  1. Very good article on the whole subject.. :tu:

    Click me

"..The simple answer is that there is no simple answer - ask 10 different people involved in youth development and you get 10 different answers....

And that is perhaps why the ongoing review of the academy system has been going on so long." - BBC

EDIT: More academy news, this time Crewe Click me

  2. I dont think anyone is saying he's forced into playing. It was just an enquiry wasnt it?

Yep - Just curious, as I thought the same as FLB... 4 YEARS?!?

I think it is clear either Turkey is lacking in up incoming young talent or they have a series of player injuries?

.. and its a friendly not a competative game? Very strange.

I mean the guy has 92 caps already, but as you said LeChuck, not much we can do if he wants to play (mind you, there is nothing he can do either, as FIFA will enforce him to do so)

    From Stu's link

["Makelele has not retired. He plays for a club, and he has a soccer player's license," said Domenech.

"As long as he is performing, he will play. I have the right to pick him."

Domenech insisted that Fifa rules provide national associations with backing in disputes with clubs over international selection"]

    Guess that answers my question..

  3. They can't make them play, or turn up for the national team, but they can suspend them from playing for their club team - it was threatened last season with someone, might have been Gallas?

    Thanks of the info Stu.

I still can't believe it.. :o How is this possible? is it based on the assumption that... if your fit enought to play club football and get paid, then you have the ability to play for your country, if required?

I am genuinely shocked by this!

...and I think it was Makelele last year.

  4. Ste B @ Feb 3 2007, 12:20

According to the LET, Toogs has had an international call up for this weeks friendly in Georgia, 3 years after he "retired"

Read about this earlier too. Here is the link... Click me

Can I ask to someone that knows... If a player declares himself fully retired from international football, can his country enforce him to play (thorugh FIFA)?

If so, thats bloody disgraceful! ...I mean the guy is nearly 37 (and he's not a keeper)! This potentially makes our midfield even smaller..:(

Intersting to note, that Tugay may come up against Zurab at the Lokomotivi Stadium next week.

  5. Yes, I was there, missed the first 5 minutes, at the end thought it was 1-0 to Middlesbrough. :o

Pretty even game with very few chances, front two of Garner and Derbyshire looked lightweight and had very little service, the defence looked solid (except for the goal), Todd/Matteo/Taylor did ok, McEveley I thought was our best player some excellent crosses. Peter was poor, Gray did well in midfield.

De Vita was lucky 90 seconds after coming on to only receiving a yellow card for an elbow.

I thought Enkleman was injured, but heard he was away with the Finnish national side?

    Thank you :tu:

  6. TrimmTrab's post is just nonsense. There are 80 teams still left in the UEFA Cup and I'm sure the 40 remaining after tonight will look different to his list..

Your right there Scotty - Marseille, Schalke and Hertha are all out of the UEFA Cup (thank god). Also, Besiktas might soon follow..

EDIT: Besiktas, WHam & Lokomotiv Moscow are all out too..

  7. Mark Bowen to leave for WBA?

"Mark Hughes has played down reports Mark Bowen is set for West Bromwich Albion Football Club.

It had been speculated that the Blackburn Rovers assistant manager was set to replace the sacked Bryan Robson at the Hawthorns, yet this has been played down by the Ewood Park chief.

"I've spoken to him about it, but it's pure speculation. I've spoken to him about the situation and it won't be going any further," said Hughes, who hopes to take the Lancashire side through to the Uefa Cup group stages on Thursday."

    Any truth in this?

  8. I thought he only had something like 3 international caps, which makes it unlikely that he is the captain. I think LuaLua is their main striker.

In fact I just checked on Soccerbase, and it says he has never played for his country!?! I'm surprised if that's true.

I thought his international record was 2 Caps and 1 goal. This was before his injury (2002), I don't think he has been recalled since.

These are the only games I could find, both 2002 AFC:

    1. January 26, 2002; Congo DR 0-0 Togo

    2. January 29, 2002; Congo DR* 3-1 Côte d'Ivoire

    *Scored in this game

Although this shows something completely different.. Nonda's International profile? <_<

Anyway an article from the man himself..Todays LET article

  9. I wonder if a lucrative (and no doubt bung laden ;) ) move at the end of this season might just be in his mind? <_<

    Your unbelievable!

He is played in a different position for the club for the first time in 3 years (since arriving here) and you now say he is aiming for his move away, by playing well? Always finding a negative in a positive eh? :)

Just be happy he is playing well in his 'more preferred' position...

oh and as TDI said earlier - It will be interesting to see both T4E's and Capt KAYOS's opinion after 10 games on our Bert. ;)

No, he often played as a right wing-back, which isn't the same as a conventional right back.

Yes but, RWB is closer to the duties of a RB than RM..

    Emerton Happy

"I played there before with Feyenoord, ...to be honest, this season has gone well for me and I'm enjoying my football."

  10. Not really happy about the draw, Chelsea will field a reasonable side for the cup game. :(

On the positives, we can beat them, its at home, its penalties after extra time and we should get some television money from this.

    C'MON ROVERS! :brfc::rover:

    The 3rd round draw

    Wycombe v Doncaster

    Sheffield United v Birmingham

    Leicester v Aston Villa

    Watford v Hull

    Leeds v Southend

    Chesterfield v West Ham

    Notts County v Southampton

    Newcastle v Portsmouth

    Charlton v Bolton

    Liverpool v Reading

    West Brom v Arsenal

    Port Vale v Norwich

    Everton v Luton

    MK Dons v Tottenham

    Crewe v Manchester United

    Blackburn v Chelsea

IMO the games; Newcastle V Pompey, Rovers V Chelsea and Leicester V Aston Villa will be the games shown on TV.
