir Matt Busby Rememberance...their orchestrated ‘protest’ in the minute science at Ewood including Don Revie RIP banners and the Munich song is etched in my memory. Remember: an electric atmosphere and huge swathes of Ewood chanting, “Leeds scum”; Strachan & McAllister gesticulating to their fans to shut up and thanking to the BBE to applaud our supporters.

I went for Graham. Thought he was excellent personally with his hold up play, flick ons and knock downs. Saw a few people on the match thread suggest he was poor. Think they need to have a quiet word with themselves.

Did the ugly stuff well. There is a marked difference in his attitude and work rate to what it was a little over 12 months too. We certainly need a player from his mould as soon as possible for back up.

Dack had a glorious moment in the final third on the LHS in the first half and his goal just proved how good he is as an innate talent. Thought Villa did a good job on him and did well to keep him fairly quiet. That said, the number of free kicks he wins is important.

Nyambe gets better and better. What is interesting is he isn’t being targeted by opponents quite as much in the way he was last season, which he deserves praise for and I hope Bell will grow in stature and confidence in the way our no.2 has. If Nyambe can improve his aerial presence we have a truly appreciating asset on our hands.

Reed was superb (other than the free kick). Looks like a dynamo. Love the way he looks forward and seeks to use the ball quickly. Villa felt his presence for sure.

Whilst my family and I left gutted at their equaliser, there were loads of positives in the performance and much to be optimistic about when you compare where we are now in comparison with 2 years ago.

    RIP Owen Coyle

Three cheers for Tony Mowbray & Mark Venus

Idiot Walker family part 67 -

In The Times this morning, Watford owner turns down £125 million for 36% stake - that values the club at £350 million.

That’s Watford, average Premier League crowd of 20,000.

It would be interesting to see how the average value of PL clubs has increased year on year since 2010. I suspect it’s rather a lot!

If they have turned down 15 million for Dack I think we really should respect them for supporting the manager and indeed the club. 750k to 15 million quid with add ons is a very tempting offer. There is no guarantee that form may not dip or injuries happen. That is a risky decision and they should be applauded for taking it. I hope he continues to play like a 15 million pound player.

On the money (no pun intended).

Thats football unfortunately. I still remember crying myself to sleep for a week after Shearer left. Was a mere kid then.

And £15m then was quite different from £15m now.

More evidence the club is being better run too.

PS I remember where I was when he heard Shearer had gone; rather like people remember where they were when we beat Burnley 5-0 (?) and JFK and Diana died.

i was walking past the fitter’s workshop in the factory where I worked. Sun was shining through the roof lights. Gutted yet perversely proud that our name was attached to the world record fee. Still would rather he’d stayed. No single player has ever given me such confidence just by seeing his name on the team sheet. Legend.

No we wouldn't! I know this because we didn't! There were regrets that we had to force Speedie out after all he'd done but, collectively, we wet ourselves with excitement.

We knew who he was alright. You're making this up!

Agree in part. Smashing the British transfer record was the most exciting part initially for a player that was much talked about and had played for England. That said, his 118 appearances and 23 goal record for Southampton isn’t what got us excited. It was his potential.

Remember the BBE singing Speedie’s name in our first home game in the Prem against Arsenal. They played a goodbye message from him to the fans. I remember the chant morphing from Speedie to Shearer as Alan ran out on to the pitch. We never looked back from there.

Also remember Speedie getting arrested on S’oton’s pre-season tour (to Channel Islands?) and seem to recall 4,000 holes putting posters up around the old BBE turnstiles saying “We’ll spring Speedie.” Happy days!

As in they refuse to move there under any circumstances. Nothing more sinister than that.

But something is behind that; wasn’t implying it is sinister. There’s a reason or principle at play; otherwise a non issue. BBE view is just revere of DE. Same stand etc.

  11. 33 minutes ago, Mattyblue said:

Not sure with this issue. As I know plenty of Blackburn Enders that did, the Wolves walk out was very well attended in the Blackburn End.

Its more that the Darren Enders feel they are the bastions of the atmosphere and the Blackburn End gave up years ago.

Though in reality as the Darwen End numbers dwindled neither were owt to write home about. But now we’ve got the chance to make it a proper end again - Palace style, so why not go for it?

I don’t see what the problem is. It’s how I remember it when I was a teenager. BBE was the place you went if you wanted more atmosphere and to sing.

