He has no long term goal here. His sees his job to maximise revenue on a balance sheet for this season only with no planning for 2,3,5,10 years down the line.

Absolutely. This goes to the crux of the matter.

At the West Brom game last season it was pointed out to him that the very high price had resulted in a low take up of match tickers by home fans . His response was that they’d made a lot of money from the away fans.

(🤔 I wonder if he’d thought that a lower price might have encouraged more away fans as well as home.)

So Preston North End have (probably) sold at least double the STs of Blackburn Rovers, imagine ever saying that.

And a certain poster actually has the gall to call us all ‘clueless’ with a straight face, as the evidence of the enormous hole the club is in commercially is there for all to see…

Not only is there no accountability, there’s no leadership either.

If there was , first thing on Monday morning when the reality of the disastrous ticket sales is apparent, the club would issue a mea culpa followed by a proper price initiative to row this back.

If there is to be a new manager announcement this could be wrapped up and marketed as a ‘new dawn’ .An attempt to bring a feel good factor  into the club.

I realise that there would have to be something given back to those that have renewed but a quarter full Ewood  next season will help nobody.

Match by match ticket sales will never replace lost season tickets.

  3. I’ve had a season ticket for decades but haven’t renewed as yet. I have a number of friends and family who are in the same boat. We all know that the club has tested the patience of its  supporters this past 12 years but this feels like a watershed moment to me. There are fans that I never dreamed would give up on it all that are on the verge of doing so.

How  have we ended up with a CEO with so little  business acumen or feel for Blackburn Rovers? ( walking through the lounges on your way to the car park saying “ thank you for your support “ is not enough! Jack Walker would have seen through this chancer in two minutes.)

The ludicrous season ticket pricing, marketing and farcical manager search will, I suspect, have lost 1,000s of fans.

I wouldn’t be surprised if PNE, Burnley, Blackpool and Bolton Wanderers have all sold twice as many tickets as Rovers.

There’s no accountability at this football club.

  4. I know this doesn’t answer your question D-side17 but here’s an observation.

A friend of mine who supports Stoke City but lives up here took his grandson to his first game at the Brittania Stadium the other week. He rang the club to ask if they was anything they could do to mark the occasion. They asked for his seat number and  asked him to be in the ground 15 minutes before kick off. When they took their seats, two club employees, in uniform, came to them with a goodie bag of Stoke City branded items and a certificate signed by the staff to commemorate the lad’s first game.

They’ve now got a (Lancashire based) supporter for life.

  5. We went to Heathcotes bar and grill in Clitheroe last week and I have to say it was extremely poor to say the least.

Its on the site of the Olive press, which we actually enjoyed, but was inconsistent in terms of quality and service.

As for the grill, we arrived and the place was deserted, the walls are covered with Paul Heathcote awards and qualifications, so settled down to in anticipation. Waitress came over and took the drinks order, everything going swimmingly so far.

Debs ordered the grilled fish, which first came in batter, so we sent that back, then basically she got 4 pieces of 2” by 2” fish pieces, cod, mackerel, sea bass and salmon, which was ok, but at £15.50 we felt ripped off, and we’d finished well before her food was returned.

My son ordered traditional fish and chips, £12, and the fish was terrible, mostly batter, I got a burger which was fine, no complaints.

All in all not a patch on Nigel Howarths establishments and we won’t be going again, shame really as the building is great, setup is great, but food isn’t good enough for the price and the choice locally, puts this Place well down the pecking order.

I went there recently and it was blo0dy awful. Service poor and almost every dish oversalted, almost to the point of being inedible.

When you think of the competition in the Ribble Valley it's amazing Heathcote thinks he can get away with such a poor performance.

  6. Alerted by a friend who listened to the original broadcast, I've just been listening to the repeat of the BBC Radio 4 programme The Last Word. It's their weekly obituary programme; and last Thursday's featured a tribute to Ronnie in which, in addition to playing some old clips of Ronnie speaking about parts of his career [including the story about Tom Finney which was in the LT article], the presenter [Matthew Bannister] also interviewed "Duggie". It doesn't tell us anything we didn't already know; but was good to listen to.

