Wash plenty of times in cold water before cooking, until the water runs clear. It's all the "dust" that makes it claggy. Finish off on medium in the microwave to dry it out a touch. Give it a few minutes & stir to let the steam out then another session in the pinger.

I find myself struggling to come to terms with the wider concepts that that raises.

Before I even consider going to Gino's on King William St it is a complete write off. Openly advertising as a 'Hallal Italian' is an abomination. Hallal killing of animals is cruel and completely, totally, unequivocably unecessary in this day and age. There really is no excuse!! One has to put up with the thought of it in IndoPak establishments but it's spread to the subway near Qegs and now some effin pseudo and presumably catholictillidie Italian has deemed ritual slaughter acceptable! It's absolute ###### and before someone takes up their cudgel please rem that NO ONE CAN DEFEND THE INDEFENSIBLE!

Oh give us a break. You scoff dead animals, and you don't care how they are slaughtered. If you did actually care then you'd be one of them bleeding-heart vegetarians.

This being a food thread I hope it's appropriate to share a wonderful receipe I tried this Christmas; Basmati and Wild Rice Stuffing with Kumquats and Cranberries.

I cooked this last night.

Ahem, Sort of. I dropped the butter in favour of olive oil; I couldn't find wild rice so I did all basmati;(which btw is best soaked & rinsed in warm water several times before cooking;) I couldn't find kumquats to I settled on lychees & apricots. Oh, & I used macadame & cashews. The pistachios were wildly expensive.

Apart from that it was the same.

One thing I don't understand is why people my age (28) or younger starts using the hard stuff like heroin. You see the storylines in soaps and films so often, where characters start doing it and it feels good until they're falling into a life whereby they're sucking off some violent thug or stabbing a granny for their next fix. Those stories are everywhere, and we get told about about it at school and yet people carry onn having a go. Odd really.

One explanation I've read about is that young people get the message that all illegal drugs are bad and evil. Then they smoke a joint, have a good time and a laugh and wake up the next day without a hangover and the world carries on as normal. No damage at all.

So that message failed, so maybe heroin is just the same, maybe people think. I'll try a bit of that. And before you know where you are you're spending the budget on the next fix and looking for more.

The cannabis dealership is sort of relaxed. The cocaine & heroin is a bit more intense & nasty. They want to get people addicted to keep the trade going.

I've taken heroin. It was a long time ago, I've not had any for 20 years. It was a wonderful warm feeling, like being given a lovely gentle massage by a beautiful woman. (or Bradd Pitt if your reading this & you're female.)

I can understand that if your life is @#/? and you get a shot of heroin that makes you feel better then you may be really tempted to have another go. Then another one. Then that third one. Then you're screwed. Then you nick your Mum's purse to get the next fix.

That Cafe in Levenshulme is an old favourite of mine ..Aint been for a few years though..Has a few Veggie option but not many.Very good and traditional..Might make you something veggie to order..Maybe give then a ring first ..Check their website

East of Eden by John Steinbeck...a classic I only got around to recently but a great read. Bit long as well as dawdling in parts but there are also some sublime parts and fantastic characters. Particularly the villainess of the piece.

Yup, excellent book. So ambitious and Steinbeck pulls it off. I agree that it does dawdle but that was inevitable considering he wanted to write about a series of generations. Very thought-provoking.

Incidentally, anyone read Grapes of Wrath and/or Ulysses?

I've read "East Of Eden" & "Grapes Of Wrath." Both eminantly readable and worth the effort. "Ulysses" is just about unreadable unless you are on LSD & playing "Trout Mask Replica" backwards though headphones. Same as "Finnegan's Wake."

The Know by Martina Cole centres on life in East London and the events leading up and subsequent to a child abduction.

Did the Three Fishes at Mitton at the weekend.

Pretty good, I think I got the best deal. The 84 year old didn't have the appetite to finish off the main course (although it was appreciated) and the 14 year old got unfilleted Fleetwood fish, so the bones were a bit of a chore.

The sweets were grand though.

Despite being written by a woman it's actually not a bad yarn.

Good to see this thread back up to the top again. Anyway, one one of the most interesting books I've read over the past couple of weeks has been Marina Hyde's "Celebrity: How Entertainers Took Over the World and Why We Need an Exit Strategy," It's an expose of "famous" people who think that just because they have made £ millions from being in the fame industry, they have the right to pontificate on world affairs.

She rips the silly sods to shreds.

Indeed, but there's possibly the suggestion here that "expensive" equates with "good." The most expensive truffle weighted 1.5kg and sold for £165,000.

I know that's silly, but you get my gist. Great cooking and food can be made from the simplest & cheapest ingredients.

Fresh home-made bread; a slab of real Lancashire cheese; local butter; a few home-grown tomatoes & chives. Luxury.

You've got more concentration than I. "Trainspotting" is written in Scottish venacular and is as difficult to comprehend as "Ulysses."

Both made my brain hurt & I gave up on both after about 10 pages.

If you were up on the Castle and looked north, towards the church, it would be as good as down below.

Or in driving in a car terms, ignore the bypass and come in through Whalley & Barrow. Straight on at the "Brown Cow" roundabout. Up the hill. Get to the top and turn left. It's a few metres on the right as you go downhilll with the castle on your left.

The last time I went on a mini crawl around Clitheroe it was just about the only one that didn't have a disco on. I think it's still a decent pub.

Mrs CLB and I organise a Ribble Valley pub crawl with a coach each summer.
