  1. Uefa Cup for me. Having followed the Rovers for 40 years there are still 2 things that I haven't experienced - the FA Cup (always thought it a possibility) or a European trophy (beyond my wildest dreams).

If we forget the Uefa in favour of the League then what's the point in qualifying? It sounds too much like Souness - "survival is the first piority - at any costs!!". What happened to ambition?

Obviously don't want to go down and actually can't believe it's a serious topic of conversation at this stage - altjough we were abysmal the other night ... and that's stretching things. Why should one competition adversely affect another anyway? Look what happened when we won the League Cup - our season started there.

If "sacrificing" the Uefa for the league was ever a consideration - and I can't believe it is - then that would be a massive insult to all those who have travelled around Europe so far...spending hard-earned cash in doing so.

However - choice between FA Cup and Uefa Cup? Now that's a question. :)

NB At least until early January!!!!!

  2. Why do you not sell out the ground?

Tell you what, halve the population of Reading, halve the income of the ones left, stick a Premiership club in Henley, another in Wokingham, move Man U and Man City to Maidenhead, Liverpool and Everton to Slough and promote Pangbourne into League 2 and tell me why Reading don't sell out the Madejski.

What do you think of Reading?

No-one else needs to answer that one now - fantastic reply! But PLEASE don't move the Mancs to Maidenhead - far too close.

Any finally - tell me some Interesting fact about your club?

The only club in the world still to have won major trophies in the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty first centuries.

Nice one - didn't realise that.

  3. I'd have to say Sellars. Stood on the terracing as a lad watching Scottie weave his magic with that left foot. Definately not the best left sided player we've had but he stands out for me cos of the memories l have of him terrorising some poor right back.

Others would have to be Tugay, Shearer, Duff and 110% Hendry who still gives it everything after watching The Match on Sunday)

Go along with the Sellars bit.

    But also:

Speedie - for a small bloke he couldn't half jump and somehow always seemed to hang in the air. Always felt we would score with him playing.

Duncan MacKenzie - especially against Coventry in the FA Cup - still one of the greatest individual performances I've ever seen. He destroyed them.

  4. That must have been the most amazing game to have been at. I can remember perhaps two games in the 40 odd years I've been following football in which 4 goals have been scored in 5 minutes but for 4 goals to be scored on the last three minutes + injury time is something else.

I wonder if football attendances are falling because two many fans like posters above have zero imaginations and no sense of the wonder and potency of football?

I wonder how many early leavers thought Brighton had won 1-0. :D

  5. By paying Sky an astronomical amount of money to carry Rovers TV for a few hours, flogging the rights of the match to Rovers TV (which I presume is a seperate company - so could be a useful "tax dodge")

Come on Tris, you know how easy that would be to do. :o

Tris - as you don't seem to be doing anything important over the next few days maybe you can arrange!!! :D

  6. Why have we got the hump?

You've got to remember the context. This was pre-Jack Walker remember and the thought of little old cash-strapped Blackburn Rovers getting into the top league was almost inconcievable. We'd bounced around the (old) 2nd and 3rd divisions for nearly 30 years and had only really come close to getting into the top division once during that period. However, the year before we'd made the play-offs (got beat in the semi by Chelsea) and our then manager, Don Mackay, had put together a good team - probably our best since the early 60's.

We scraped past Watford in the play-off semi-final and absolutely murdered your lot in the home leg at Ewood. It finished 3-1 to us but it could easily have been 5 or 6 (we missed a penalty as well if I remember right).

Still, no worries, off we all trooped to Selhurst Park full of confidence that we could hold onto our two goal lead. Then it all started to go horribly wrong:

    - It was my first visit to Selhurst and I couldn't believe how hard it was to find

    - We were crammed onto an open, crumbling terrace as far into the corner as was humanly possible giving us a totally crap view of the match

    - George Courtney gave you the softest of penalties

    - When you got the equaliser (on aggregate) a load of your fans piled onto the pitch. Instead of forcing them off and back onto the terraces, the police just allowed them to stand on the touchline. The ref should have taken the players off, but he allowed play to continue and every time the ball went out one of our players was treated to close quarter physical and verbal abuse.

    - When you got the 3rd goal all the fans piled onto the pitch again and this time they wouldn't leave it for ages. Again, the ref refused to take the players off.

    - Garner missed a chance in the dying seconds that would have taken the match to penalties.

    - At full-time f<(king "Glad All Over" was played repeatedly, at high volume, for what seemed like an eternity.

    - After the match, when we were all feeling so depressed it was untrue, we were treated to all sorts of abuse from Palace fans who were supposed to happy at gaining promotion.

I've got nothing against Palace as a club, I just hate Selhurst Park. I've been back 4 or 5 times since and I still hate the place - too many bad vibes. As Gav says, it was my lowest moment as a Rovers fan and one I'll remember until my dying day.

Well done Scotty - sums it up perfectly.

Seeing "grown men" in tears, throwing away their blue & white scarves at the end - the lowest point in my Rovers career too.

We'd waited so long and then - it was snatched from us ... and in those circumstances. It's difficult to explain to a third party but my non-Rovers friends who were with me on the day still don't let me forget it ... they'd never seen anything like it either.

It started to go wrong during the warm-up in my opinion - we just didn't look confident enough.

Been back lots of times since but still hate the place.

  7. according to the official site

there are just over 50 tickets left for sale

    That's good then.

And some good news about service from BRFC:

As a non season ticket holder living down t'south my application went in a couple of days ago. The ticket office have just phoned my mobile to let me know that my tickets are being sent out today. Not bad, eh?

  8. Reading all the cr@p on the travel thread it certainly pays to organize your own transport.

We were considering a new banner but didn't get around to ordering it so maybe for a later round if we get through. The other consideration was what to have printed on the thing? Wanted something original? Or something derogatory aimed at our claret friends, small town in europe is a great idea but thats already been done.........

Have a flag that says "Wot, no Bovril!!" but FIFA wouldn't allow it onto the ground because Bovril were not an official sponsor!! It now says "Wot, no £$%*&"!!" which is acceptable!! But it does have the Rovers crest on it too. May be seen at a venue close to you very soon! :)

  9. 1989..the 3rd Crystal Palace goal with all their fans round the pitch and us lot stuck in the corner.

Worse than any relegation, worse even than the Cantona pen after Berg's sending off(totally wrongly) versus Man U in 1990s.

It was so bad...all 3... that any Rovers supporter who went in any quiz always says it was the lowest point.

Still sick thinking about it..27 years later!!

Hate to disappoint - but it's only 17 years!!!! It'll probably hurt forever though. Apparently I tried to run over someone on a pedestrian crossing on the way home ... but that's just urban myth that I totally deny. But it WAS bad!!!

What about Jamie Redknapp's free kick at Anfield? For about 20 seconds our dreams had been completely shattered. And then ...

Trelleborg's equaliser just after Shearer had "put us through". Will never forget the local Trelleborg "character" in the main stand who decided to pick me up (brave man) and hug me to celebrate!!!