Btw, it begins with a clip of the minute's clapping from the Chelsea game, which seemed to impress Matthew Bannister as a way of paying tribute.

If anyone else wants to listen, the programme can be caught for a few days more via the BBC website and going to their iPlayer "Listen Again" page.

Thanks for that M1st, it was excellent. ( on at about 25 minutes into the programme). Although I was too young to see Ronnie in his pomp, my first game at Ewood was his testimonial when Rovers beat England 10 6! ( 1970?). I met him on numerous occasions since then and it would be difficult to find a finer gentleman. I spoke with Douggie on Saturday ( another complete gentleman). It is going to be strange not see that famous double act, together, around Ewood in the future.

    RIP Ronnie.

  7. Taken from another thread:

I recall being told a story about a lad that used to drink in the Clifton arms and later worked in the Jubilee that jumped the fence in the corner of the riverside late 70’s, he ran alone into the 5000 burnley fans in the darwen end, they backed off, must have thought he was carrying a grenade! Then he was saved by the police, fined and they had a whip round in the pub to pay his fine.

Well, I was only a kid at the time :D but I seem to remember that the ' offender' was a small ginger haired kid nicknamed Sylvester. He was always the cheer leader in any Rovers hoolie action around that time. If memory serves me correctly he took a swallow dive into the Clampetts at the corner of the Riverside ( where all Shad and Mill Hill's finest had gathered ) and walked away unscathed.

  8. This is spooky CLB... I had my wedding reception elsewhere but spent my wedding night at the Millstone.

Thought I was being sneaky and secretive but was grassed up by the only person I trusted with that info and woke up to find my car had been 'decorated' during the night.

    You reading this Wiggy? :P

    Not guilty Guv! B)

  9. I have just finished A Thousand Spendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini, who also wrote The Kite Runner which was recommended earlier.

This is a fabulous, heart rending tale following the lives of two Afghanistani women from the period prior to the Soviet invasion through to the fall of the Taliban. Even though it's fiction it gives an insight into what our troops are up against in this much troubled country. Highly recommended.

  10. Let's hope the dodgy Russian and odious Kenyon haven't time to read the papers today....there is a fantastic, full page article in the Torygraph jobs section ( David Bolchover) on Hughesy's management style. The website is down at the moment but I'll try and post a link later if possible. It's probably even worth buying a copy.

  11. I am holidaying next week and have put aside This Thing of Darkness for then. I'm looking forward to that after all your recommendations.

If you're into thrillers I've been enjoying Robert Wilson's Javier Falcon series. The Blind Man of Seville, The Silent and the Damned etc.

However, last night I finished Long Walk to Freedom, Nelson Mandela's autobiography. What a fantastic account of a truly remarkable life. As it's rather long, probably perfect for a holiday.

  12. Although McCarthy is very frustrating because he appears to be a tad lazy at times, opposition supporters invariably think he's superb. This is from an Everton message board........

Only gonna make one comment for now with regards to the game, and thats how impressed i was with Blackburns front two. Especially in the first half. They ran the game. They were actually awesome. Blackburn looked for them very early in their attacks, and they always made something of it. Roque Cruz is very impressive in the air, has a bit of pace about him, has a cracking first touch, and as seen in the game, and before the game in their warm ups, and from what ive seen of his so far, has a cracking finish on him. We all know what McCarthy can do, and im only surprised no-one has come in for him to take him onto bigger things, because the lad is quality.

That 45 minute spell in the first half, was possibly the best half of football ive seen from a striking partnership in a long time. I dont just mean individually, because there are better individuals out their, but they together we awesome today, esp as i said, in the first 45mins. Was very impressed.

  13. If you only read one book ever again, let it be this.

Well I've just ordered it as well, though it's 4-6 weeks delivery from Amazon. Keep at the Aubrey/Maturin sea sagas. I'm on the ninth now ( Treason's Harbour ) and although some are better than others, I'm always shipped off into another world. ;) Generally they really are superb.
