[Archived] Rovers fans in Perth, Western Australia?

I have just recently arrived in Perth, WA and wanted to know if there was any rovers fans here who have a pub which they gather at, supporters clubs or anything similar?

I have been having a knightmare trying to catch any of the games in the pub. I spent 2 hours trailing round pubs near to the city trying to watch the Rovers v Arsenal game but with no luck at all.

Any info would be appreciated.

Cheers.

I'm in sydney, there's a few fellow rovers supporters I've met over the years here but we're pretty rare... Apart from the friendlies last year, I don't think I've seen anyone apart from me wearing a rovers kit since the mid 90's lol. You'll want to get yourself a foxtel subscription, you'll able to see most games that way.

Alright I spent 2 weeks in Perth for the Ashes test there last december and so I got to know it well. It's a pity because I stayed with 2 mates from darwen (rovers fans) but they have recently moved on to sydney.

Your best bet for the football is 'the lucky shag' bar. It's where the England Cricket barmy army had their headquarters for the cricket. It's by the Swan River, 5-10 mins walk from the centre. A lot of ex pats drink in there, I assume they have Fox Sports, because my mates used to watch games in there.

There is also the Moon pub in the centre, an English Pub, but i dont think they have Fox Sports.

You may struggle though given that English footy is shown late night, and so best bet may be to purchase Fox Sports at your home, which shows every premier league game on the red button, but it is stupidly expensive

Okay, well I might drop you a PM when I move across! Whereabouts in Sydney are you?

I'm in Sydney and Crazy Ivan has just moved here as well. We met up for a few beers for the Arsenal game. I've just about recovered.

Supergrabbi, apologies, if i knew you were here I'd have sent you a PM to meet up for the match. Next time.

You lucky lad, Dan; there are Rovers' fans in Perth, which I visit every couple of years or so and LOVE. Not all of them are members of this Board, though.

When I'm there, I stay with a friend, originally from "Snuffy 'Arrod" who emigrated as a "£10 Pom" in the days when you could do that. When I'm there, though, we tend to listen to a Rovers' game on the BBC World Service, rather than going into town to try to catch it on TV. That may say something about our er, "maturity", if you know what I mean! ;)

I'm with david brent in recommending the Lucky Shag [whether or not Rovers are on the TV!].

However, I've also watched sport in a couple of pubs [notably the Brass Monkey] in Northbridge around William Street, where many of the buses stop on their way from the suburbs to the Busport. The problem may be that their TVs are more likely to be tuned to Rugby Union or, in season, Aussie Rules and it might be difficult for you to get them switched over at 10.00 or 11.00 pm, which is the local time at which we'd be likely to be kicking off.

The lucky shag is the sunderland supporters pub mate.

You can catch every game at the casino. They show every game on up to ten screens and also boast the biggest screen in the southern hemisphere!

We used to head down about ten, couple of hours playing cards then watch all the prem games. Trust me that screen and sound system is impressive!

Then walk home in the morning about 6am, hungry jacks for breakfast then to work in cottesloe for 8am if it was a sunday game .

Good times!

I also suggest watching perth glory games while your that way. A guy called blaine runs the supporters club who meet at the elephant in northbridge a few hours before every game. I can give you his facebook details if you like. The standard isn't great but its an amazing day! Football like it used to be. Stood on the terrace behind the goal singing away, beer in hand in the sun.

We are certainly not rare.

We did have an amazing "promotion" year party at the Orient which went for at least 12 hours, and in one case three days.

Two guys spent a night in a club on the way.

One guy who had been in Sydney for years and years turned up.

In total, we had over 25 for the event, which culminated with Sydney Rovers being ask to leave, so we decamped to the Mercantile.

Chris Roe must have a tale to tell, three days Chris! wtf where you?

Additionally, we've met up with visiting Rovers supporters at the Lord Nelson over the years, particularly when the England Cricket team have been here.

Well maybe we're not that rare then, 25 is a pretty good turn out... there's a few of us around I'm sure, there was one guy I knew at high school who was also a supporter. But relatively speaking there aren't a lot of down here, compared to 'big 4' supporters :rover:

If you'd been there last season, you could have re-acquainted yourself with 2 former Rovers who played for the Glory: Andy Todd; and, er, Robbie Fowler. :o

Neither's there this season; Glory's big signing for the coming season is Liam Miller, who used to play for Celtic, Man Untied & Sunderland.

Haha I know!

Todd was there towards the end of my time watching the glory and fowler played for north queensland in townsville when my job moved up there.

Strange that he just lost it so suddenly as he wasn't that old really. Did ok in the a league though

As it happens i texted my mate and he said exactly as you say, best place to catch every premier league game is the Burswood Casino. Also home to a decent golf course that we played out there!

As for Andy Todd and Robbie Fowler, they were sat a few rows behind us on one of the Ashes days at the WACA. We had a photo with Todd and a good chat with him. We ignored Robbie, and then one of our lot asked him to take the photo ha! He didnt respond!

And M1st, i assume your mate is from great harwood? i was walking to the cricket ground in my rovers shirt, walked past a pub, and got shouted over by a chap who turned out to be a rovers fan from great harwood. Shaven head, his mate also from harwood in a liverpool shirt. Probably not the same one but you never know.

Anyway Dan hope this info helps. I had a quality time in Perth, hope you do too

There's so many Brits in Sydney that there's gotta be a few at least. Might try and get something together for the first big game we have after I move down there.

  • 2 months later...

thanks for the information guys!!

got the foxtel in, $100 dollars a month but worth every penny. I havent missed a rovers game yet with all the 3pm kick offs being shown! no need to head to the pub either, I just usually stick the telly in the garden and watch it outside true ozzy style!

still not found any rovers fans out here yet but i'm sure there is a few in the more northern suburbs.

cheers again.
