Republic of Ireland international Steven Reid is reported to have completed his move from Millwall to Blackburn Rovers. Manager Graeme Souness, speaking after a friendly at Oldham tonight, told Sky Sports News: "We've signed Steven Reid tonight and I think both Brett and Lorenzo are good signings for us - I feel we will be stronger than this time last year. "It's a four-year deal. I raced over here because discussion went on quite late but my understanding is he has signed now. I'm delighted to have him on board." Souness added: "We've had five players leave the club and I think we've replaced four so we've got a bit to go and we've not spent any of that money yet - this is money we set aside. "We are going to try and be cautious. I've got confidence in the squad and I'm not going to rush out and spend money."

Following early fears that David Thompson will miss the start of the season after limping out of a pre-season friendly on Wednesday against Washington, Rovers insist he only has a minor ankle knock and it will not stop him targeting the opening game of the season against Wolves. Chief executive John Williams told the club's official website: "The pitches over in America have been very hard and David picked up an ankle injury in training. "Early in Wednesday's game he aggravated that and was withdrawn. He will be okay."

Blackburn’s midfield dynamo David Thompson could miss the start of the season with an ankle ligament injury. This is disappointing news for Thompson, after he missed the end of last season due to knee surgery. Thompson picked up the injury whilst playing in Blackburns pre season game against Washington DC. News Updated 17.10 Injury not as bad as originally expected, see addition to this story.

For a team in pre-season form, integrating two (well, I guess actually three) new members, with only a few days practicing together, Rovers looked cohesive, but, at this point, not too threatening. The other thing to remember is that DC United is in mid season form and so was able to buzz about rather tirelessly. I do think, however, that the back line is suspect in handling attackers with speed. United got behind them on both the flanks and in the center way to easily. Overall I'd have to say that United was a much faster team (I have to say that because my daughter made the observation and she is a very good observer of the game). Had Brad stayed in goal Rovers would have won. It was keeper error that enabled United's goal. It was United's secret weapon, Ali Curtis, who had just entered the game, whose speed and persistence started the sequence following a long ball into space down the flank. Ali is very, very fast and fights unrelentingly for the ball. Hudson (United's Geordie manager) played everyone but one. United's starters included a defender who was playing his first professional game. The keeper who stopped the penalty kick was playing his first also. He just graduated from college last year, so has had no professional experience before this year. Oh, and an earlier post asked who Ben Olsen is. He's a capped national player who was injured while on loan to Forrest a couple of years ago (they loved him and he loved them) and is just coming back from a series of operations on his ankle. Much Blue and White in the stands and many in other colors, even some wearing the hated red. And the Cross of St. George flag was flying over the stadium. So we all stood for the anthems of both countries. All in all a very enjoyable night, although I could have done without that shoot out. Why couldn't we just leave it at a draw? That was the fair result, and that's what the majority on United's BigSoccer boards are calling it. Rovers are in good company. DC United have never lost a friendly to an English team--Tottenham, Leeds and Newcastle. Just fortunate that none of these were in mid-season form when the games happened (well, may Tottenham. but neither team took either of the games too seriously). United were serious tonight. Hopefully DC United can make a visit to Ewood as they did to Tottenham this year. That would certainly be all the excuse I'd need to get my butt over there. Cheers to all. It was so good seeing my 'other' team. By seahawkdad on July 24 2003, 06:56

Just got back from the game awhile ago, a really good match and I'm thrilled that I got to see Rovers play for the first time! Interesting match to watch. As American40 said, D.C. had the better of play for the first half, but Cole's strike tipped momentum in Rovers' favor. They dictated (if not dominated) play throughout the second half until there were about ten minutes left. United kept striving forward looking for the equaliser, and now we return to Yelldell's gaffe... First of all, not a great ball played back to him by Neill, but Yelldell should have played it safe. Instead he tried to play back to Neill, and Ali Curtis was able to knock the ball (which was kicked straight into him) across the goalmouth where Carroll waited to stuff it home. It made for two pretty ugly goals on the evening. Still, a classy move by Souness to bring Friedel off to a standing ovation, and I felt bad for Yelldell because he looked a bit nervous. Still big and athletic, though, so he's got the raw talent I suppose. The shootout made for good watching but it was painfully obvious that neither side had their starters in. Yelldell looked active trying to make a save (the same cannot be said for D.C.'s backup netminder) and thus atone for his earlier mistake, but in the end he guessed the wrong way the last four shots. All Rovers (including Emerton, who I'm almost positive took the second kick) slotted their kicks until the keeper made a fine save on Todd's shot and then Nissa drove wide to end it. A great match, Rovers looked far more comfortable in possession than D.C. and it looks like they're well on their way to being ready for the season to start. By Philly Rover at 6.19 24 July 2003

