Yes definitely. Beards were an oddity in those days. Very good player and driving force behind that great Villa team that won the European Cup.

yes I remember him as seriously good player in an excellent Villa team - the only other beards that come to mind immediatelyaround then  were Frank Lampard and Bob Latchford - im sure there must have been others..

That one got me ejected from the Turd, the day Keith Fear scored and Rovers won a nervy end to end match many years ago...Big police inspector collared me and shouted "what did you say?" and I was stupid enough to repeat it, which gave him licence to have me thrown out..

    Them were the days!

The Keith Fear thing always makes me smile - got on to the Longside 20 mins late Rovers 2 up - no one could see much and everyone around saying Jack Lewis is unrecognisable today - they hadn't realised we had signed Fear on loan - from that  distance they looked similar !1818608165_keithfear.jpg.e9d61683f0219dd07949cfb8f29230f3.jpgjack-lewis-grimsby-town-fc-footballer-box-707-6030816120-a-jpg-shutterstock-editorial-5900633a.thumb.jpg.d863c0ab8b255d1e3523ae562f243c65.jpg

5th Feb 1980. Nearly 40 years ago ! That makes me feel old. 1-1 draw

    There was 29, 468 on.

    Our team -

    Jim Arnold

Jim Branagan, Glenn Keeley, Derek Fazackerley, Mick Rathbone.

Noel Brotherston, Howard Kendall, Tony Parkes

    Duncan McKenzie

    Andy Crawford, Simon Garner.

Alan Evans og was our scorer. Andy Crawford had scored in all 5 previous ties that season.

If we had that back five today I'd fancy us to go up. If they played the current team the current lads would need a goal start. How many of those would you drop for a current player ? Crawford for Armstrong ? Parkes for Dack ? After that it's a struggle.

We were really unlucky to lose the replay.

Not sure about Dack on the left of a 3 there - doesn't have Tony Parkes' work rate - not sure how he would gel with Mckenzie either. Kaminski might be as good as Arnold and Nyambe v Branagan might be close. Mick Rathbone - yes every time!

who can forget the inimitable "you`re gonna get you`re ****** head kicked in" or the gentle ditty "you`re going home in an east lancs ambulance"i miss the days when you could remind the opposing player that his wife was rumoured to be  a bit of lady of easy virtue, remember the blackburn end giving the west ham striker tony morley loads of abuse after  his wife stabbed him in the backside over some alleged affair🤭

I think that was before the reorganisation of the NHS - I always heard it as F******g ambulance though I prefer your version - just needs a mission statement after along the lines of 'patient professional and caring ' or some such twaddle

It's a shame his name became synonymous with missing sitters-it began that season after promotion-because he scored plenty to help us win promotion under Gordon Lee!

True but my other abding memory was him heading over from underneath the crossbar at the BBE but cant remember who against.....

That could be another thread - biggest misses by a Rovers player.......

We often reminisce about this fantastic goal. A wonderful, flowing move. The only bit where my memory differs from yours  is that I am sure that Beamo finally put the ball in with his head, when it looked easier to use his foot?

I was in BBE at the time and was fairly sure he sliced it in off his foot but could be mistaken - with Beamo you were never sure which anatomical part it was coming off other than the likelihood of it missing by some distance........ ?

  7. I throw this one in for the 70s crowd

    Ken Beamish v Luton 76

From memory Faz ? won ball somewhee near Rovers goal line at Darwen end- passed to Metcalfe - passed to Parkes took it over half way line passed out to Kevin Hird storming up right wing - clipped cross in met by Beamo on the voley into the top corner at BBE - (ok it may or may not have sliced off his foot being Beamo ?)

Whole move was probably less than 10seconds

Am I the only one that remembers this??

    Eyal berkovic

    john Curtis

    lee carsley

I know the latter left under a cloud , but they all put in solid performances on a consistent basis and never really get mentioned . Just first three that came to mind

    david Thompson was another

Berkovic definitely Thompson too really good for us - carsley maybe but played out of position sometimes. I'll throw in Tony Parkes and at risk of board meltdown Grabbi who was never played in his best position or maybe managed optimally...

Oh dear I was hoping nobody would ask me that. The last time I had to deal with these was in 1970 for three months. Most of my time then was spent removing and replacing broken loom crank shafts and not actually working on running machines. Here I go making a fool of myself. The diagrams you are looking at are an actual cross section of the weaving process.  As I remember it the " Sley ", carrying the " Reed ", rocks back and forth off a lower pivot tightening up the cloth as it goes. The Reed itself is a frame carrying lots of vertical wires, the threads ( warp ? ) goes between the wires. The " Healds" shoot up and down in conjunction with the sley allowing the shuttle carrying the weft to weave the cloth. I'll ask my mum next time we speak for the real info. She ran a dozen " Northrop " Automatic Battery looms which were actually made in Blackburn, I believe the late Fred Pickering started out as an apprentice at " Northrop's ".

I can't be the only one on here who's seen a loom working surely. Blackburn was a textile town with lots of weaving sheds back in the day.

Very impressed Tyrone- I'll need to read my book more closely - remember Dad talking a lot about warps and wefts - sad fact of how little of this knowledge remains in what was once a textile town, still have a few of his designs though

There are some videos on British Pathe too including Dad in the design studio - albeit in Burnley........

In the article it refers to " Harry Oates & Sons " being the makers of " Reeds & Healds ". I worked in a weaving shed during my engineering apprenticeship for about 3 months repairing looms so those are some of the terms I recall from long ago.

From my Dads 'Modern Textile Design and Production' 1949 Edition 42 Shillings !!....... Maybe Tyrone can explain - I haven't  a clue !
