  1. A few years ago I read a book A Short History of Tractors in Ukranian, about the same time I became aware of but never read another called Salmon Fishing in the Yemen which I assumed was just another bizarre book title.

I've read both those books, & enjoyed them. I was really surprised to see "Salmon Fishing In The Yemem" made into a film, but I'm looking forward to seeing it. I'm looking forward to see if anyone can convert "A Short History of Tractors in the Ukriane"

    into a film.

And your local film club sounds a brilliant idea. Long may it continue.

  2. I went to see "First Aid Kit" at Manchester Academy a few weeks ago. A Sewdish folk duo consisting of two sisters. OK, I hear you recoil in horror at folk music, but they write some cracking catchy tunes and both the CDs are well worth listening to.

You can catch them on youtube no problem.

I was most impressed when they moved from behind the microphones and sang unamplified, the whole place just went silent and listened.

    Lovely.

Their Dad works the sound desk and the drummer on the night was allowed to speak: "It's rather strange being on tour with two sisters." I think that was a Finbar Saunders & His Double Entendres moment.

  3. Stiff Little Fingers - Johnny Was

Woman hold her head and cry

Cause her son had been shot down

    in the street and died

    From a stray bullet

Woman hold her head and cry

    Accompanying her was a passerby

    Who saw the woman cry

Wondering can she work it out

    Now she knows that the

    wages of sin is death

The gift of God is life

    Oh, oh, oh, oh

    Johnny was a good man

    oh yeah

Woman hold her head and cry

Cause her son had been shot down

    in the street and died

    Just because of the system

Woman hold her head and cry

Comforting her I was passing by

And I saw the woman cry

She cried, oh, oh, oh, oh

    Johnny was a good man

    Never did a thing wrong

Johnny went out on a Saturday night

    Never hurt anybody never

    started no bar room fight

Johnny never did nobody no wrong

Never hurt anybody never hurt anybody

    Johnny was a good man

    Johnny, Johnny, Johnny...

    Johnny was a good man

In a top floor flat in the

    middle of the night

There's a man with rifle and

    Johnny in his sight,

I said oh no, we can't let

    that kind of thing happen

    here no more

    Oh no

    Johnny, Johnny, Johnny...

A single shot rings out in a

Belfast night and I said oh

    Johnny was a good man

    Can a woman's tender care

Cease towards the child she bears
