I would argue that stats can give a misleading representation of the game. Look at our game last week at Watford people on here were raving about the shots and possession we had and if you looked at the stats you'd have though we battered Watford but when you used you eyes you would have seen that we were comfortably beaten by a side who were happy to sit back and counter and never needed to get out of 2nd gear. The score is the only story that matters you don't get any bonus points for having good stats.

You have proven my point. I don't agree with that analysis of what happened. I thought we were the better side apart from some calamitous defending... I might be right, you might be right. How about we look at some unbiased stats to help us determine what the really happened, so we can build for the next game? That's the point. They provide an opinion to help you that has no preconceptions, isn't impacted by mood, fatigue etc. etc.

Goals scored and conceded are the only stats that have a bearing on where you finish in the table. Some people like to obsess over other stats but at the end of the day they are obsolete in the grand scheme of things.

It's an incredibly flawed model. If you really want to know these sort of things use your eyes instead of flawed stats.

Stats help you look forwards/predict and are an unbiased representation of what happened. A football result is never the whole story and, as much as we try not to be, every human is inherently biased.

Data is everywhere and, like it or not, now powers the world. And the last industries/businesses to embrace it will be (/ have already been) left behind. Football is no different.

Nyambe is going I'd say in may.

Hopefully next game isnt the same back 4 as 4 seaons ago...

Didn't realise we'd resigned Jason Lowe, Tommie Hoban and Gordon Greer.

Or if you're stretching the definition of 4 seasons...
Paul Caddis, Elliot Ward and have brought Charlie Mulgrew in from the cold.

    What a squad that was!

Paul Robinson, Nyambe, Hanley, Shane Duffy, M Olsson, Ben Marshall, Evans, Cairney, Conway, Rhodes, Gestede, Josh King, Lenihan, Jack O'Connell (!), Mahoney, David Dunn, Raya,

Incredible with that squad and Gestede/Rhodes with 20+ goals a piece could not reach the play-offs.

Over 120 goals conceded in our 2 nearly years. 4 keepers sharing the games (including a past it Robbo, Raya who was just a kid, Eastwood and Jake Kean) and massively unsettled defence. We must have played over 10 different CB partnerships in those 2 years. Between Duffy, Kilgallon, Hanley, Spurr, Baptiste, Keane and Dann. That's before you even mention the plethora of different fullbacks we played as well.

And thinking about it, I couldn't even hazard a guess at what our first choice back 4 was either year. Or even CB pairing. Or keeper. It was all over the place back there.

You could well be right, for what it's worth my perception of Reading is that they rely pretty heavily on their talented but unreliable forwards, Joao, Puskas and Meite. Could be wrong, and in fairness Swift looks a good player too.

With a new manager who has no experience of the league, I had them down as more likely to be looking over their shoulder for relegation rather than going up, let's see.

Joao went off with a dislocated shoulder at the weekend. Could be a couple of months out.

[EDIT] And Swift is out until Christmas I think.

    This is incorrect.
Rovers really are not a big ‘company’ in terms of turnover (perhaps in terms of the public eye they are) and £320k is a large CEO base salary.

Mercer hit the nail on the head regards dividends, shares, bonuses etc. This is how most CEOs contracts are structured. Some incentive to improving performance

Lets be frank, he is grossly overpaid and it is not justified at all.

As of last season, it seems it's a bang average championship CEO wage... https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-8262315/Physios-191-000-kit-men-56-000-Crazy-wages-dont-add-EFL-clubs-brink.html well, just shy of 5k over... £295,179. Providing you believe the Nazi Digest anyway.

Maybe leader was an incorrect summary. Our results with and without Lenihan are vastly different, obviously Lenihan will head stuff away, I do think Adarabioyo and Williams together was not a good partnership because they arent as dominant as Lenihan. I would like to think that if Ayala came in and partnered Wharton or Williams, then that might be a better alternative.

I agree with all that. The leader thing just jumped out at me because we've been short a proper captain and someone who marshals the defence for years. It SHOULD be Lenihan's job, I just don't think he's very good at it.

Proper leader, experienced but not too old and a track record of being in good defences at this level.

Also, Adarabioyo was good but when Lenihan didnt play, Adarabioyo and Williams lacked leadership. Ayala means that we have 2 leaders back there.

Lenihan isn't a leader. It's a major frustration. Where is the rallying when we concede, the congratulations when the keeper makes a save or one of the defence puts in a block, the pressurising of the ref or getting in the opposition's face when they dive or put in a bad tackle on one of our players?

For all his faults, Bennett is a better "leader".

I have those stats as slightly different. Probably just down to the way the minutes on the pitch are collected, but I have it as slightly under 2 points per game and a 98 ish mins per goal against.

Either way that's automatic promotion standard. Mentioned this pairing (along with Bell and Bennett as the full backs) in the transfer window thread about a month ago as being by far and away our best defensive setup last year.

Also the fact that we were good defensively at home last year (I think we were 5th best at home off the top of my head). Our biggest problems that needed addressing were our defence away from home and our goal scoring record - particularly at home.

I think the success of the window will be determined by how our front players gel in the coming weeks and months - given goals get you out of this league and the money we've spent to get them. Let's not forget that of the front 4 yesterday, only Dack and Armstrong had started more than 3 competitive games together.

Feckin hell - two months to decide that!

Good and well managed organisations have something known as 'succession planning' - it isn't rocket science.

Seems like we've gone for the cheapest options with little or no creative thinking shown.

An input of new blood and 'fresh eyes' works wonders in most organisations.

Succession planing is about promoting from within. Or more specifically, hiring people for the future, developing them and promoting them when the time comes that a higher up moves on.

    Your point makes no sense.

No idea if it's a good appointment or not and I'd guess everyone else on here is in the same position if they're honest about it.

    Evasive!

And that's not true. I may believe the correct decision to get to Scotland is to head south from Leeds but it doesn't make it the right decision.

What do you think the evidence shows?

To be fair the "evidence" shows we conceded less goals per game and won more points per game with Bennett at right back than Nyambe.

    I'd still pick Nyambe mind.