First... Friedel is God. No ####, God. He made a couple of amazing saves, and a few really really good ones. Seems to be in mid season form. DC had the run of play the first half, quite a few dangerous chances, Rovers only had a few. I TOLD you that announcer was unbelievable. Amoruso is stroooong. Rovers picked it up in the second half, had more of the ball, but not many clear chances. Friedel - yes, Yelldell - no. Rovers midfield needs some work. (Reyna would help, really). Great move by Souness to put Yelldell in. On one hand, it really was, for the yank fans. Gave us yanks a chance to cheer Friedel off, he got a standing ovation. On the other hand, it really was, for DC united fans. Gave them a chance to get a win! DC goal had two causes. Ali Curtis speed and determination. Whoever the defender was underestimated both, and Curtis managed to for him to pass to Yelldell who was 'under duress'. Second, Yelldell blew it, didn't just blast the ball out of the area, gave Curtis a chance to tip it to Brian Carroll who puts in the sitter for the equalizer. Yelldell drops a cross (or corner, can't remember). Luckily for him, no DC player near. He seemed poor on the penalties, too. Very unsure. DC's backup keeper seemed much more sure of himself. It was nice to end the friendly on penalties, no matter who the winner was, it was great for the fans. Friedel, god. Amoruso played well. Cole/Yorke quick, but didn't create that many chances. Emerton looked good. Galliger/Oestenstad were non factors. Yelldell needs work. Overall, Rovers started slow, but that may have been due to DC playing well. Three Englishmen behind me commented a few times that "DC is a decent side!". They seemed surprised by the quality. Rovers played better in the second half, but need some midfield help. Played most of the second have with Galliger/Oestenstad, which didn't help. Overall, a good first game for the preseason for Rovers. By that I mean better than playing some 9th division club team and winning 10-0. This showed where work needs to be done. I TOLD you the announcer was whacky! And, finally, it didn't rain! Millwall have given the Republic of Ireland winger Steven Reid permission to talk to Blackburn Rovers. Reid is quoted on the Millwall web site as saying. "This is a good opportunity for me to go and talk to them and see what they have to say," "There has been a lot of speculation, but something's happened and now I'm either staying at Millwall or I'm not." "I've never really been away from London for more than a month or so, so it would be a big upheaval if I was to go and it's going to be the most difficult decision of my life. "The chairman and manager have made it clear that they don't want me to go, so there's no pressure on me to leave the club. "It's a decision I'm going to think long and hard about and hopefully make the right one."

Forget the performance on the playing field, speculation, rumours and gossip, is the fundamental element of football that makes the game so addictive.Whist success on the playing field will raise the profile and attendances of a club, it’s the tabloid headlines that grab the attention of the supporters on a daily basis. With so many conflicting stories regarding the transfer of Damian Duff, Blackburn Rovers supporters are currently typical of this trend, searching for every snippet of news relating to their club in the press and media. In recent weeks Blackburn supporters have had the protracted transfers associated with the sale of David Dunn to Birmingham and the signing of Lorenzo Amoruso from Rangers plus the surprise signing of Australian International Brett Emerton. Last week was the sudden departure of Craig Hignett on a free transfer to Leicester. As the new season draws nearer Blackburn’s players will commence the annual pre season friendlies, starting this week (Wednesday) at D.C.Washington in the USA, their supporters meanwhile will be searching for rumours, gossip and concrete information on whether Duff will decide to join Chelski or once again grace the emerald green turf at Ewood Park in the blue and white halves, plus who manager Graeme Souness will strengthen the squad with. Blackburn have had agreed to transfer, as a result of the get out clause in Duffs contract that was renewed last year. Speaking to the BBC, Blackburn chief executive John Williams admitted: "There's a massive financial up side to selling him which can never be underestimated in the post-Jack Walker era. "But our football instinct currently prevails and we don't want him to go. "We know Chelsea can entice Damien with the lure of Champions League football but we want him to stay here and try and achieve that with us." Blackburn supporters can now only wait and see what developments occur over the next few days.

As posted by den on the message board. Superb conference. Main points: Emerton, Amoruso, Yeldell, Williams and Souey in attendance. Duff - Souey says we have no intention of selling him, he was one of the draws in attracting the new players, however he can't guarantee that Chelsea wont come back in. Gresko - flies into man tonight. Fee and personal terms agreed, but needs medical on broken foot. Also needs work permit that could take until end of month. 3 year deal. Asked if spending's finished, Souey said simply - NO! Souey thinks the squad is already considerably stronger than last year. Souey says he has never known as many clubs in for one man, as there were for Emerton, and he is absolutely delighted in getting him to ewood. Amoruso said people think he is over confident, but he doesn't care! Souey said Yeldell will get a chance in the first team this season, probably in the cup games. 3 year deal. Huge guy, very athletic. If I can remember any more, I'll come back with it. for more on this story and what the supporters think check out the site message board, there is no need to register to read the topics