Darwen End was an away fan only section then.

Just because the ground has changed and we have TV cameras nowadays, I’d rather have one ‘solid end’.

Unfortunately as we’ve seen on this board there’s a hardcore that have this real issue with the Blackburn End, to the extent where some even talk about stopping going over moving.

Bizarre, especially with this team so deserving our support, but there you go.

    ???

Please can you expand on reason(s) behind this.

Decent enough side, but a few top half Championship finishes instead of their usual lower leagues existence and their fans seem to think they are some kind of purveyors of the beautiful game:

One poster on their board referred to it as a fiasco. I’d say they were formerly outthought and then outfought but we weren’t dirty.

If anything the ref should have given us a couple of decisions (Rothwell being sliced in half in particular).

Think they are in danger of giving themselves a nosebleed.

anti-football and inept officials won the day” apparently.

Wasn’t aware that I didn’t like Brentford before, but between this and the managers comments it seems like they reckon they are bleeding Barcelona or something just because they ineffectively knock it about a bit.

Look forward to going to theirs with a full strength side and playing them off the park.

I seem to recall a pretty well worked build up to our goal and our three most threatening forward players being either on the bench for 2/3 of the game or unavailable.

They must still be reeling from Charlie’s free kick on that great day in 2017 (when we went down at Griffin Park to be re-born).

Look forward to Bradley showing ‘em how to cut pretty patterns in the turf whilst he turns them inside out in the return fixture.

Typically after a new signing announced you want to believe they're going to be a good signing but that review from the Mackem is sobering to say the least. I hope this one doesn't do more damage than good. This one is all on Mowbray now, I know he can pass it off as "cheap" punt but it's down to him to show off his man management skills and get something back in return.

Uneasy about this one but hopefully the mood here, the manager will inspire him. Good luck to him.

Good luck to Sunderland. Good fans, deserve better.

The vast majority of these posts seem fair and reasonable.

it appears we are concerned about ‘taking a punt’ and the impact it may have on team spirit and the dressing room.

i would argue the quality of our manager now is quite different. We don’t know the non-financial terms Mowbray has agreed and we shouldn’t under-estimate the power of s strong dressing room either to pull him round, or spit him out.

Strukee me the person with everything to prove is Rodwell and if he doesn’t, Mowbray will know how to deal with him.

Whilst it’s fair to be concerned, as supporters we need to set him up to succeed and just see what happens!

Already has against Ipswich... Does need a another.

    Agreed on the 2nd one.

Apologies...need another is what I meant. You can see he’s frustrated (in a good way). On another day woukd have had two against Millwall.

  17. Funny how previous opinions so often cloud judgements on players.

I agree with earlier comments on Bell. He is getter my used to being in the team and at also playing at a higher level.

Nyambe is growing by the minute. Bell reminds me of how Ryan was when he started in the team too. Trying not to make a mistake and showing occasional glimpses of the more natural game.

Nyambe has one key area for development; heading the ball! That said he is learning how to use his strength more off the ball to mitigate this. It will be interesting to see if teams target him aerially as much at set pieces and re-starts as we saw last season. I think it will diminish.

Smallwood looks out of sorts and appears to be struggling; looks like a lack of form combined with being challenged the step up.

Evans has always frustrated me. I’m not a big proponent of his; sometimes his slatinga are justified sometimes not. Right now he is playing his best football for us. Looks fit. Let’s hope it stays that way!

Thought Samuel looked sharper, hungrier and stronger (other than his skier shot).

Graham looks like he needs to get his account up and running and is frustrated on the goals front; otherwise a solid performance and led the line well.

Nuttall remains an interesting prospect; injuries may demand he stays but think a loan to League One would do him a world of good.

Rothwell not only showed he has some talent and class, his attitude was there for all to see last night. Inherently positive when he gets the ball and put a really big shift in too.

Thinking back to how we have progressed under TM. One thing to sure is, he does have an eye for a player and is clearly good at developing players too. Let’s hope he can find some more numbers that fit the bill to bolster the squad. It will define our season. Without many injuries we will be fine this season, if not, could become a nail biter!

So refreshing to go to games now and feel unity and a sense of pride and belief that we can comeback in games too. Well done, TM, well done team, well done supporters.

It’s great to enjoy Ewood again. Thank you!
